More songs have been written about Americas biggest city, New York, than about any other city. Many others dream about leaving their small towns to go there. They want to become rich and famous. Frank Sinatra sings about this dream in the most popular song written about New York. Almost three-million people live in the middle western city of Chicago, Illinois. It is now Americas third largest city. It used to be the second largest city. So, of course, it needed its own song. Judy Garland sings the song, Chicago, Chicago. One of Americas most exciting cities is Las Vegas, Nevada. In nineteen-sixty-four, Elvis Presley starred in a movie called Viva Las Vegas. Here is the song from that movie. It is sung by the group Z-Z Top. As we all know, one of the most beautiful cities in America is San Francisco, California. The most popular song about the city is called I Left My Heart in San Francisco. Tony Bennett recorded it in nineteen-sixty-two. It sold more than three-million records. Many people love Los Angeles, California. It is now Americas second largest city. Los Angeles is popular because the weather is warm and the sun shines almost all the time. Randy Newman sings about his feelings for the city in the song, I Love L.A. Not everyone, however, loves Los Angeles. Some people do not like all the big roads around the city. They like living in a smaller place. A place like San Jose, California. Dionne Warwick sings about going back to this city. The song is, Do You Know The Way To San Jose.Songs about American CitiesStates76._Features SongsSongwriters/ BandNew YorkAmericas biggest cityA song about New York78._IllinoisChicago,79. Rich Romans visited friends and family who were working in another part of the Roman empire. But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped. In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel. They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice in Italy. Their tours lasted for two or four years and the tourist stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young peoples educationbut only for the rich.In the 18th century tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the wasters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns. In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier. Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to faraway countries. The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket process dropped and more people used them. 1._Main Tourists Places 8._2._4._in Roman empireto visit friends and family 17th century rich young people6._9._3._people in the UKsome towns10. _19th century5._7._enjoy the beauty of nature 20th century ordinary peoplefaraway countiesnot mentioned 1. Of all our festivals, the Spring Festival is the most important to us Chinese. So before it comes, everyone has to prepare things. Several days before the lunar new year, we spring-clean our houses and decorate (装饰) them. The old folk say that everything must be new and clean for the Spring Festival celebrations (庆祝) so that the new year will bring happiness and good luck. We also buy pork, beef, chicken, fruit and many other things. Parents buy new clothes for their children and children may also buy presents for their parents. The celebration begins on the eve of the lunar new year, we put up some New Year pictures. On the Festival eve, all the family members come back to their hometown. No matter how far away from home a person is, he will always try to get home in time for this big dinner. We often make a special kind of food called “dumplings”. It means “come together”. When were enjoying the meal, we give each other the best wishes for the coming year. We sing, dance and play card. On the first day of the holiday, we usually stay at home. We get up fairly early and, first thing, exchange (交换) New Year greetings. This is a happy moment for the children; they can get some pocket money. And then we let off firecracker (放爆竹) and fireworks (烟花). We enjoy ourselves very much. On the second and the third days, we go visiting relatives and friends. We sit around chatting (聊天) and eating sweets and New Year Cakes and all kinds of delicacies (珍馐美味). Each family prepares something special. Sometimes we would see some lion and dragon dancings. The celebration lasts about 15days. The 15th night of the first moon is called the Lantern Festival. This is the day when we young people go out to enjoy ourselves, and sometimes we dance folk dances far into the night. Giant storm waves have so hit the placeonce well buffered by sea icethat villagers voted in 2002 to leave their ancestral home for the mainland. They are being called one of the first refugees(难民)of global warming. “We tend to describe climate change in terms that are abstracta one degree rise in temperature, an increase in greenhouse gasesbut when waves wash away a village, thats concrete and very emotional,” says Igor Krupnik, an expert at the National Museum of Natural History. “When they lose a piece of their land, they arent just losing a certain number of square miles. They are losing part of their history and their memory. They are losing childhood events and grandparents tales.” Before temperatures began to rise in Shishmaref about 30 years ago, 20 to 30 miles of hard sea ice protected the village from powerful fall storms. But the natives say the ice doesnt freeze as solidly or as soon as it used to and now stretches only six or seven miles, leaving the community of 600 people more exposed. Storms have swept houses into the ocean. The villagers plan is to move to Tin Creek, a site on the Alaska mainland 12 miles away, and they have received $180 million from the government. Residents hope that in their new community theyll be able to maintain their close ties, continue hunting animals, and keep fishing, much as their ancestors have done for centuries. “People are asking why the government should be spending so much money on so few people,” said a government official. “But people in Alaska are like everyone else. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyones satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute without least consideration ; he does so with skill and polish:“I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size.
