Choose the ONE you think is the best answer. Mark your choice by blacking the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. The sea is the largest unknown part of our world. It covers seventy-one percent of the earth. There is still much to be discovered about this vast blanket of water. One of the most interesting projects in oceanography(海洋学) is the work of mapping the ocean floor. Only a very small part of it has been mapped. This was not important when only surface ships sailed the worlds oceans, but it can mean the difference between life and death to men in submarines(潜艇).Long ago there was only one way to find out how deep the ocean was. A seaman could throw a weighted rope over the side of his ship. Then he pulled the rope up after it had reached the bottom. But this was not a very exact way of measuring. In the twentieth century a better way was found. Sound was used to measure the ocean. An American Navy ship sailed into a narrow strip of water to conduct an experiment. Seamen dropped a number of devices that would burst with a loud noise when they hit the bottom. And a little instrument that had been invented measured the time it took for the sound to reach the ship. This has helped oceanographers map the ocean floor.Underwater photography is also important in mapping parts of the ocean floor. With the new methods that have been perfected, cameras can take pictures of the underwater valleys, even in color.16.The sea covers _. A. less than a quarter of the earth B. about half of the earth C. almost three quarters of the earth D. more than three quarters of the earth17.The work of mapping the ocean floor is very important to _. A.surface ships B. people in submarines C. ancient people D. an American Navy ship 18.According to the passage, a seaman _. A. used to find out the oceans depth with the help of a weighted rope B. could find out the exact depth of the ocean a long time ago C. had no way to know the depth of the ocean D. didnt care much about the depth of the ocean 19.A little instrument can measure the time it takes for the sound to _. A. hit the bottom of the sea from the ship B. reach the ship from the bottom of the sea C. burst into a loud noise D. disappear into silence 20.The main idea of the last paragraph is that _. A. another aid to the mapping of the ocean floor is photography B. every camera is able to take pictures in color C. the ocean floor is perfect as seen in pictures D. some new ways of mapping have been found Passage 2Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. Scientists have found an unusual way to prevent our planet from overheating: Move it to a cooler spot. All you have to do is send a few comets(彗星) in the direction of Earth, and its orbit(轨道)will be altered. Our world will then be sent spinning(旋转) into a safer, colder part of the solar system(太阳系). This startling idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineers and American astronomers(天文学家). They say their plan could add another six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planet effectively doubling its working life. The plan put forward by Dr. Laughlin involves carefully directing a comet so that it passes close to Jupiter or Saturn and picks up energy from one of these giant planets. Then the comet would pass close by our planet and transfer some of its gravitational(引力的) energy to Earth. And the process would be repeated. “Earths orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from the Sun,” Laughlin said. In the short term, the plan provides an ideal solution to global warming, although the team was actually concerned with a more drastic danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so seriously compromise our biosphere(生物圈) by cooking us. Hence the groups decision to try to save Earth. The plan has one or two worrisome aspects, however. For a start, space engineers would have to be very careful about how they directed their comet towards Earth. The smallest miscalculation(计算错误) in orbit could fire it straight at Earth with deadly consequences. There is also the question of the Moon. As the current issue of Scientific American magazine points out, if Earth was pushed out of its current position it is “most likely the Moon would be stripped away from Earth,” it states. This would radically upset our planets climate.21.The ultimate purpose of this plan is to _. A. solve the problem of global warming B. prevent Earth from overheating C. change the orbit of Earth D. change the spinning speed of Earth22.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a result of the plan? A. Earths orbital speed would increase. B. The lifespan of Earth would be more than doubled. C. Earth would move to a higher orbit away from the Sun. D. Earth would be sent to a colder part of the solar system.23.Which of the following is the right sequence(顺序) of the four steps involved in the plan? A. c a b d B. c d b a C. c b d a D. b a c d a. The comet transfers some of its gravitational energy to Earth.b. The comet passes close by Earth. c. Scientists direct a comet so that it passes close to Jupiter or Saturn. d. The comet picks up energy from Jupiter or Saturn.24. According to the passage, the word “compromise” in Para. 8 is closest in meaning to _. A. change B. improve C. ruin D. reduce 25.What worries the scientists about the plan? A. The sun will continue to heat up in the years to come.B. The moon would move closer to Earth and this would change our planets climate. C. The process must be repeated and take a long time. D. The comet would hit Earth if its trajectory(轨道) is miscalculated.Passage 3Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
