A scientist set out to improve the productivity (生产力) of farm animals and along the way set off a (1) earthquake. The experiment he (2) pursued (从事) involved work with a cell from an adult mammal. His (3) were to make a cell behave like a cell from a developing embryo (胚胎). And it was successful. He and his coworkers cloned a sheep called Dolly and introduced her to a (4) world in February 1997. Perhaps it was his isolation in a quiet rural part of Scotland that permitted him to resist the (5). Or perhaps it was the isolation of the remote field of farm animals that gave him the (6). However, he seemed as surprised as anyone else that his (7) and simple experiment should have a great impact on our sense of what it is to be human. He wanted (8). Any experiment with humans, he believed, (9). It would be morally unacceptable, he said, to use his technique to create a human clone. Of course (10). In a word, Dolly the sheep has changed the world. If artists fail to recreate their image over and over againthey risk facing criticisms of dullness; that they are not fashionable. This phenomenon applies especially to the female ranks. It is not enough for an artist to be beautiful and sexy. These characteristics too must be changed often, and remodeled to avoid being bogged down by a stereotype. One example of the rock n roll art of move and change is Madonna, a brilliant illustration of the trend. Her latest disc (光盘), Something to Remember, showcases (陈列) her wonderful popular songs and how she has so effectively been able to stay at the top without diminishing (降低) credibility (信誉) in her particular field. (For these purposes, we will forget her unworthy play about sex and that horrible book.) This collection demonstrates how she has toned down her image at relevant (相关的) times to give contrast and definition to her career. But it offers more than simply a study in rock fashion history. There is also a solid assortment (混合物) of quality music. It opens with the newest I Want You with Massive Attack, a faintly sad and moody song which quickly moves back in time to her earlier songs: Crazy for You, This Used to Be My Playground and Youll See. There is also a nice version of Love Dont Live Here Anymore. So this is more than an exploitative (利用的) offering. 1.This article is primarily _.A. a review of Madonnas new recordB. a review of Madonnas life storyC. an analysis of Madonnas success in HollywoodD. a review of Madonnas career2.The main point of Paragraph 1 is to tell the reader that artists need to _.A. keep an image that the public knows and lovesB. recreate themselves to surviveC. avoid being dull at all costsD. stay sexy to survive3.How would you describe the writers attitude towards Madonna?A. Basically critical.B. Negative.C. Generally favourable.D. Uncritically admiring.4.In Paragraph 5 the main point _.A. is to suggest that the record is a waste of moneyB. is to describe some stories from Madonnas pastC. is to introduce Madonnas new recordD. is to detail the contents of the new record5.In paragraph 2, bogged down could be replaced by which of the following?A. Enhanced.B. Improved.C. Restricted.D. Bothered.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.Engineering students are supposed to be examples of technical skill and logic, but when it comes to my college education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But thats not what I did. I choose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts university that doesnt even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interaction with people who werent studying science or engineering. I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering factories where they didnt care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive scholar all in one. Now Im not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal-arts courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile (调和) engineering with liberal-arts courses in college. The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply dont mix as easily as I assumed in high school. Individually they shape a person in very different ways; together they threaten to confuse. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult. 6.The author chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts university because he _.A. wanted to be an example of technical skill and logicB. intended to be a combination of engineer and scholarC. wanted to coordinate engineering with liberal-arts courses in collegeD. intended to be a sensible student with noble ideas7.According to the author, by interacting with people who study liberal arts, engineering students can _.A. balance engineering and the liberal artsB. receive guidance in their careersC. become noble idealistsD. broaden their horizons8.In the eyes of the author, a successful engineering student is expected _.A. to have an excellent academic recordB. to be wise and matureC. to be creative with a value system to guide himD. to be a technical genius with a wide vision9.The authors experience shows that he was _.A. creativeB. ambitiousC. unrealisticD. irrational10.The word they in together they threaten to confuse. (Line 3, Para. 5) refers to _.A. engineering and the liberal artsB. reality and noble idealsC. flexibility and a value systemD. technical skill and logicQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. As a Canadian bilingual (双语的) teacher, I agree that the Canadian bilingual schools have been successful in producing functionally bilingual students. However, Mr. Whelptons suggested condition that teachers in these schools must be fully bilingual may be unnecessary. For example, primary teachers can and do function with a smaller vocabulary than secondary teachers. Secondly, it is doubtful that students will use English because they understand and accept the objective of making English the language of the classroom which is a rather sterile explanation. One reason that Canadian bilingual programs work is because of the commitment to Whole Language Learning, that is, children learn a language, (first or second), by using it to transmit (播送) or receive meaningful messages that are interesting, real and important. They want to make their needs and desires known and to understand the world around them. Bilingual programs integrate language and content in an activity-based, child-centered manner so that the child is motivated to use the second language as a tool to transmit and receive messages related to social and academic interests. Mr. Whelptons third argument that all the students in one class need to be at approximately the same level of English proficiency (熟练) when they switch to English is unrealistic and unprofitable. How does a teacher group children who have a huge vocabulary but poor grammar skills with others who have correct grammar but a poor vocabulary? Also, suppose the students have similar language abilities but different learning styles! Therefore the concept of Cooperative Learning: students with a mixture of personalities, talents and weaknesses (a more realistic reflection of life) learn better as they cooperate (合作), instead of compete, and depend on each other for support and information. 11.How would
