First, I would like to give you a brief overview of Temple of Solitary Joy.Solitary Joy Temple is located in the center of the ancient city of Ji County, commonly known as Big Buddha Temple which is a large wooden architecture of Chinas ancient masterpiece. It combines the ancient architectures, frescoes, statues, and it has become one of the first national key cultural relics protection units in 1961.Solitary Joy Temple is comprised of east, west and central parts, monks rooms and Xanadus in the east and west parts, temple gate and the Avalokitesvara Pavilion in the central part. According to historical record, in the second year (984) of the Tonghe reign, the temple was rebuilt. Except the temple gate and Avalokitesvara Pavilion built in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), other buildings in the temple were all built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). We can see three words “Dule Temple” written on a board just in the middle of the gate which is the calligraphy of great scholar Yan Song of Ming Dynasty.Lets keep moving. Now we come to the Hall of Heaven King, where are painted the four heaven kings on the east and west sides. What the Four kings holding mean” Feng Tiao Yu Shun”, which reflect good wishes for harvest of ancient working people.Through the gate, we see the main building Avalokitesvara Pavilion. From outward appearance, it is divided into two layers, but in the middle there is an invisible layer, so actually the whole structure has three wooden layers ,and it is one of the oldest Chinas existing wooden high-rise loft buildings. Lets look up. Under the eave there is a gold-filled square plaque, which is written “Pavilion of Kwan-yin”, inscribed Tai Bai at lower left by Li Bai. Hes a famous poet of Tang Dynasty. Copper bells are hung under eaves corners, what a specially refined scene when they swaying with the wind. The most attractive thing is the roof structure. The wood system of brackets is connected by mortise and tendon joints and not a single nail is used for connection. It makes the eaves of the pavilion look like flying, far and deep in the sky, what a beautiful and magnificent view. Entering the Pavilion, firstly we can see a huge standing Avalokitesvara Statue. If one stands by it, his height is only up to her ankle. The Statue is 16.27 meters in height, is the biggest clay sculpture of Avalokitesvara in China. Two statues of attendant Bodhisattvas are also 3 meters in height. On the crown of the Avalokitesvara, there are 10 small heads, so it is called 11 faces Avalokitesvara.The statue is in the center of the Pavilion, and its surrounded by two rows of pillars. The roof beams are settled around the statue, and there is an octagonal sunk panel over the head of the statue. The four walls of the pavilions first floor are all decorated with color frescoes, include 16 Arhats, a Buddha with 3 heads and 6 arms, the Ming King with 4 arms, sceneries and folk customs, which are all masterpieces done by famous painters in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.The Avalokitesvara Pavilion and The Gate of Solitary Joy Temple are the representatives of Chinese oldest wooden architecture, and its great architectural technique let it go through 28 times of intense earthquakes. Solitary Joy Temple has been repaired for several times after the foundation of New China.
