I hope so. You see, actually Im getting married soon, and my friends want to buy me presents and things.W: And would you like some things for the kitchen?M: Yes, thats right. I thought if I could find out about kitchen things, they would be the best sorts of presents.W: Well, I suppose the first you need is a cooker. Do you want an electric one or a gas one?M: Hm. I think Id probably prefer a gas one. But cookers are very expensive, arent they? How much is this one?W: Its 175 pounds, including tax and delivery. Its a very good one though.M: But its a lot of money, isnt it? What sorts of things could I ask people to buy? You know, cheaper.W: Well, you need some pans, wont you? A set of saucepans, I suppose, and frying pans .Do you like cooking?M: Yes, I suppose so.W: Well, in that case, you might like a mixer. If you make cakes and things like that, itll save you a lot of time, and a blender too. Thats good if you make soup and things.M: Hm. Thats a thought.W: Something else you might use is a set of these knives, you know, carving knives, bread knives, steak knives, fruit knives, potato peeling knives.M: Heavens! I never knew there were so many sorts.W: Oh, yes. Come over here and Ill show you some more.Conversation 2 A New Job OfferM: Good morning, Mrs. Thomson.W: Oh, Mr. Minizuka. Please come in and sit down. I want to talk to you about something that has come up.M: Whats up? Anyway, Ill be glad to help you with anything I can.W: Some advice, Mr. Minizuka. I have been offered a new job.M: A new job?W: As a matter of fact, it isnt the bank in New York.M: Its the offer from another bank?W: Its from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Washington.M: You mean the World Bank?W: Thats right. And its really very unexpected, I must say.M: Youve established a reputation in international banking circles. May I ask what kind of position theyve offered you?W: A rather important one, as a matter of fact, deputy director of the International Finance Corporation.M: Isnt that the part of the bank that makes loans to private companies in the developing countries?W: Yes, it is. Its a job that certainly offers a chance for public service.M: It seems to me that its a real honor for you.W: Yes, it is. But Ive been with this bank for so many years. Ever since I graduated from college, in fact.M: But its an honor for the bank, too, for the training and experience its given you.W: Yes, I suppose I can think of it that way.M: Then, youve decided to accept the offer?W: Probably, yes, almost certainly. Id like to think I can do some work that will contribute to international cooperation and understanding.Conversation 3 Selecting CoursesA: OK. Now wed better make sure you enjoy your studies. We offer a wide range of options on the foundation course, but you can only take five courses. What have you selected?B: Physical sciences, basic electronics, art and design,CADA: Oh, right. CAD and English. Thats quite strange. Dont you want to do maths, or computer programming, for example? Why did you choose art and design?B: Well, Im interested in electronics and in writing computer games. Id like to produce educational software and educational games. Ive taught myself a lot of programming. So I dont think Id benefit much from a foundation level course.A: Oh, no, I see that. Go on, please.B: So, I want the basicsthe physical science and electronics. I was hopeless at physics in school and we didnt have electronics. But I was good at maths. I dont think I need that.A: Then what about the art and design?B: That will be good for my graphicsI need that to produce games, and CAD tooIve never done CAD before.A: Right. Theyve got some powerful packages in the computer graphics and CAD offices. Youll enjoy that. Then English. I know your English is very good, but why did you take it?B: In fact I dont have any problem in speaking, but my writing is terrible.A: Then I suggest you join the study skills class. Theyll have lectures on report writing and that may help you with how to structure your essays and so on.B: Right. That sounds good.Conversation 4 Applying for Practice in a CompanyA: Good morning, Mr. Johnson. Im Diana Huston.B: Good morning. What can I do for you?A: Im a college student. Im taking a business course which needs three weeks work experience. My lecturer, Mr. Armstrong, suggested I contact you as youve allowed students before to practice in your company. Ive brought a letter of reference from Mr. Armstrong for you.B: Thanks. Yes, our company has a good relationship with the university. Weve had many students here over the past years. We usually take students who are in the second half of their courses. What about you?A: Im almost at the halfway mark. Ive got some exams in two weeks. Then Ill be ready to start before the beginning of the second semester. But I thought Id get this organized before the exams start.B: Thats a very responsible way of thinking. Its a good idea to get in early. Im sure there will be many students soon.A: I could start in three weeks if you like.B: Do you understand whats involved in the practice?A: I think so. Mr. Armstrong explained the procedures to us. I have to work regular hours, and write a comprehensive report on what Ive learnt as an assignment for Mr. Armstrong and the personnel department of the company as well. And you will send a report about my work to Mr. Armstrong and that will also be part of my assessment.B: Thats right. But Ill have to discuss this application with the personnel department. And I will let you know as soon as possible if youve been accepted.A: Yes, please. If Im not accepted, Ill have to apply somewhere else.Conversation 5 Job Sharing W: So John, I hear you and Arthur share a job, dont you?M: Yeah. Weve shared a sales job at Sonatech for about two years now.W: Well, how do you divide up your schedule?M: You know we are both sales representatives, and we take orders over the phone. When we started job sharing it was difficult, because we both worked all day Monday. I worked Tuesday and Thursday and Arthur worked Wednesday and Friday. The problem was that when I was in the office on Tuesday. I would talk to people, then they would call back on Wednesday with a question. But Arthur couldnt answer the question and he couldnt ask me about it because I wasnt in
