Many times than not, containers would be misplaced due to the lack of information between communicated among the workers, on the ground, and administration staff scheduling the inbound and outbound of containers. Figure 1 depicts a pictorial representation of the ways with which containers are stacked in a typical container yard or depot.1.2 Our proposed solutionThe solution proposed is to provide a workable and efficient container location management system. The LVS comprises of a mixed of technology, GPS for location tracking, infra sensing for height tracking, Container Number Recognition System (CNRS) and a wireless last mile technology, which could be either satellite, WiMaX, WiFi or GSM/3G. The container lifter with the LVS attached, will be moving around in the port to carry the container from one location to another, as the lifter release the container in the correct location, it will trigger the LVS to activate the GPS system to get the Latitude (X) and Longitude (Y) coordinate of the container lifer location. This coordinates received from the GPS will be sent to the Control Station via the wireless last mile system. As for the Height (Z) of the container, it will be determine by using an infra sensor embedded on to the lifter arm with a predefine Height (Z) value being specified. For example, if the lifter put the container on the floor, the first infra sensor will be activated and the LVS will send the value Z=50 to control station, and if the lifter put the next container on to the top of the previous one, the second infra sensor will be activated and so on for very height change.
