Welcome Page 1 Welcome to the Texas Tech University Beef Cattle Diet Formulation Program This program requires Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Windows Operating Systems All dietary ingredient composition values used in this software were taken from the NRC 1996 Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle 7th Ed NRC Press Washington DC Click the option you want to use For information about items Page 2 About Page 3 General Information About the TTU Diet Formulation Program Computer and Software Requirements The TTU Diet Formulation Program is a Microsoft MS Excel program designed for use with MS Windows operating systems The program must be run from the MS Excel platform The program has not been extensively tested on different computer configurations if problems arise in running the program contact M L Galyean by telephone at 806 742 2453 or e mail at michael galyean ttu edu Loading the Software Because the program is an MS Excel the user can simply open MS Excel and use the File Open command to access and load the program Alternatively users of MS Windows can create a shortcut to the program that would reside on the desktop It is recommended that users create a separate directory on their hard drive in which the program resides Components of the Software The software is divided into two major parts a welcome or introduction screen and a diet formulation module Because the software is based on MS Excel users familiar with Excel spreadsheets should find navigation through the program fairly easy to accomplish however for those users less familiar with Excel macro buttons have been included to assist with navigation In essence the program consists of multiple sheets in an Excel workbook Several of these sheets are hidden e g calculation sheets dialog boxes and Visual Basic modules To view these hidden sheets the user can click on Format Sheets and unhide any or all sheets Sheet tabs can be shown by clicking Sheet Tabs in the Tools Options View menu It is recommend that the original file be stored on disk as a backup in case the program is corrupted in some way IMPORTANT USER NOTE Throughout the program cells that contain formulas are highlighted in blue CELLS THAT ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN BLUE ARE PROTECTED AND CANNOT BE MODIFIED BY THE USER Welcome Screen The Welcome Screen which loads at startup provides access to the major components of the software and access to this general information screen The user may select the choice of English or metric units for input and output via a drop down list and a Diet formulation button or Go to Archived Diets button Help information designated by a button is available throughout the software Diet Formulation Module When the Diet Formulation button is clicked on the Welcome Screen the user is taken to a simple diet formulation program This program allows trial and error diet formulation Further information on the Diet Formulation module is available by clicking the Info on diet formulation button on the Diet Formulation module screen Scroll down with arrow keys to read this document Use Control Home to return to top Saving and Loading Files This operation would be the same as for any Excel spreadsheet To open the file simply use the File Open command To save a file use the File SaveAs command Be sure to use a file name that differs from that of the base program if you want to save Row 53 Maximum of 40 feeds DCAD Na K Cl S Dietinfo Page 6 About the Diet Formulation Spreadsheet General This spreadsheet allows trial and error diet formulation The user must use feeds in the Feed Library and input feed numbers as they appear in the Library A list box is available that will indicate the feed number associated with all the feeds in the Library The user should pick out the desired feed numbers and enter these numbers in the input cells provided Once a feed number is entered the feed name will appear in the cell to the left of the feed number After feed numbers are entered the user should enter the percentage of each ingredient on a DM basis A DM Total box is available that shows the total of the percentages entered The user should verify that the total sums to 100 when all entries are complete The as fed composition is shown in the column to the right of the percentages on a DM basis Once all feed numbers and percentages of DM for each feed are entered and the total sums to 100 the user can view a summary of the nutrient concentration of the diet as formulated The feed library is derived from the NRC 1996 software feed library Up to 497 feeds can be included in the Feed Library Values based on actual feed ingredient analyses can be entered but it is suggested that these be entered as new feeds in the Blank rows Scroll down with arrow keys to read this document Use Control Home to return to top Archiving Diets and Retrieving Archived Diets The program allows up to 50 diet formulations to be archived for future use Once a diet formulation is completed the user can archive the diet simply by clicking on the Archive Current Diet button located above the ingredient list This action will cause a dialog box to appear on the screen that requests the user to input a name for the diet to be archived When the name is entered and the OK button is clicked on the dialog box the feed numbers and DM based percents for each feed number will be stored on a separate sheet When the sum of ingredients on a DM basis is not equal to 100 a message box will appear to prompt the user to reformulate the diet The user can access archived diets from the Welcome Screen or from the Diet Formulation screen by clicking the Go to Archived Diets button This will take the user to a sheet that contains a list box that shows the names of all archived diets When a diet name is highlighted a diet number is shown in a cell located beneath the list box The user then clicks the Retrieve Archived Diet and Paste to Diet Formulation button which will cause the program to copy and paste the appropriate data into the Diet Formulation sheet When archived diets are pasted into the Diet Formulation the name of the last archived diet that has been retrieved is shown in a list box located on the right hand side of the Diet Formulation screen Data stored in the archives can be viewed and edited by the user by clicking the Go to Archived Diet Data button located on the Archived Diet Selection screen When the user attempts to store a file name that already exists a message box will appear that allows the user to overwrite the existing data or to cancel and exit Similarly when the user attempts to store more than 50 files in the archives a message box will appear to alert the user At the point that 50 files are already stored in the archives the user should go to the archived data sheet and manually delete file names and associated data The archive number column is protected and should not be deleted Once these data are deleted the user should save the spreadsheet under a new file name Printing Diet Formulations When the user clicks the Print this Diet button an input box will appear to allow assignment of a name as the print header for the printed output If an archived diet is being printed it is up to the user to ensure that the name on the print header matches with the archived diet name As with diet acrchival when the sum of ingredients on a DM basis is not equal to 100 a message box will appear to prompt the user to reformulate the diet Dietinfo Page 7 Printing Diet Formulations When the user clicks the Print this Diet
