Childrens LiteratureHAMPTON UNIVERSITY: HARVEY LIBRARY Harvey Library maintains a small, yet growing collection of fiction and non-fiction materials for children and young adults, as well as reference materials concerning the selection, criticism, use, and history of childrens literature. The collection consists primarily of reference materials such as bibliographies and reviewing sources to aid in the selection and evaluation of childrens literature. The following resources are located either in the Reference Collection (Ref) on the first floor or in the Main Collection (Stx) on the fourth floor, unless otherwise indicated. These materials should help you to identify and evaluate desired childrens books, as well as to conduct biographical research on authors of childrens literature.As resources are located throughout the library, the location of specific items is indicated by the notation preceding its call number. The following chart outlines the location codes for items in Harvey Library and Hampton Universitys satellite libraries. The award is presented to the illustrator or artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published during the previous year. Additional information about the medal can be found at the Caldecott Medal Web site at . Runners up, recognized as Caldecott Honor Books, are also awarded annually. A comprehensive list of Caldecott Medal and Honor Books is located at . Please consult the separate handout entitled Caldecott Medal Winners for a list of the winners of this award since its inception in 1938. AWARDS: CORETTA SCOTT KING AWARD WINNERS: 1970-CurrentThe Coretta Scott King Medal, commemorating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and honoring his widow, Coretta Scott King, for her continuing work for peace and world brotherhood, is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the American Library Associations Social Responsibilities Round Table. Each year, one author and one illustrator receive the award. Recipients are persons of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the American Dream. Additional information about the medal can be found at the Coretta Scott King Medal Web site at . Runners up, recognized as Coretta Scott King Honor Books, are also awarded annually. In addition, the CSK Award Jury also chooses the Coretta Scott King New Talent Award winners to recognize emerging talent in the field. Please consult the separate handout entitled Coretta Scott King Award Winners for a list of the winners of this award since its inception in 1970.AWARDS: NEWBERY MEDAL WINNERS: 1922-CurrentInstituted in 1922 as the first childrens book award in the world, the Newbery Medal, named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery, is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. The award is presented to the author of the most distinguished American childrens book published during the previous year. Additional information about the medal can be found at the Newbery Medal Web site at . Runners up, recognized as Newbery Honor Books, are also awarded annually. A comprehensive list of Newbery Medal and Honor Books is located at . The purpose of the Newbery Medal remains as follows: To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve childrens reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field.
