Passage One In the past, young married couples often had children right after getting married. They didnt ask themselves if they had the desire to stay up at night with babies, to give up going out at night whenever they wanted to. Now many young couples feel that not having children will allow them to have a freer, more enjoyable lifestyle.Michael Shandrik, 28, and his wife Pamela, 30, for example, have joined the growing number of young couples who dont have and do not want children. Many of their close friends are childless and plan to remain that way. Michael says the decision not to have children developed over four years of marriage. He explains “we never decided to become childless. It more or less became an understanding after we got married.” Pamela adds, “If I had married before 23, I probably would have had children. Its too late to change now.”For both of them, the desire for a free lifestyle played a big part in the decision. Michael, who wants to build a career in communications, makes the point. “We would buy the things we really want rather than go without things for the sake of the children. If we had a kid, we would have to start thinking about its education and health. We need the independence of getting somewhere whenever we want. I want to go ahead.”21. Flexible working hours, or “Flextime”, are catching on fast, and this trend is continuing. In 1973, over 500 organizations had adopted the idea; and by 1974, this number had risen to over 200,000.Flexible working hours were invented in Germany in the late 1960s, but reached Britain only in 1972. The system allows workers to start and finish work whenever they want, with only two requirements. These are, firstly, that all workers must present for certain “key” times in the day, and secondly, that all workers must work an agreed total number of hours per week. The system has proved a total success wherever it has been tried. A survey of 700 workers on flexible hours showed three main advantages: a better balance between working and private life, avoidance of the need to travel during rush hours and the ability to finish a certain task before leaving. From the employers point of view, the system tends to increase productivity, reduce labour turnover and give workers greater sense of duty. At first, “Flexible” was mainly confined to white collar workers, but it is now being applied to manual workers too.26. Flexible working hours were firstly used by the _.A)British B) Americans C) Germans D) Japanese27. According to “Flextime” system workers need not _.A) work at the same time B) work all the workdaysC) work hard D) ask for leave when being absent28. “Key” time is a period when _.A) visitors come to the plantsB) all workers must be at workC) employers go around in the workshopD) rush hours are over29. One of the great advantages of “Flextime” for workers is that they _. A) have a great sense of duty B) can avoid busy traffic C) can get higher pay D) can avoid working hard Passage Three In England recently three foreign gentlemen approached a bus stop. They studied the information on the sign attached to the concrete post and decided which bus to take. About five minutes later the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to board it. Suddenly there was a clamour behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted insulting remarks about foreigners. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of queuing for a bus so that the first person who arrived at a bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.Learning the language of a country isnt enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to Indian would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and assume that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a rotating movement of the head is a gesture that signifies agreement or acceptance. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to signify “yes”a nod indicates “no”. Arabs are known for their gracious hospitality. At a meal in countries on the Arabian Peninsula, you will find that any drinking vessel is repeatedly refilled as soon as you drain it. The way to indicate that you have had enough is to take the cup or glass in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence. It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adulthoodits just not done.31. Why did someone at the bus stop shout insulting remarks about the foreigners?A) They were rude and impolite to that person.B) They had tried to push that person out of the way.C) They had not waited in a queue to get on a bus.D) They did not know the language well enough.32. Which of the following is true?A) In Bulgaria, you are likely to be left thirsty if you nod when offered a drink.B) In India, nodding ones head is a sign of agreement or acceptance.C) Your Arabic host wont refill your drinking vessel if you dont insist.D) In countries on the Arabian Peninsula you must shake your head to signify “yes”.33. In Thailand, crossing ones legs _.A) is considered all right even at im
