There are about a million quakes a year. Fortunately, however, not all of them are destructive. The intensity (强度) of an earthquake is measured on the Richter Scale, which goes from zero upward. The highest magnitude recorded to date is 8.9Major damage generally occurs from quakes ranging upwards from 6.0. The actual cause of earthquake itself is the breaking of rocks at or below the breaking of rocks at or below the earths surface. This is produced by pressure which scientists believe may be due to a number of reasons, two of which are the changed of the earths crust (外壳) and continental drift(漂流). In order to minimize the damage and to decrease some of the pain resulting from earthquakes, scientists are working on ways to improve accurate prediction. Two kinds of the instruments now in use to achieve this goal are seismograph(地震仪) and tilt (倾斜) meter. The former records any shaking of the earth. Seismologists ca accurately record the exact time, location and size of an earthquake. The latter, as the name suggests, is used to record any changes in the tilt of the land. 36. ( B) No one can believe that the over 6.300-kilometer-long Great Wall might disappear some day. Believe it or not, the Great Wall is being destroyed by people. Less than 20% of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty, is still perfect, but about 80% is in danger. The Great Wall can be called “great” mostly because of its amazing length. But we should realize that the length was made up of one brick at a time. If we do nothing to save the Great Wall, it will become a series of separate wasteland rather than a historic site. The Great Wall is actually a series of walls built and rebuilt by different dynasties over the past 2,000 years. It began in the Qin Dynasty (221206BC), and lasted into the Ming Dynasty. The parts built before the Ming Dynasty have nearly disappeared. People are familiar with sections such as Badaling in Beijing and Jiayuguan Pass in Gansum because they have been open to tourists for many years. But those sections far away from the public eyes have been almost forgotten. Few local people knew the 3-metre-high walls made of earth and stones beside them are part of the Great Wall. The lack of knowledge is considered as one of the main reasons behind human. The bricks on the Great Wall are carried off by countryside people to build their houses, sheep corrals(畜栏) and pigsties. Some were taken away to build roads. Bricks carved with peoples names are put away as remembrances. Rubbish is spread over the battlements. The bricks can be sold for 15 yuan per tractor load. Those who destroyed and are destroying the Wall know its name , but are not clear about its cultural meaning . It will take a long time to let them know this. The local farmers not only carried off the body of the Wall but also dug out the entire base. It is necessary to protect the Great Wall. First of all, the officials should be aware of the importance of the Great Wall. Young Chinese should know more about the nations great civilization and learn to live it. 39. According to the passage, whats the author worrying about the Great Wall?A. It is useless from now on.B. It will be replaced by a new one.C. Some parts of it are being destroyed.D. Circuit boards are the foundation for the chips that drive your computer, cellphone and so on. These square boards range in size from a couple inches to more than 50 square inches. They are made from petroleum (), which some scientists say carries an environmental problem- not to mention that petroleum is a limited resource. Dr Wool says that chicken feathers have a few qualities that work perfectly for circuit boards. The feathers are lightweight and hollow. Circuit boards need to be made out of something that allows electrons to zip() along as quickly as possible. Electrons are negative, so as Dr Wool says, anytime they pass something positive, they slow sown to take a look. Slow down the electrons, and you slow down your computer. The best material for electrons to zip through is air, and that is where the hollowness of feathers comes in handy. Simply grind () them and mix them with soybean oil. The resin () hardens, holding the feather fibers in place, and immediately, a lighter. Stronger circuit board is ready for you to use as many computer chips as you might want. Dr Wool says it will probably take about one feather per square inch to make these boards, and though he owes a certain allegiance () to chicken feathers, almost any feathers will work.43. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT the reason why Dr Richard Wool wants to use the chicken feathers to make electronic circuit boards?A. Because they are hollow.B. One strict mother insisted that her son right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in , and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me . His mother was ashamed. “ I dont know what to do with him these days,” she said. “Hes forgotten all the manners we taught him.”He hasnt forgotten them. Hes just decided that hes not going to use them. She confessed(坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say ,”I dont like your dress, its ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.“ Where did we go wrong?” her parents ar
