And they stay in the closet or garage before the y get put away.M: I know, I know. Thats the problem. Thats why I hate buying gifts for somebody because it can never be perfect. So, I am heading over to the clothing store right now.W: Perhaps you are trying too hard to get something very impressive or decorative. I always think a gift should be practical. Why dont you think of something he might like or something that he will most likely get soon?M: Oh, I know. His backpack is almost wrecked. Maybe I should get him a backpack instead.W: Here you go. It sounds like a perfect gift.M: Gosh, now I am wondering which color I should pick. He is really particular about the color.W: Thats not difficult. What was the color of the last one he chose? (C)Part Two PassagesPassage One A Missing Dog One sunny morning in summer, I left my sisters house and went for a walk along a hilly path. It was a war, day and there was no one on the path. At the end of the path, I was sitting down to rest when a big black dog suddenly appeared. It ran up to me barking and lay down at my feet. I touched its head. When I started to walk home, it followed me and it would not go away. It had a collar around its neck, but there was no name on the collar. When I got home, I rang up the nearest police station. I told the police that I had found a big black dog. I said that I would keep it until its owner called for it. I gave the police my name and address. Two days later, an old gentleman came to my house to ask about the dog. He said he had lost his dog because it hated riding in cars. One day, it jumped out of the open window of his car. He offered me ten dollars. But I did not take the money. Then he gave me his name and address and invited me to visit him.Question 1 to 3 are based on the passage you have just heard.1. Where did the speaker find the dog? (A)2. What does the passage tell us about the dog? (D)3. How didi the owner probably find his dog? (A)Passage Two Dog Training Americans own about seventy-three million dogs. Many people have problems training their animals. Some are turning to dog expert Cesar Millan. Cesar Millan says dog owners must be the leader, or the dog will become confused and act in anti-social ways. The animal might become uncontrollable. It may bark all the time or even bite someone. The best way to train a dog is to prevent this behavior in the first place. He says the owner must be able to keep the dog happy and calm. Recently, he visited a home where the dog barked loudly when people used some cooking equipment. The dog was afraid of the noise, and its loud barking was interfering with the lives of its owners. Cesar Millan placed the dog in a small space. Then he operated the equipment very close to the animal until the dog stopped barking. The owners said the dog stopped being afraid of the noise after that. However, not all dog experts agree with all of Millans methods, they say it is true that dogs need good leadership and a lot of exercise. But they say it can be cruel and dangerous to force a dog to face its fears as in the example we described. They say the animal might attack. Cesar Millan said that his methods are not the only ways to train dogs successfully. He also said that people should seek professional help when trying to change their pets behavior. And his television show repeatedly tells people not to try the methods without professional help.Question 1 to 4 are based on the passage you have just heard.1. According to what Cesar Millan says how to make a dog under control? (A)2. In the example, what is Millans method to stop the dog from barking? (B)3. What is other dog experts concern as to Millans methods? (B)4. What warning does Cesar Millan give about dog training? (C)Part Three Compound Dictation Dr Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humor. (1) Participants are invited to log on the laugh lab (2) website, give a few personal details, tell their favorite jokes and (3) judge the jokes told by other people. The project will last for a year, and the (4) organizers hope to finally discover the worlds (5) funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose. The (6) researchers want to know what people from different nations and (7)cultures find amusing. And they want to find out the (8) differences between the male and female sense of humor. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh. “ Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humor.” Said Dr Wiseman. “ Males use humor to appear superior to others, (9)while women are more skilled in languages and prefer word play.” Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humor. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humor”. (10)But the French like their jokes short and sharp. “Youre a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. Whats the second question?” Dr Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But (11)none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny thing to us.Part Four Story Appreciation The shoemaker and the Banker A shoemaker passed his time in singing from morning till night; it was wonderful to see, wonderful to hear. Life from making shoes is a real pleasure. On the contrary, his neighbor, who was a banker, didnt live a happy life and had difficulty falling sleep. When by chance he fell into a doze at day-break, the shoemaker awoke him with his song. The banker complained sadly that the God had not made sleep a commodity that can be bought like food and drink. Having sent for the singer, he said to him, “How much a year do you earn? Mr. Gregory?” just living as I do from one day to another; somehow I manage to reach the end of the year; each day brings its meal.” “How much a year, sir?” said the merry shoemaker laughing. “I have never figured it out, just living as I do from one day to another; somehow I manage to reach the end of the year; each day brings its meal.” “Well then! How much a day do you earn, my friend?” “Sometimes more, sometimes less; but the worst of it is, a number of days occur in the year on which we are forbidden to work.” The banker, laughing at his simplicity, said, “I will make you rich very soon. Take these hundred pounds, keep them carefully and make use of them in time of need.” The shoemaker imagined he possessed all the wealth, which the earth had produced in the past century for the use of mankind. Returning home, he buried his money and his happiness at the same time, no more singing; he lost his voice the moment he acquired the money, which is the source of so muc
