Youll see John when you go to Beijing next week.A) The above sentence refers to the future, but the verb in the when-clause is in the simple present tense. The same rule applies if the connective is before, as soon as, until, if, unless, although, even if, in case, though, so long as, whatever, wherever etc.E.g. When he arrives hell tell us all about the match.Before she arrives well give the children their tea.Well have a rest after we finish the job.Well go climbing the mountain even if it rains. B) Other types of simple present tense referring to the futurea. The that clause following “I hope”, “I bet”, etc.E.g. I hope you have a good time. I hope she likes the flowers. I bet it rains tomorrow.b. The clause following such constructions as “see to it”, “make sure”, “make certain” Ill see (to it) /make sure/ make certain (that) you dont get lost.2. You saw John when you went to Beijing last month.The above sentence refers to the past. Both verbs are in the simple past tense.E.g. She watched TV after she went home. He trembled as soon as he saw his boss.3. Ive been playing the piano since I was a child.1) The verb/ verb phrase in the since clause is usually in the simple past. When the connective is since, the verb/verb phrases in the main clause, when referring to an action, is usually in the present perfect or the present perfect progressive form; when referring to time, however, it is usually in the simple tense. E.g. Ive worked here since I left school.He has been studying linguistics since he went to the United States.Its three month since he wrote to me.2) Compare the two sentences:a. Its ten years since I began to play the piano.b. Ive been playing the piano for ten years.Since indicates a starting pointing in time, whereas for indicates the duration of time.4. He wont arrive until four. (= He will arrive at four.)Ill wait until he arrives. (= Hell no longer wait when he arrives.)Until in the first sentence is a preposition, and that in the second sentence is a connective, meaning “ up to a certain time/ up to the time when”. Other examples:Ill stay here until she comes. (= I wont stay here after she comes.)He wont finish the job until four. (= He will finish the job at or after four.) DIALOGUE II. Thank you for doing sth E.g. Thank you for helping me across the road. Pay attention to : Thank you for nothing,(表示蔑视的拒绝)得了,别瞎起劲。4. a straight A studenta student who receives an A for every course he/she takes.5. I hope you wont mind me asking a few questions about your stage life.Mind: to have a reason against; to be opposed to Mind sb doing sthPay attention to the answer:Do you mind waiting for an hour or two? 你介意等一两个钟头吗?Yes, I mind very much.我可不能等。Would you mind opening the door?请把门打开好吗?Certainly not.当然好。6. I couldve done better: 我本可以做得更好。 Could + present perfect tenseA).It expresses the ability in the past. But the action wasnt carried out. E.g. I could have lent you the money. Why didnt you ask me?B). It expresses the occasion on which the speaker doesnt know whether the action has been taken. E.g. The money has disappeared! Who could have taken it? Tom could have, he was here alone yesterday.C). It can also express the speakers complaint to sb for not doing somethingYou could have told me.= Im disappointed that you didnt tell me. You should have told me.7. long : v. to want very much long to do sth long for sth E.g. to long to go to long for freedom to long for the festival n. longing adv. Longingly8. I would always put upPut up :上演剧本More phrases: put about put away put forth put forward9. I volunteered on every occasion to play a role in childrens plays.a). vlunteer: give or offer (ones help, a suggestion, etc) willinglyvlunteer (sth) (for sth) E.g. She volunteered her service for relief work. vlunteer to do sth; volunteer to join the armyb).occasion;意为时刻、场合,其前接介词on on great occasion 在大庆期间 on numerous occasions无数次 on the occasion of 值此之际 on occasion 有时 rise to the occasion 善于随机应变 take this/that occasion 乘机去做;抓住机会10. Here it uses metonymy.Metonymy: substituting the name of one thing for that of another with which it is closely associated. E.g.: Grey hair should be respected. (Grey hair refers to the old people) The hall applauded (the hall refers to the audience) There are about a hundred hands working in his factory. (hands refer to the workers.) White house; American government13. go off well: be successfulThe performance went off well. 演出很成功How did the concert go off?音乐会开得如何?14. more than: veryE.g.: We were more than happy to hear of your escape.more than : its more true to say than E.g.: He is more mad than stupid.no more than: neitherE.g.: He cant afford a new car, and no more than can I. The more the more E.g.: The more, the merrier.15. be conscious of = be aware ofEgs: be conscious of ones guilt A healthy man is not conscious of his breathing.16.
