And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week when he was 23 years old. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momands series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.51. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they _.A. want to be as rich as their neighborsB. want others to know or to think that they are richC. dont want others to know they are richD. want to be happy52. It can be inferred (推断) from the story that rich people in the USA like to _.A. live outside New York City B. live in New York cityC. live in apartments D. have many neighbors53. In the opinion of the writer, it is _ to keep up with the Joneses. A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. good BIt was on the afternoon of the day of Christmas Eve, and I was in Mrs. Protheros garden, waiting for cats, with her son Jim. It was snowing. Patient and cold, our hands wrapped in socks, we waited to snowball the cats. The wise cats never appeared. We were so still in the snows that we never heard Mrs. Protheros first cry from the bottom of the garden. Or, if we heard it at all, it was, to us, like the cry of the neighbors Polar cat. But soon the voice grew louder. “Fire!” cried Mrs. Prothero. And we ran down the garden, with the snowballs in our arms, towards the house; and smoke, indeed, was pouring out of the dining room. This was better than all the cats in Wales standing on the wall in a row. We, loaded with snowballs, stopped at the open door of the smoke-filled room. Something was burning all right; perhaps it was Mr. Prothero, who always slept there after midday dinner with a newspaper over his face, but he was standing in the middle of the room, saying, “A fine Christmas!”There was no fire to be seen, only clouds of smoke and Mr. Prothero standing in the middle of them, waving his slipper as if he were conducting (指挥).“Do something,” he said. And we throw all our snowballs into the smokeI think we missed Mr. Portheroand ran out of the house.“Lets call the police,” Jim said.“And Ernie Jenkins, he likes fires.” But we only called the fire-brigade(消防队), and soon the fire-engine came. Mr. Porthero went out just in time before they turned the hose(水管)on.54. Why were the boys in Mrs. Protheros garden?A. They were about to start a snowball fight.B. They were waiting to see if there were any fires this year. C. They were waiting to hear Mrs. Portheros first cry.D. They were waiting for the neighbours cats to appear.55. When the boys saw smoke pouring out of the dining room, _.A. they were joyful and excited B. they were frightened and worriedC. they were sorry for Mrs. Prothero D. they were anxious about Mr. Prothero56. Mr. Prothero was suddenly missing in the smoky room.C. The boys always remembered Mr. Prothero.D. Their snowballs did not hit Mr. Prothero.CThey may be small and not able to speak, but babies are proving their amazing cleverness. Scientists began finding babies skills are more than they are supposed to be._ Speaking of music, babies cant seem to refuse it. Not only are their ears turned to the beats, babies can actually dance to the music. To test babies dancing ability, the researchers played recordings of classical music, rhythmic beats(节拍) and speech to babies, and recorded the results. They also invited professional dancers to analyse how well the babies matched their movements to the music. The babies moved their arms, hands, legs feet and heads in response to the music, much more than to the speech. The finding suggests this dancing ability is native in humans, though the researchers arent sure why it becomes weaker later in their life.Learning quickly while sleeping Babies can learn even while asleep, according to a 2011 study. In experiments with 26 sleeping babies, each just 1 to 2 days old, scientists played a musical tone followed by a puff of air to their eyes 200 times over the course of a half-hour. 124 electrodes(电极) stuck on the head and face of each baby recorded brain activity during the experiments. The babies quickly learned to foretell a puff of air upon hearing the tone, showing a four-time increase on average in the chances of tightening their eyelids in response (反应) to the sound by the end of the experiments. As newborns spend most of their time asleep, this newfound ability might be very important to quickly adapting to the world around them and help to ensure their survival, researchers said.Judging characters wellJudging another person helpful or harmful is very important when choosing friends. And that ability starts early. Kiley Hamlin of Yale University showed both 6-and 10-month-olds a puppet(木偶) show, in which one character helped another climb a hill. In another scene a third character pushed the climber down. The little ones then got to choose which character they preferred. For both age groups, most babies chose the helper character. This character-judging ability could be babys first step in the formation of morals, Hamlin thought.57. Which of the following subtitles(副标题) can be filled in the underlined blank?A. dancing to music B. babies amazing abilitiesC. learning to dance quickly D. born to dance58. The underlined word “it” in the third paragraph refers to _.A. the finding B. the dancing ability C. the response D. the baby59.
