Unit 1 任务型阅读Zheng He, the Columbus of the East, was an amazing man.He was born in 1371 and 11 years later, was caught by the army of a rich young man called Zhu Di and made to work for him. Over time the rich man saw tha Zheng HE was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403 Zhu Di was made the King of China and he asked Zheng He to join his new government. The king wanted to learn more about the world and show other countries his power. He lrdered many new ships to be built and made Zheng He their leader. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He led seven sea trips to different parts of the world. He certainly travelled to India, Africa and the Middle East. A few people think his ships may have even reached south America and Australia. Each trip lasted between two and four years and it is believed he sailed more than 50,000 kilometrs during the years of his travels. With 28,000 men and over 300 ships, such as boats for food, water and even soldiers horses, Zheng He led a fleer(舰队)whose size would not be equaled by Europeans for over 500 years later. On these trips he brought with him many Chinese goods like silk and medicine to give to foreign kings or to sell for local goods. He returned from each trip with boats filled with expensive things such as gold and jewellery, foreign guests and strange animals like a giraffe. It is a pity that we may never learn everything about Zheng Hes travels. After he died in 1433, the new king, who believed these trips were unlucky and too expensive, had them stop and he burned almost all the books about Zheng Hes travels. It is only in the last 50years that historians have begun to carefully study the adventures of the great Zheng He.In 1371Zheng He was born. He was1. and strong. In 2. Zheng He was caught by Zhu Di. Every culture in the world has its own taboos. The breaking of a taboo sometimes makes people feel uncomfortable. I learned this through my own experience.Last weekend, Wang Lin and I showed two foreigners around our city. Mr Singh was from India and Mr White from USA. When I held out my left hand to shake hands with him, Mr singh seemed to be unhappy. Mr white, however, was quite casual. He said hello to me with a big smile and a wave of his hand.In the evening, we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. I noticed that Mr Singh didnt touch the beef and Mr white seemed not to like chickens claws. During the meal, Wang Lin said sorry to Mr Singh and continued to explain that we didnt know it was a taboo in India, to shake ones left hand. Mr Singh explained that since oxen are sacred in India, people dont eat beef there. Mr white joined in and said that it was not usual in the states for people to eat chickens claw. He went on to say that Americans dont usually get into each others personal space. Marriage, job and age are their taboos. Unit 3Its a good idea for families to talk about what they would do to escape from a fire. Do you know what to do if there is a fire in your flat? Here are some tips for you:1. Shout out. Shout as loudly as you can. Because people may be asleep.2. Call 119. Never try to put out a fire yourself. Tell 119 where you are and whats on fire.3. Keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there, so its easier to breathe and see where you are going.4. Test the door. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If not, do not open it! Try to find a different way out.5. Get out. Do not stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!6. Dont use the lift. Always use the stairs. The lift may go wrong and keep you inside.7. Dont go back even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it. Animals have a very good sense of smell. They often get out of buildings before people.1. to do in a fireShout 2. so that people can hear you.It is dangerous to put out a fire 3. Here is some advice for you: Before an earthquake. Its necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know some useful telephone numbers(doctor, hospital, police, 119, etc.). Never put heavy things over beds. During an earthquake. Its important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong desk or a strong table. It can protect yourself from falling things. Stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy things and so on. If you are cooking, turn off the gas. If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings. Stay in your car. After an earthquake. Once the shaking stops, do not run out of the building at once. Its better to wait and leave when it is safe. Check around you and help the people in trouble. If your building is badly broken, you should leave it. If you smell or hear a gas, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report it to the gas station.1. to do in time of earthquakeBefore an earthquake2. yourself and your family.Dont 3. to turn off gas, water and electricity.Remember some useful telephone numbers and not to 4. heavy things over beds.5. an earthquake6. calm is important for each of you.Moving to a safe place in the room can protect yourself from falling things if you are 7. .Remember to turn off the gas if you are cooking.Moving to an open area and away from buildings is 8. if you are outdoors.Remember to stop your car and stay in it if you are driving. After an earthquakeRun out of the building 9. its safe.Check around you and help the people in trouble.Leave your badly broken building. Before you turn off gas 10. get everyone outside and windows and doors opened.Unit 5Thomas Edison was a great American inventor. He was born on February 11th in 1847 at Milan, Ohio and died on October 18th, 1931. When he was a child he was always trying out new ideas. One day when he was five years old, his father saw him sitting on some eggs. He asked him why he was doing that. Tom didnt answer. Instead, he asked his father, “Hens are able to have chicks, why cant I?” Young Tom was in school for only three months. During those three months he asked a lot of questions. Most of these questions were not about his lessons. His teacher did not understand him. The boy had so many strange questions that the teacher could hardly answer all of them. So he wanted to send Tom away from school. He told Toms mother that Tom was not clever, and he asked her to take the boy out of the school. So Toms mother took him out of school, and taught him herself. She taught him to read and write, and she found him a very talented student. He learnt very fast. Even before he was ten he became very interested in science. He grew vegetables in his garden and sold them. With the money he set up a chemical laboratory in the cellar of his home in 1857. Thomas Edison was awarded 1,368 separate and different patents during his lifetime. His first patented invention was an electrical vote recorder in 1868. During 176-1877, invented the photograph. In 1891, he invented and patented the motion picture camera. In 1897, he invented the first commercially practical incandescent electric lamp. During 1900-1910, he invented and perfected the steel alkaline storage battery.NameThomas EdisonYear of 1.1847Year of 2.1931His learningTom had only three-month school 3. Teenagers always say they are growing up. They can have part-time jobs. They can drive cars. And they can even get married when theyre a little bit older. Their parents say, “Our children are very good. They like pop music, but they play it in their own room. They help in the house. You know they feel bored sometimes because theres nothing interesting in the neighborhood, no clubs, and no sports. They have nothing to do.” A teacher says that he believes most young people are very kind. He thinks that its not bad for young people to like loud music because it can give them lots of energy and make them feel excited. Also, a lot of young people work very hard at school, and they can get good jobs later. Lewis, a sixteen-year-old boy said, “I have passed all my examinations, but I cant get a part-time job because older people always think Im lazy.” In my opinion, a lot of teenagers are very kind. They belong to community work groups. They help old people, and they also volunteer in local hospitals or primary schools to help look after patients and younger students.1. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns(刺) to tell animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy. When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very fast and become strong enough to face challenges(挑战) in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit. It is not until the trees are 20 to 25 years old that they become real adults. The trees reach their largest sizes. Adult trees give us many things such as oxygen(氧气) and natural beauty. If we give them good care, they will go on to live healthy for many years. As time goes on, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. In many ways, the life of trees is like our own life experience. A shocking earthquake has hit Wenchuan country, Sichuan Province, China, on 12th, May. The earthquake hit the town at 2:28 p.m. It measured 7.8 in the Richter Scale(later we know it is 8.0). It has destroyed nearly everything in Wenchuan country Sichuan Province. It was terrible. We cant describe the scene that we saw with any words. Thousands of people have been injured even died. And thousands of children become such unlucky ones who have lost fathers of mothers, they long to have families to continue their lives. We are sympathetic to their fate! What an unbelievable thing! But we believe that we can fight against the fate and change it. Fortunately, love is around us: the Communist Party helps us, the army helps us, the people all over the world help us. They will offer us with money, goods, love and so on! With the help of such a large love, we will overcome the damage of the earthquake and face our beautiful future!Type of 1.earthquake2.12th,May,2008time3. Richer Scale(in fact)4. It began in the 11th century, but it has developed greatly in the last century. Lets take a look at five top inventions. Movable type(活字印刷): By using movable type, books could be printed cheaply and easily. Bi Sheng invented Movable Type in China in the 11th century. Telephone: The inventor Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call in 1876. “Mr Watson, come here. I want you,” he said to his assistant over the phone line. And with those famous words, the world was about to get much smaller. Airplane: The Wright brothers made the first powered flight in 1903. Air travel has made the faraway places suddenly become a lot closer. Internet: When the Internet was created in 1969, only a few people knew about it. But more than 650 million people in the world use it now. The Internet has made information about anything easy to get.Title: the 1. make the world smallerMovable typetelephoneairplaneinternet2. 3. His father was an electric engineer and his mother was a performing pianist. His sister, Anne Spielberg, became a screenwriter who wrote the stories for many famous films. Stephen had always wanted to be a director ever since he was a young boy. When he was just 13 years old, he made a 40-minute film. It won a local competition. Three years later, he produced a film called Firelight, which made one hundred dollars profit at the cinema in his hometown. Many of the ideas from this film were later used for one of his most famous films called Close encounters of the third kind. When he was 18 years old, he wanted to go to film school so that he could improve his skills and become an even better director. Unluckily, he was unsuccessful in getting a place at this school so he went to a university in California to study English. Even though he had fail
