It seemed to those seeking to solve the longitude problem that the only solution was in the moon and stars. During the 17th century, English astronomers began a major effort to map the stars and their relationship to the moon as it passed across the sky. Royal Astronomer John Flamsteed worked at this task for forty years. The next Royal Astronomer, Edmund Halley, spent another forty years gathering information about the moons orbit. In 1766, Royal Astronomer Nevil Maskelyne published the Nautical Almanac (航海天文年历) and Astronomical Ephemeris (星历表). It contained all the necessary information about the moon and stars that sailors would need to help them learn their longitude. A navigator had to use complex observing instruments to note the position of the moon and stars. Then he had to seek the correct information in the Nautical Almanac about the moon and stars at that time of night or day. The final step in the process was to take the mathematical information from the book, link it to the current information and solve the resulting problem. This took an average of four hours to do.While scientists were studying the stars and moon to solve the longitude problem, a man named John Harrison was working on another project. He was trying to build a clock that would help sailors learn longitude. He began developing his clock in 1730. It took five years to complete. Several years later, he built a second clock. Twenty years later, he completed a device that was smaller than the first two. But still he was not satisfied. Two years later, he produced a small clock that he could hold in his hand. The clock could tell the correct time in two places, meeting the requirements for learning longitude on the sea.For many years after Mr. Harrisons work was completed, the idea of using a clock to learn longitude was rejected. However, that opinion changed when manufacturers learned how to make better and less costly versions of Mr. Harrisons clocks. The clocks became known as chronometers(航行表).31. In which year did Mr. Harrison produce his fourth clock for sailors to tell their longitude? A. In 1730.B. In 1735.C. In 1755.D. In 1757.32. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph refer to? A. The idea that sailors needed to use a clock to judge their longitude. B. The idea that sailors did not want to use a clock to determine their longitude. C. The idea that Mr. Harrison had invented the clock for sailors to tell their longitude. D. The idea that Mr. Harrison had taken advantage of earlier scientists findings about longitude.33. From the second paragraph we can infer _. A. astronomers spent 80 years to collect the necessary information to publish the books about longitude. B. scientists believed they had to learn the positions of the moon and stars first to solve the longitude problemC. The new method for sailors to learn their longitude by observing the stars and the moon was not simple.D. After many years of hard work, it seemed not possible to learn longitude by observing the stars and the moon.34. Which of the following can be used to describe the history of solving the longitude problem? A. Nothing is impossible. B. Where there is life there is hope. C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Imagination will take you everywhere.BMany British people of my generation probably remember watching their first flea(跳蚤) circus on Michael Bentines Potty Time. Potty Time was a childrens TV program which featured comedian Michael Bentine and a group of puppets(木偶). Even as a child I never once thought that the flea circus which was featured on his show involved real fleas, so imagine my surprise when I read an article in a British newspaper about a group of performing fleas being denied entry to the UK by customs officers. The fleas and their boss, Professor Maria Fernanda Cordoso, had been on their way to perform at the Edinburgh Festival, one of Scotlands most famous arts festivals, when customs officials decided that the Australian fleas in her troupe(剧团) were illegal immigrants and would have to be sent back. The trainer then had to find other local fleas and train them to perform the same act.On reading the article I decided to investigate more and discovered that flea circuses have a long history originating in England in the 16th century. They had something of a golden age in the 1830s when L. Bertolotto set up his flea exhibitions in London. His exhibitions featured a flea orchestra playing flea music, fleas playing card games and so on. Dead fleas dressed as wedding couples were popular collectors items in the 1920s. And as late as the mid-1950s there was still a flea circus near Times Square in New York.Training fleas can be very difficult, but there are a few methods that have proven successful. For example, there are chemicals that fleas dont like. These can be put on a small ball and put among a group of fleas. The fleas will push the ball away with their legs and give the illusion that they are playing football. The trainer Cordoso is a sculptor and she spent four years researching the lost art of flea training and is now regarded as a world expert.35. Which is true about Professor Maria Fernanda Cordoso? A. She was unable to perform because her fleas were sent back to Australia. B. It was she that made the art of flea training known again. C. It was she who brought flea circuses to America. D. She comes from a family of flea trainers.36. When were flea circuses the most popular?A. In the 16th century.B. In the 1830s.C. In the 1920s.D. In the mid-1950s.37. How did the writer get to know the flea circus used live fleas to perform? A. By watching Michael Bentines Potty Time.B. By investigating the history of the flea circus.C. By reading an article about a group of performing fleas.D. By researching the flea sculptures made by Professor Cordoso.38. What does the underlined word “illusion” most probably mean in the text?A. interesting instruction.B. attractive impression.C. quick suggestion.D. false information.CUncle Toms Cabin, or Life among the Lowly is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel had a significant effect on worldwide attitudes toward African-Americans and slavery. In the United States, it is widely thought to have helped deepen the sectional(局部) conflict that led to civil war.Stowe, a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Academy and an active abolitionist(废奴主义者), focused the novel on the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering Black slave around whose life revolved(转动) the stories of other charactersboth fellow slaves and slave owners.Uncle Toms Cabin was the best-selling novel, and the second best-selling book following the Bible, of the 19th century and is credited with helping to fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In the first year after it was published, 300,000 copies of the book were sold in the United States alone. The books influence was so great that when Abraham Lincoln met Stowe at the start of the American Civil War, Lincoln is often quoted(引用) as having declared, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.”The book also helped create a number of common stereotypes about Blacks, many of which are still popular this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mother; the stereotype of black children and so on.The book opened with a Kentucky farmer named Arthur Shelby facing the loss of his farm because of debts. Even though he and his wife (Emily Shelby) believed that they had a good relationship with their slaves, Shelby decided to raise the needed funds by selling two of them-Uncle Tom, a middle-aged man with a wife and children, and Harry, the son of Emily Shelbys maid Eliza-to a slave trader. 39. At least four deaths have been blamed on what Chinese media calls the “smoggy weather” - including two high school students who were hit by a train due to low visibility. The smog has affected more than 30 cities in China. The air quality is so bad - some foreigners in China have been referring to it on social media as the “Airpocalypse(空气末日)” - that government media have been joining Internet users in questioning Chinas rapid path to economic growth.
