Part two text 1When we talk about technology, we usually think small. However, were going to look at one of the biggest technological marvels of the 21st century. The Airbus A380 is the worlds biggest commercial aircraft. New technologies were used in the design, engineering and manufacture of this amazing superjumbo. The Airbus A380 is assembled in Toulouse in France, but parts of the aircraft are built in several European countries. They are brought to Toulouse by various means of transport. This is a ship which was built in China especially to transport the huge sections of the plane. Parts of the main body are built in Germany. Special carbon fibre materials are used to give the plane great strength with less weight than usual. The wings are made in Britain of the same carbon fibre material. They are much lighter than aluminum and steel. Several parts of the plane are built in factories in Spain. Finally, some sections are built in France, so Airbus has its own factories in Britain, France, Germany and Spain. One of the most important pieces of technology for such a huge aircraft is the landing gear. This is built in Canada where extensive tests are carried out to ensure that it can land under any conditions. The engines were developed by Rolls-Royce at Derby in Britain. Finally, pilots have to learn to fly the plane. This flight simulator at Toulouse uses the latest digital technology. Now for the moment of truth, with 154 planes ordered by the worlds airlines, the big question was: Will it fly at all? On the day of the first flight, thousands of people gathered at Toulouse Airport to see the superjumbo fly for the first time. They were not disappointed. The biggest airliner in the history of aviation took to the air as planned.Part three nanoThe Secret of Nano TechnologyANCHOR Britain says it plans to invest more in whats known as nano technology. The term may soundunfamiliar but its already a part of daily life for many. As Lawrence McGinty now explains, the promise of nano technology is almost unlimited.CORRESPONDENT If you think nano technology is all in the future, think again. These, for example, are nanotrousers; theyre already on sale in the United States. They feel like ordinary cotton trousers but theres a thin nano layer, which resists spills and stains. So, if you spill your drink, this is what happens, it just runs off. The trousers arent even damp.Nano trousers are just one application of the technology. This is a nano factory producing almost any material you want as very fine nano powders.PAUL REIP, QINETIQ NANOMATERIALS There are 50,000 particles in this vial for every person on the planet, thats all 6.9 billion people.CORRESPONDENT There are 350,000 billion particles in this tube.So nano technology is the science of the very small. But how small is small? Well imagine I was shrunk to a 1,000 times smaller. Id be about as big as the eye of a fly, but nano is even smaller than that. In fact, much, much smaller. Imagine I was shrunk again, this time 10,000 times. Id be about as big as a virus, but nano is even smaller than that. Youd have to shrink me another 100 times to get the nano version of me, a billion times smaller than the real me.Industry is already building devices on that scale. Here in Cambridge theyre making very thin nano layers of a plastic that emits light when electrical current runs through it. The technology will soon be on the market, in mobile phones with very bright, energy-saving displays.KARL HEEKS, CDT LIMITED People will see these initially in fairly simple products like mobile phones but ultimately they will be in TVs, and when the technology moves on to plastic, youll have the roll -down TV that you can put on your wall.CORRESPONDENT But its not just gadgets. This is a new wound dressing. Its made from silicon, which is normally brittle, but this is flexible.Magnified thousands of times you can see why: the silicon is full of holes. As this nano-silicon dissolves in the body, it would release drugs to combat diseases.PROFESSOR ROGER ASTON, SCIMEDIA Ultimately what will come is a chip that can go into the body, which will release its drugs or a whole variety of drugs.CORRESPONDENT The promise of nano technology is almost unlimited. Thats why the government is backing it and t
