But recently big changes have seen these traditional publications try to fit the modern world. After 221 years, The Times (泰晤士报) has changed its size to become much smaller. In fact, the paper has cut its size in half from a broadsheet to tabloid. In Britain the newspaper market is divided between the larger broadsheets and the smaller tabloids. These terms refer to the size of the papers pages, but there is also a clear difference in content. Broadsheets such as the Times, the Guardian (卫报) and Daily Telegraph (每日电讯报) are serious papers. They cover a broad range of political, economic and international issues. Their stories are also reasonably long and use quite formal language. Tabloids have far more stories about less serious issues such as celebrities(名人) love lives. Their stories are shorter and use more simple language. Tabloids often have bigger pictures. Britains best-selling newspaper, the Sun, is a tabloid and has a naked (裸体的) girl on page three every day.By changing to the size of a tabloid, the Times is following in the footsteps of a less famous broadsheet paper the Independent (独立报). It changed to tabloid last year and saw its sales increase greatly. Although both papers have switched to the smaller size, the content of the papers has remained the same. They are both still serious papers. The two papers claim that people find the smaller size easier to handle when they travel to work on the bus or the train in the morning. Instead of calling the new style of their paper tabloid, the paper says its new size is “compact” (紧凑型).41. In which year was The Times born?A. 1782 B. 1785 C. 1788 D. 178642. Which is the most correct statement?A. Broadsheets are larger in size while tabloids are smaller.B. Tabloids are less serious than broadsheets.C. Broadsheets contain more news than tabloids.D. The Times C. The Independent D. The Guardian44. According to the passage, we can infer the main reason for The Times changing into the tabloid is that_.A. it wants to become convenient for people to carry.B. it wants to increase its circulation (发行量).C. it intends to copy what The Independent has done.D. it is unlikely to stay in business if it does not change.45. All the papers will tend to have the same style in the future.BWhen I asked my daughter which item she would keep; the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said“the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology. Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about? Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,”says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance(救护车) to her rescue. Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at and time of day to ask where they are , where they are going, and how their last meeting went. Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so nearbut we didnt meet for the first two weeks!” Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously ( 同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldnt know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while theyre space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access(存取) the Internet, the biggest library on Earth. 46.How do you understandPoint 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate,? A. People dont communicate without telephone. B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone. C. People communicate more since telephone has been created. D. People communicate more because of more traffic. 47.Which of the following best shows peoples attitude towards mobile phones? A. Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency. B. Mobile phones bring convenience as well little secret to people. C. Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged. D. Mobile phones are part of peoples life. 48. Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve peoples life? a. Point 1. b. Point2. c. Point3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5. A. c, d B. a, e C. a, c D. b, e 49.It is possible to talk to several complete strangers simultaneously through . A. the TV screen B. a fax machine C. the phone line hooked up to the computer D. a microphone 50.The best heading for the passage is . A. phone Power B. Kinds of Phone C. how to Use Phones D. Advantage of Phones C Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity per hour worked is the same in the United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed. In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work less. In other words they have decided to “spend” a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But not in the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be greatly lower taxes in America, which increase the rewards to work. Another may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.Longer hours do of course increase the GDP (国内生产总值). So the United States has produced more per worker than, say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in France many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same.It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be compared with other values like family life, which often get lost in interest. It is too early to explain the different trends(趋势)in happiness over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life balance?51.From the text we know that the author .A. believes that longer working hours is betterB. prefers shorter working hours to longer onesC. says nothing certain about which pattern is betterD. thinks neither of the patterns is good52.Which of the following countries has more of its people at work? Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US.C. People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer.D. Americans are happier than Europeans.55.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Americans and Europeans B. Staying at HomeC. Work and Productivity D.
