Tradition has it that Leonardo Da Vinci worked for ten years upon the painting, the monks in the church annoyed at the delay. It was said that Leonardo often painted continuously from dawn to night without eating his meals. But at other times he spent hours before the picture, lost in contemplation, examining, comparing, and measuring his figures. This inactivity aroused the anger of the fussy Prior, the head of the church, who belonged to the large group of those who believed that the busier a man seems, the more he accomplishes; and so he tried to find fault with the idle(空闲的) painter. Leonardo was slightly unhappy and explained to somebody else that there is a great difference between the work of the creative artist and the stonemason(石匠). The creative artist needs time for contemplation; he may be busiest when his hands are idlest. Just now he needed two heads to complete the picture: that of Christ, for which no model on earth could be found, for where was the man to be found whose face would express the strength, and beauty, and tenderness, and deep sorrow of the Christ; then he also needed a head of Judas, and that was hard to find as well, for where was the man whose face could express the meanness of that base traitor(叛徒). But he would look no further; if none came his way, he would be satisfied to take Prior as a model for Judas. This threat silenced the angry Prior, who quite naturally had no desire to pass to descendants(后代)in such a fashion. 51. Why did the Prior complain about the delay?A. Because he thought that the painter idled most of the hours.B. Because he knew that genius(天才) might be busiest when seemingly idlest.C. Because he liked the work of a stonemason.D. Because he was eager to be taken as a model for Judas.52. What does the underlined word “contemplation ” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. possibilityB. intentionC. deep thoughtD. great expectation 53. Which of the following is true?A. The painter was pleased with the Priors complaint.B. The Prior was angry because he thought the painter did not work hard.C. The painter took one of the monks as a model for Christ.D. The painter took one of the monks as a model for Judas.54. Why did the Prior stop complaining? A. He did not wish to be remembered like an evil traitor after he died. B. He wanted to be painted as a tender Christ. C. He disliked to be painted in fashionable clothes. D. He was pleased to be a fashionable model.BThe ability to make small talk is highly valued. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures! Small talk gets friendships started and “breaks the ice” before important business meetings and other events.Making small talk is difficult not only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. This is because making small talk means talking about almost anything and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics.Lets look at some tips to improve small talk skills and some proper subjects for small talk.Do some researchSpend time on the Internet, reading magazines, or watching TV specials about the type of people you are going to meet. For example: If you are taking a class with students from other countries, take time after the first few days of class to do some research. They will appreciate your interest and your conversations will be much more interesting._While you may believe in something very strongly, beginning conversations and making small talk about your own personal convictions(信仰) may quickly end the conversation. Keep it light, dont try to convince the other person that you have the “correct” information about a higher being, religion, political system or other belief system.Use the Internet to gain specific vocabularyThis is related to doing research about other people. If you have a business meeting, or are meeting people who share a common interest (a basketball team, a tour group interested in art, etc.), take advantage of the Internet to learn specific vocabulary. Ask yourself about your cultureTake time to make a list of common interests that are discussed when making small talk in your own culture. Once you have a subject that interests both of you, keep to it! ListenThis is very important. Listening carefully will help you understand and encourage those speaking to you. You might be nervous, but letting others state their opinions will improve the quality of the discussion and give you time to think of an answer.55. A quick Internet search reveals plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozarts music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed. The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, well become more intelligent. The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozarts music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk.Ill leave the debate on the impact on milk yield to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesnt make us more intelligent.59. To be or not to be?DIN the famous fairy tale, Snow White eats the Queens apple and falls victim to a curse; in Shakespeares novel, Romeo drinks the poison and dies; some ancient Chinese emperors took pills that contained mercury, believing that it would make them immortal(不朽的), but they died afterward. Poison has long been an important ingredient in literature and history, and it seems to always be related to evil, danger and death. But how much do you really know about poison? An exhibition, The Power of Poison, opened last month at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, intended to give the audience a more vivid understanding of poison. The exhibition will continue until Aug 2014, reported The New York Times. The museum tour starts in a rainforest setting, where you can see live examples of some of the most poisonous animals: caterpillars, frogs and spiders. Golden poison frogs, for instance, arent much bigger than a coin, but their skin is covered in a poison that can cut off the signaling power of your nerves, and a single frog has enough venom to kill 10 grown humans. The exhibition also features interactive(互动的) activities. In an iPad-based game, visitors are presented with three puzzling illnesses and asked to identify the poisons based on symptoms. In one case, for example, a pet dog is found sick in a backyard and visitors have to figure out whether it was the toad (蟾蜍), the leaky batteries in the trash or the dirty pond water that did it. “Poisons can be bad for some things,” Michael Novacek, senior vice president of the museum, told NBC News. “Yet they can also be good for others.” This is what visitors learn from the last part of the exhibition, which displays how poisons can be used favorably by humans, including for medical treatment. The blood toxins of vampire bats, for example, can prevent blood from clotting (凝结), which may protect against strokes. A poisonous chemical found in the yew tree is effective against cancer, which is what led to the invention of a cancer-fighting drug called Taxol. One chemical in the venom of Gila monsters can lower the blood sugar of its victims, so it has been used to treat diabetes. The benefits from natural poisons are not limited to just medicine. Believe it or not, many substances that we regularly take in chili, coffee and chocolate, etc. owe their special flavors or stimulating effects to chemicals that plants make to poison insects.63. By mentioning Snow White and Romeo at the beginning of the story, the author intends to _.A. show that poison has long been involved in literatureB. show that poison is always linked with evil and deathC. draw readers attention to the topic of the articleD. get readers to think of more examples of the use of poison in stories64. What is the main purpose of the exhibition The Power of Poison?A. To give people more knowledge about poison.B. To teach people how to handle poisonous animals.C. To inform people about which animals are the most poisonous.D. To show how poison has been used for medical treatment.65. Which of the following statements about the exhibition is TRUE according to the article?A. The exhibition will lead visitors to a real rainforest.B.
