A Review of Robinson CrusoeThis is a novel by the English author Daniel Defoe . It is one of the most popular adventurous novels in all literature . It is the story about Robinson Crusoe , an Englishman who was trapped in a lonely tropical island . He built himself a hut , grew his own food , and became self-sufficient . After 23 years he met with a group of cannibals and rescued one of their prisoners , a young native whom he called Friday . Crusoe and his “man” Friday became close friends , and then they were finally rescued four years later , both returned to England .The first time I finished reading this book was in my senior school . And now it is the second time , after I read this novel , I was deeply impressed by the characters : Robinson and Friday . First lets come to Robinson , a man who had a great ambition . Robinson Crusoe hated the comfortable life in his hometown .So, he went to be a sailor , went around the world . But on his once journey, a terrible thing happened A great storm came! No one was alive in this shipwreck but except Robinson! Yes, except Robinson . You can say he is the luckiest man in the world Because all his friends were dead but only he was alive . However , you also have to say he is the most tragic man of all He must face the cruel fact . Alone in an island without food, water and gun! But, all roads lead to Rome! He wasnt defeated by the difficulties ,on the contrary , he just worked, used his hands to work wonders! Then, he made a cave, built a hut , grew corn and kept goats . In the end, he could enjoy the life in the island. In his twenty-fourth year on the island , he saved a native man , and gave him the name of “Friday” . With Robinsons taught, “ Friday ” became a good servant . In once casual opportunity, they got a boat and escaped the island However, Robinson revisited “His Island” without taking his familys feelings into consideration. Even though it seemed almost emotionally cruel of Robinson to show indifference to his family, I ,to some extent , still admire him , just because he insist his ambition , we can also call it dream . Moreover, faced to difficulties ,he didnt give up ,he just tried his best to solve these problems step by step with his powerful confidence. The other reason why he can survive in the deserted island is that he had the skills which could made him alive even lived better.“A good book can save a man” .Now I completely believe this sentence. This book shows us Robinsons self-confidence , self-respect , self-reliance , insatiability and “never say give up”. So it is important for us youths to learn the spirits Robinson had, for this kind of spirit can make us more confident and help us overcome some difficulties we meet till we reach the goal we want. Then its Friday , a loyal servant who had a warm emotion to all people around him .Friday is a key figure within the context of the novel . In many ways he is the most vibrant character in Robinson Crusoe , much more charismatic and colorful than his master . Indeed , Defoe at times underlines the contrast between Robinsons and Fridays personalities , as when Friday , in his joyful reunion with his father , exhibited far more emotion toward his family than Robinson . Whereas Robinson never mentioned missing his family or dreamt about the happiness of seeing them again , Friday jumped and sang for joy when he met his father , and this emotional display makes us see what is missing from Robinsons heart . Fridays expression of loyalty in asking Robinson to kill him rather than leave him is more loyal than anything Robinson ever says or does . Fridays sincere questions to Robinson about the devil , which Robinson answered only indirectly and hesitantly , leave us wondering whether Robinsons knowledge of Christianity is superficial and not complete in contrast to Fridays full understanding of his own god Benamuckee . In short , Fridays energetic and emotional directness often point out the wooden conventionality of Robinsons personality Despite Fridays conquest , however, Robinson appreciated Friday much more than he would a mere servant . Robinson didnt not seem to value close with humans much, but he did say that he loved Friday , which is a remarkable discovery . It is the only time Robinson made such an admission in the novel , since he never expressed love for his parents , brothers , sisters , or even his wife . The only fact that an Englishman admitted more love for an uneducated Caribbean ex- ogre than for his own family suggested the appeal of Fridays personality . Robinson may brought Friday Christianity and clothing , but Friday brought Robinson emotional warmth and a vitality of spirit that Robinsons own European heart lacked .
