When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. The first and basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as cars and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. Rather than other levels, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, entertainment, and fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. On this level, a great percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more and more on taxes to pay government action against diseases, crime, and so on. At this stage, we may seek to ensure the health, safety and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.31Altogether there are _ levels of human wants.A7B6C5D432According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when he has _.Asaved enough moneyBgrown dissatisfied with simple shelterCsatisfied his hungerDlearned to build houses33It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War most Americans _.Awere very richBlived in povertyChad the good things on the first three levelsDdid not own cars34All of the following except _ are related to “physical satisfactions”.Aa successful careerBa comfortable homeCa good serviceDa family car35The main concern of man on the fourth level is _.Athe more goods the betterBthe more mental satisfaction the betterCthe more expensive items the betterDthe more earnings the betterBA characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self- made man the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common labourer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or labourer of some sort. This attitude toward manual labour is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is well furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterwards; furthermore, the dinner will not only consist of something quickly and easily made from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds and painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction team on a highway in order to pay for his education.36From Paragraph 1, we can know that in America _.Apeople tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manBpeople can always rise to the top through their own effortsCcollege professors win great respect from common workersDpeople feel painful to mention their fathers as labourers37According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because _.Aservants in America are hard to getBshe takes pride in what she can do herselfCshe can hardly afford servantsDit is easy to prepare a meal with canned food38The underlined expression “wait on table” in the second paragraph means“ _ ”.Awork in a furniture shopBkeep accounts for a barCwait to lay the tableDserve customers in a restaurant39Which of the following statements is not true?AUsually the hostess in a family which can afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children is happy to cook.BThe husband may be ready to help his wife to wash dishes.CIn order to pay for the college education, young men have to work with their own hands.DIn America the couples are willing to share the housework.40Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?AA Respectable Self- made FamilyBAmerican Attitude Toward Manual LabourCCharacteristics of American CultureDThe Development of Manual LabourB卷从右栏中选出左栏单词的意思(15题,15分)1skillful(A)willing to give money to others or give them pleasure2revolution(B)to travel through or examine an area to find out what is true3protest(C)a happening, usually an important one4confident(D) to set sb. free, to let news known, to express feelings5awful(E) unable to use part of the body6disabled(F)eager or anxious to do sth.7explore(G)great social change, especially by force8release(H)be good at doing sth. especially sth. that needs special ability9struggle(I)be sure that you can do sth. successfully10generous(J) terrible, shocking11promote(K)trust, a feeling that sb. or sth. is good or able12train(L)to say or do sth. publicly to show disagreement13keen(M)a long hard fight to get freedom14event(N)to teach someone or be taught the skill of15belief(O)to help sth. to develop and be successful用方框中所给词的适当形式填空(10题,10分)quality, violence, afterwards, generous, disaster, protest, equally, skill, confidence, peace1The boat sank in a _ storm at sea.2He was _ to everybody with money.3The residents _ about the noise and dust from the construction site.4She cut the melon into six _ pieces.5The look on his face said that he was _ of success.6When p
