The humorous story bubbles gently along the other two burst. The humorous story is strictly a work of art high and delicate art and only an artist can tell it; but no art is necessary in telling the comic and witty stories, anybody can do it. The art of telling a humorous story I mean by word of mouth, not print was created in America, and has remained at home. The humorous story is told gravely; the teller does his best to conceal the fact that he even dimly suspects that there is anything funny about it; but the teller of the comic story tells you beforehand that it is one of the funniest things he has ever heard, then tells it with eager delight, and is the first person to laugh when he gets through. And sometimes if he has had good success, he is so glad and happy that he will repeat the nub of it and glance, around from face to face, collecting applause, and then repeat it again. It is a pathetic thing to see.61. Which story takes the longest to tell?A) The humorous story.B) The witty story.C) The comic story.D) All three take the same amount of time.62. In that one year, there was one murder committed in every 24 minutes, one case of robbery in every 10 minutes and one case of rape in every 7 minutes. The cause of murder involved a number of 21,456 victims. Most acts of violence were committed by young people. 57% of the criminals arrested in 1979 were youth below 25 of age.Everyone agrees that crime is partly a result of bad material conditions: poverty, lack of education, living without a settled home, being parentless, sufferings from other kinds of misfortune, etc. There are also other factors than material conditions which are responsible for the sharp increase of crime rate. In the first place, some state laws provide for a death penalty but some not. Secondly, the Constitution allows every citizen to carry weapons for his own protection. It is therefore possible and easy for anyone in the country to get a gun. Finally, there has been too much shown on TV and too much reported in newspaper of all kinds of crimesthe details of which are so accurately described that even children know how to duplicate what they have seen or read. All these have resulted in a higher frequency of crimes committed both by professional criminals and by nonprofessional ones in murder, drug smuggling, robbery, pocket-pocking, etc.66. In this passage, the author intends to tell the reader that _.A) the United States is a wealthy country although poverty and crime exist thereB) Crime has become a serious problem in the United States although it is said to be a prosperous countryC) Despite the fact that crimes have been increasing rapidly in the United States, it is a country of posterityD) In spite of stories about poverty and crime in the United States, it is prospering at an increasing rate.67. Which of the following is not mentioned but implied by the author as responsible for the sharp increase of crime rate?A) Being poor.B) Being parentless.C) Being unemployed.D) Being Homeless69. Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?A) Everyone agrees that a bad material condition is the only reason for crime.B) The constitution of the U. S. guarantees the right of every citizen to possess weapons for his own protection.C) Too much crime shown on TV has, at least partly, resulted in a higher rate of crime in the U.S.D) More than half of the criminals arrested in 1979 were young people under 25.70. The tone of the author in this passage is one of _.A) anger B) sadnessC) matter-of-factnessD) hopelessnessPassage 3What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but Im short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you dont want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.Research has also been done into the way peoples behaviour changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch.Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man watching call “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself of herself from lying.Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.71. According to the passage, a “white lie” seems to be a lie _ .A) that other people believeB) that other people dont believeC) told in order to avoid offending someoneD) told in order to take advantage of someone72. Research suggests that women _. A) are better at telling less serious lies than menB) generally lie far more than men doC) often make promises they intend to breakD) lie at parties more often than men do 73. Researchers find that when a person tell lies _.A) his blood pressure increases measurablyB) he looks very seriousC) he tends to make some small changes in his behaviourD) he uses his unconscious mind74. One reason people sometimes rub their noses when they tell lie is that _.A) they wish they were somewhere elseB) the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused by lying C) they want to cover their mouthsD) they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies75. Which of the following may best betray a liar?A) The touching of the tip of ones nose.B) The changes of ones behaviour.C) “The mouth cover”gesture.D) The circumstanc
