with GGI Energy officials via Skype Wednesday about 40 city and county officials and local residents gathered to ask questions and voice concerns regarding the possible construction of a waste to energy plant east of Creston near Prairie Solid Waste Agency GGI Energy of Plano Texas claims they have researched developed and improved patented technology to transform southwest Iowa s everyday garbage into diesel fuel and electricity with minimal emissions GGI Energy officials are proposing a 40 ton per day waste to energy facility be built in Union County which they say would generate about 5 200 gallons per day of commercial grade diesel fuel Other Iowa cities currently in discussion with GGI Energy are Osceola Newton Spencer and Fort Dodge County officials said the Texas based company targeted Iowa cities For internal circulation only because of the exceptional incentives the state offers including subsidies and low and no interest loans GGI Energy plants currently located in Japan and South Korea have patented technology that use an onsite furnace to gasify waste at a high temperature and increase the energy content of the waste The waste is then refined and through a series of steps liquefied to produce commercial grade diesel fuel Bob Brown county supervisor chairman voiced a concern Wednesday with possible contamination to Creston water treatment plant Three Mile Lake and Twelve Mile Lake That s an excellent question because it s an important concern said Al Davis director of sales for GGI Energy However once we get our hands on the waste it s totally contained and at no time does the waste come into contact with soil So it can never leach down and we won t have any runoff into soil or into lake or stream nearby Several residents were concerned with the emissions but GGI Energy officials said they use a gasification process that s clean and leaves no emissions Davis said there are ash remnants inside the modules but is contained at all times GGI Energy officials also added waste to energy plants are not currently regulated by the DNR or EPA air quality standards For those concerned with odors GGI officials said the odor will be less than the current odor being emitted from the current transfer station because all waste coming in will be pretreated which eliminates the odor and processed within 12 hours Contract Currently the county is in the fifth year of a 10 year contract with Metro Waste Authority in Des Moines The county spends about 44 000 per month hauling trash from Prairie Solid Waste to Des Moines The county could save about 528 000 in hauling costs per year if a GGI Energy plant is built Amy Schultes manager at Prairie Solid Waste said Tuesday the county will not break their contract with Metro Waste Authority if the waste to energy plant is constructed as anything more than 40 tons of dry trash per day will need to be hauled to Des Moines Schultes said she found nothing in the contract with Metro Waste Authority identifying a minimum or maximum amount of required trash For internal circulation only Moving forward Don Reasoner county supervisor for Clarke County and chairman of the landfill commission said supervisors and commissioners are currently exploring all possibilities and are interested in working together with Creston in building a waste to energy plant but would like for it to be built in Osceola Davis said Tuesday there will only be one plant built in the area at either Creston or Osceola but not both and the two communities will need to collaborate on the project Davis said both are attractive locations as they both have active landfill and transfer station sites which expedites environmental permitting Davis said Creston is an attractive site because it collects the most trash about 65 tons of the 80 tons of gross trash per day required to run the waste to energy plant The Union County Landfill Commission Board will meet 4 45 p m Feb 15 at the Chamber of Commerce conference room to further discuss the waste to energy plant and possibly draft a letter of intent Meanwhile Clarke County Landfill Commission meets again March 8 Source from concerns a7c8lfp Cheshire West and Chester Council have awarded planning permission to waste to energy specialist Covanta Energy to build an Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate IBAA facility at Ince Park Cheshire The company said that the IBAA recycling facility will have the capacity to process up to 250 000 tonnes of Incinerator Bottom Ash IBA every year The ash will be supplied by Covanta s 95 MW waste to energy facility which has previously been given the go ahead at the Ince Park site According to Covanta the IBA to be treated is a by product of the incineration of residual waste and is a safe aggregate like material which once processed is commonly used in the construction industry Ince Park is a joint venture project between Covanta Energy and Peel Environmental to deliver to UK s largest Eco Park located in the North West of England on the south bank of the Manchester ship canal Covanta claimed that the concept behind the Ince Park development is to increase waste recycling reprocessing and energy recovery and to create a centre for excellence for the emerging resource economy For internal circulation only Malcolm Chilton UK managing director of Covanta Energy commented This ensures the IBA will be recycled and not sent to landfill Furthermore as the IBAA facility will be located within Ince Park alongside our EfW facility transportation will be kept to a minimum helping to provide an even more sustainable solution Covanta said that its preferred partner for the facility is Ballast Phoenix which currently operates on seven UK sites and processes more than 650 000 tonnes of IBA per year David York Managing Director of Ballast Phoenix added The IBA produced from the EfW facility can be managed in the most sustainable way providing a source of alternative aggregate for construction and infrastructure developers in the North West Source from http www waste management display 0585306596 articles waste management world waste to energy 2012 02 Incinerator supply and build a 35 MWe biomass fired circulating fluidised bed CFB boiler island that will be part fuelled by demolition waste According to the company under the contract awarded by Lunds Energi a publically owned energy supplier southern Sweden it will design and supply the steam generator and auxiliary equipment as well as carry out the erection and commissioning of the boiler island The company said that the steam generator will be designed to burn 100 bio fuel with up to 50 demolition wood Lunds Energi is building the new combined heat and power plant to replace existing old equipment operating on fossil fuels According to Tomas Harju Jeanty president and chief executive officer of Foster Wheeler Energia Oy Group the fuel flexibility of the company s CFB technology is a good solution for biomass power generation because it can utilise a wide range of renewable and waste fuels Our CFBs can divert waste headed for landfills and instead convert this waste into valuable steam and electricity he said For internal circulation only The terms of the agreement were not disclosed and the contract value will be included in the company s first quarter 2012 bookings Commercial operation of the new steam generator is scheduled for the second quarter of 2014 Foster Wheeler said that it has received a full notice to proceed on this contract with commercial operation making news through its various cleaner fuel developments and initiatives that the ocean carrier says will just not lower its carbon footprint but could eventually lead to savings on its annual fuel bill One of the more notable developments the Danish shipping line has been working on is its recently concluded one month long 6 500 nautical mile test voyage of the 984 foot Maersk Kalmar that the company said burned 30 tons of biofuel Maersk s test run of the renewable algal algae biofuel supplied by the company Solazyme Inc was conducted in cooperation with the U S Navy which is also developing its own green fleet initiative that includes the goal of having 50 percent alternative energy usage by 2020 Maersk Line is committed to exploring the potential of biofuel for becoming a fuel for shipping in the future We are pleased to see progress on algae based biofuels and we encourage further development to make such fuels available at commercial scale said Jacob Sterling head of climate and environment for Maersk Line Maersk has also entered into low sulfur usage agreements at seaports around the U S and the world including at ports in California Pacific Northwest Texas Virginia Sweden and Singapore When calling those ports Maersk says it switches to low sulfur fuel while at berth in order to reduce emissions For internal circulation only Maersk also announced it was testing an exhaust scrubbing system its 8 100 TEU Maersk Taurus which operates the shipping line s Asia Europe service The system s aim is to see if it can clean out the dirty bunker fuel to the point of not needing to utilize the more costly low sulfur fuel Maersk has also reportedly said the development of such renewable biofuels could eventually lead to a savings off the 6 billion a year the company spends on fuel for its ships However for now Maersk Line s Jacob Sterling admits biofuels are costly and relatively un developed Biofuel made from algae is one of the less developed biofuels and with further
