On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and rehearsed (practiced) all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I havent lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. Its about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the custom for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it. No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me. When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all the curiosity my arrival aroused. My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didnt stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu”, and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: “Portsmouth”, and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didnt make me very popular, of course. “He thinks hes clever,” I heard Brian say. After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brians team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper. “Hes big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me. I suppose Mr. Jones remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the players on the other team, and he gave them a penalty. As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down instinctively and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me. “Do you want to join my gang (team)?” he said. At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.21. The writer prepared to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT “_”. A. How old are you?B. Where are you from? C. Do you want to join my gang?D. When did you come back to London?22. The underlined part “I didnt stand out” in paragraph 3 means that the writer was not _. A. noticeableB. welcomeC. importantD. outstanding23. The writer was offered a handkerchief because _. A. he threw himself down and saved the goalB. he pushed a player on the other team C. he was beginning to be acceptedD. he was no longer a new comerBMouth bacteria grow fast in airless conditions. Oxygen rich saliva (唾液) keeps their numbers down. When we sleep, for example, the saliva stream slows, and sulfur (硫) producing bacteria gains the upper hand, producing classic “morning breath”. Alcohol drinking, too much talking, breathing through the mouth during exercise, anything that dries the mouth produces bad breath. So can stress, though its not understood why. Some peoples breath turns sour every time they go on a job interview. Saliva flow gradually slows with age, which explains why the elderly have more bad breath trouble than younger people do. Babies, however, who make plenty of saliva and whose mouths contain relatively few bacteria have characteristically sweet breath. For most of us, the simple, dry mouth variety of bad breath is easily cured. Eating or drinking starts saliva and sweeps away many of the bacteria. Breakfast often stops morning breath. Those with constant dry mouth find that it helps to keep gum, hard candy, or a bottle of water or juice around. Brushing the teeth wipes out dry mouth bad breath because it clears away many of the offending bacteria.Surprisingly, one thing that rarely works is mouthwash. The liquid can mask bad breath smell with its own smell, but the effect lasts no more than an hour. Some mouthwashes claim to kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath. The trouble is, they dont necessarily reach all offending germs. Most bacteria are well protected from mouthwash under thick layers of mucus (粘液). If the mouthwash contains alcoholas most doit can worsen the problem by drying out the mouth.24. Which of the following is mentioned as one of the causes of bad breath?A. Tooth trouble.B. Sulfur rich food. C. Mental pressure.D. Too much exercise.25. According to the passage, alcohol has something to do with bad breath mainly because _. A. it keeps offending bacteria from reproducing B. its smell adds to bad breath C. it kills some helpful bacteriaD. it affects the normal flow of saliva26. Mouthwashes are not an effective cure for bad breath mainly because _. A. they cant mask the bad odor long enough B. they cant get to all the offending bacteria C. their strong smell mixes with bad breath and makes it worse D. they cant cover the thick layers of mucus27. We can infer from this passage that _. A. offensive breath cant easily be cured B. elderly people are less offended by bad breath C. heavy drinkers are less affected by bad breathD. offensive breath is less affected by alcohol七选五 71 You probably think you will never be a top student.
