Whenever I speak to a Chinese student they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate. So you need to follow the rules for grammar and use the right words and spell them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, that is, to talk to someone in English ,as quickly and as well as you can ,even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense ,but it doesnt matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears. The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking. Forth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go. If you do not use your English beyond the classroom you will forget what English you know. Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.36What is most probably the writers purpose in writing the passage?ATo improve your reading. BTo improve your listening.CTo improve your spoken English. DTo improve your vocabulary.37. We can learn from the third paragraph that _.A. Fluency is more important than accuracy.B. Which of the following is true about Chinese students?A. They are passive learners.B. They are active in looking for a chance to practice their oral English.C. They tend to wait for somebody to speak to them in English.D. They speak English slowly without mistakes.39The last paragraph is close to the meaning of _AMore hurry, less speed BBetter late than neverCSilence is gold DPractice makes perfect40The text is most probably taken from a _.Aa novel Breport on study Csports newspaper Dmovie magazine B When should a child start learning to read and write? This is one of the questions I am most frequently asked. There is no hard and fast rule, for no two are alike, and it would be wrong to set a time when all should start being taught the intricacies(复杂)of reading letters to form words. If a three-year-old wants to read (or even a two-year-old for that matter), the child has the right to be given every encouragement. The fact that he or she might later be “bored” when joining a class of non-readers at child school is the teachers affair. It is up to the teacher to see that such a child is given more advanced reading material. Similarly, the child who still cannot read by the time he goes to junior school at the age of seven should be given every help by teachers and parents alike. They should make certain that he is not dyslexic (having difficulty in reading). Although parents should be careful not to force youngsters aged two to five to learn to read (if badly done it could put them off reading for life), there is no harm in preparing them for simple recognition of letters by labeling various items in their rooms. For instance, tie a nice piece of cardboard to their bed with BED written in neat, big letters. Should the young child ask his parents to teach him to read, and if the parents are capable of doing so, such an attraction should not be ignored. But the task should never be made to look like a hard job and the child should never be forced to continue, or his interest should start to flag.41. This passage is mainly about _.A. what qualities people teaching children reading should haveB. different age groupings of children to be taught readingC. when and how children should be taught readingD. various problems of children who start learning to read42. In the writers opinion, children start learning to read _.A. early and fast B. at different times C. by a certain rule D. from word games43. A three-year-old child who wants to read should _.A. be encouraged B. go to an infant schoolC. start from fun stories D. join a class of non-readers44. The purpose of labeling items in the room is to _.A. make it more colorful B. teach children to write neatlyC. help children recognize simple letters D. force children to develop the habit of reading45. The writer suggests that _.A. children should ask their parents to teach them to readB. children should not feel bored if given advanced reading materialC. children starting to read should ask specialists for helpD. children should be taught with patience, care and a sense of humor C Superman, Spider-Man, Batman and Iron Man . .There is no shortage of superheroes. You find them in comic books, on the TV and the big screen. In a survey of fans by the sci-fi (科幻) and fantasy website, SFX.co.uk, Batman, 70 years old this year, was voted Britains favorite superhero. Unlike many crime-fighting superheroes, Batman has no special powers. He cant fly like Superman or shoot a sticky (粘性的) web like Spider-Man. Bruce Wayne is born to a wealthy Gotham City business family. However, when his parents are murdered, his life changes completely. Wayne feels angry at their deaths and guilty that he did not prevent them. He travels around the world learning how to fight. Upon returning to Gotham, he creates a disguise (伪装) to enable him to fight crime without being recognized. A childhood fear of bats leads him to choose to dress as one. His idea is that through the bat persona (角色) he can prove to himself that he has overcome his childhood fears. Wayne is the CEO of the company he inherits (继承) from his father. He seems to live the lifestyle of a millionaire playboy. But this is a ruse (计策). He works hard at the image to allow himself the freedom he needs to do his work as a crime fighter. Bruce Wayne, playboy is the disguise(伪装); Batman is the real person. Wayne is not a born superhero. Instead, he is a real, complex person, said Dace Golder, editor of the website. He is the most realistic of all the superheroes. I am particularly interested in the emotional process by which a boy becomes a hero.46. What is the article mainly about? A. How Bruce Wayne develops into a superhero. B. How to overcome childhood fears.C. What makes a superhero. D. Why superheroes enjoy great popularity in Britain.47. Batman differs from other superheroes in that _. A. he was not a born superheroB. he had an unhappy childhoodC. he doesnt have any special powers D. he does his best to fight crime48. He needs to disguise his crime fighting activities.50. Which of the following statements is true about Batman? A. Batman is a born superhero.B. He has special powers.C. The turning point of his life is due to his parents sudden deaths.D. He actually lives the lifestyle of a millionaire playboy. D Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and ferociously scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They cannot or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a persons health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etcIn general the person feels excited and ready to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger ferociously may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.” Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.51The underlined word “ferociously” in Paragraph 2 probably means _. Amildly Bfiercely Cfrequently Dhardly52. Which statement is right?
