文档简介
Unit1Learning a foreign language is not only a very difficult and rewarding experience but also a frustrating and valuable one. When language teachers use positive methods, students fell encouraged to answer eagerly, never worrying about making mistakes. Other times, teachers who are not patient cause students to lose their excitement for answering questions and their desire to say anything in English. However, very large classes may give students fewer chances to answer and may intimidate then because of those who speak much better than they. Studying English online is not different from study in the regular classroom but it gives students freedom to think out their ideas and to write a reply before posting it on the screen. Online learning also brings many benefits such as learning the value of hard work, gaining insights into other cultures, and opening our minds to new ways of thinking. Learning a foreign language by computers makes it possible to communicate with many more people and to bridge the gap between one culture and another.Unit2Sandy is getting ready for school. She chooses to stand up to eat breakfast as she is late but her mother tells her to sit and eat as it is not healthy to stand. Her mother thinks Sandys old T-shirt with a hole in it is disgusting and suggests she wear a nice blouse from her closet. Her mother is even more concerned when she notices for the first time that Sandy is wearing makeup, including eyeliner. Sandy at fifteen is too young for makeup but Sandy announces that she has been wearing it for months and all her friends are wearing it, too. She shocks her mother by telling her that others also have tattoos and piercings as well. The mother is annoyed with Sandy who pretends not to notice and avoids any further exchange by bolting off to catch her bus to school. Sandy thinks after her brother left for college, her parents now bug her more and argue more with her than when he was at home.Unit3When I was growing up, I didnt want to be seen with my severely crippled, very short father. He would lean on me but it was difficult to coordinate our steps as his were halting and mine smooth. People stared at us and inwardly I battled this unwanted attention. If he was bothered by this, he never let on. He let me set the pace and he adjusted to me. Usually we walked to the subway which he tool to work even when sick. Once there, he would cling to the hand-rail until he got to the lower steps. I am amazed at his courage for subjecting himself to the shame. He never invited pity for himself, nor did he show envy of the more able. I dont know precisely what a good heart is but I know when I dont have one and that my gather did. Unit4Within seven seconds, a chain reaction helps you start making up your mind about others you meet. You show your true feelings, consciously or unconsciously, through your eyes, face and body because you are the message. You must use your good qualities such as physical appearance, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice and gestures so others will cooperate with you. When you ate committed to what you talk about and absorbed beyond self-consciousness, others listen to you. Because the most effective people never change, it is important to be yourself at your best and consistently communicate with your whole being. Since others believe what they see before what they hear, use your eyes to look directly at others and smile to demonstrate your ease during the exchange. You can lighten up a situation by using humor and by being your true self without any huge changed in personality. You certainly can make a good impression since only you can be you.Unit6Alone, a widow writes a painful quotation in a notebook. To understand her pain, we see a picture in her wedding album and hear about a strange event that happened at her wedding. A strange woman had told the couple she was there to tell them they were going to live a good life and be happy, that they would work hard and love each other. Every year around their anniversary, the husband and wife discussed their unique wedding guest. The wife thought she was on a heavenly mission; the husband thought she was too portly for heaven. But one night, he wrote his wife a note telling her why it did not matter where their guest come from heaven or a nearby town. What mattered was that the word gift she had given to them was true. Now he has died, the wife misses him so much that it is painful for her even to read the lines she wrote in her notebook.Unit8Creative thinking depends on what was unknown becoming clear. Unconscious processes unknown to us are the source of the instinctive thinking that is responsible for new organized concepts. All of us have experienced the sudden explosion into consciousness of a new concept when we werent thinking about it. Elsewhere we can find examples of invention among famous personalities in every field. For the philosopher Descartes, for example, a dream determined his potential life path and provided a central concept about existence. The conscious mind of the mathematical genius Poincare actually watched his unconscious at work. For Wagner, by contrast, his conscious mind at the moment of creation knew nothing of the actual processes by which the sound of water became an orchestral score. All of these examples of creative thinking depend in some degree on signals from the unconscious. The more highly insightful the person, the sharper and more dramatic the signals become.Unit10 You are either honest or you are not; there is no middle ground. Honesty is an inner moral standard you apply to judge the quality of your behavior. Honesty involves developing an appropriate morality compass with boundaries. This means you are consistent and du not progressively change your principles when it is a convenience or relative to a fashionable attraction. Honesty is in scarce supply. You must demand this discipline of yourself.
