端午节 Tuen Ng Festival / Dragon Boat FestivalThe Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a lunar holiday. It is celenrated on the fifth day of the lunar month.It is a great holiday for every Chinese.Meanwhile, it is a holiday with the longest history among traditional Chinese festivals.Dragon boat racing, eat rice wrap Zongzi(eating rice dumplings), commemorating the ancient poet Qu Yuan; drink yellow rice wine, related to the White Snake Lady legend.The racing of dragon boats during the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional custom to attempt to save the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.A dragon boat is a very long and narrow human-powered boat.It has a history of more than 2,000 years.重阳节 Chung Yeung Festival9th day of 9th lunar month. Autumn outing and mountain climbing, some Chinese also visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects.The 9th day of the 9th lunar month is the traditional Chongyang Festival , or Double Ninth Festival. The custom of ascending a height to avoid epidemics was passed down from long time ago. On this day, people will eat Double Ninth Gao (or Cake). Enjoying the flourishing chrysanthemum also becomes a key activity on this festival.春节Chinese New YearChinese New Year is a Chinese traditional festival. We also call it the Spring Festival. It is on lunar January 1st. The year of 2011 is the year of rabitte. Its usually in January or Feburary.On New Years Eve, all the people sit around the desk and have a big family dinner. There are some vegetables, some fish, some meat, some fruits and some drink like juice, Coke, Pepsi and some nice wine. Overall, this is a good and delicious dinner. After dinner, we always watch TV New Year progammes. We have a wonderful evening on New Years Eve.On the first day of the Spring Festival, most of people get up early and say “happy new year” to each other. For breakfast, people often eat dumplings. After breakfast, people often make many delicious foods, and children often play cards, computer games and fireworks. On the second and third day, we visit friends and relatives.元宵节Spring Latern(Yuen Siu)FestivalLantern Festival,the most important festival after the Spring Festival,takes places on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.It is celebrated with lantern symbols and it is the time when the Chinese people welcome the first full moon of the New Year.The festival of the Lanterns marks the end of the New Years celebration and life goes back to normal.Among very interesting festivities of the day is latern riddes which are stuck on the surface of laterns for people to guess while enjoying the Latern Festival displays.Lantern Festival is also celebrated by eating ”Tang Yuan”.Since it looks like a round ball, it is a symbol of family unity. All the family members usually get together to enjoy them.中秋节Mid Autumn Festival15th day of 8th lunar month. Eat mooncake, family union meal, related to the legend of Chang E.Mid Autumn Festival is a traditional festival of China. It used to be as important as Spring Festival .It is usually celebrated in September or Ocotber. This festival is to celebrate the havast and to enjoy the beautiful moon light.To some extent, it is like Thanks Giving day in western countries. On this day, people usually get together with their families and have a nice meal. After that, people always eat delicious moon cakes, and watch the moon. The moon is always very round on that day, and makes people think of their relitives and friends. It is a day of pleasure and happiness. Hope you have a wonderful Mid Autumn festival!黄金周Golden WeekWe have three Golden Weeks in a year: first the Chinese New Year, second May 1 (Labor Day), and third October 1 (National Day). In fact, there are only three days in a period as public holidays. However, a Golden Week (a weeklong holiday) is made by weekend-shifting. Additional days have to be compensated by working the weekend before or after the holiday. That means people have to keep working for a period longer than five days. As the upcoming Golden Week will run from May 1 to 7, most people will have to work on Saturday (April 30) and Sunday (May 8). The government called this the long-vacation policy with which they intend to boost the so-called holiday economy that benefits tourism, entertainment and service business in China. People are expected to go shopping, go out for dinner or go on vacation in a Golden Week. A growing number of local residents plan to travel during the upcoming May Day holiday week, with overseas tours proving very popular. Local travel agencies even stopped receiving bookings now for most of their overseas tours for the May Day holiday week. But travelers will be unhappy to see the sharp price hikes for nearly all the routes, especially those lead to domestic destinations. In such a Golden Week, while some businesses turn Golden, consumers become the Weak to be ripped off!马丁路德纪念日Martin Luther King DayEach year on the third Monday of January schools, federal offices, post office and banks across America close as we celebrate the birth, the life and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.It is a time for the nation to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought. A time to remember his fight for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. A time to remember the message of change through nonviolence. It is the first new holiday since 1948, when Memorial Day was created as a prayer for peace day.独立日Independence DayIndependence Day is the national holiday of the United States of America commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.感恩节Thanksgiving DayThanksgiving Day is a harvest festival. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. It is a holiday celebrated in Canada and the United States. While perhaps religious in origin, Thanksgiving is now primarily identified as a secular holiday.The date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention. Though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida, the traditional first Thanksgiving is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621.Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members and friends.圣诞节Christmas DayChristmas is a winter holiday that we celebrate on December 25th. It is a special day because it is Jesus Christs birthday. On Christmas Day, many people will have big parties. They like eating turkey, fruits and drinking some juice for supper. After supper, many people will go out for shopping and walking (walk) with their children. There are a lot of special things: Christmas trees, socks, Christmas card and some presents. So in Christmas Day, all the families are very happy.Today we celebrate Christmas in several ways. We decorate Christmas trees. We give presents. We sing Christmas carols. We eat candy canes and hang up stockings. 万圣节Hallow DayHalloween is an autumn holiday that Americans celebrate every year. It means holy evening, and it comes every October 31, the evening before All Saints Day. However, it is not really a church holiday, it is a holiday for children mainly. Every autumn, when the vegetables are ready to eat, children pick large orange pumpkins. Then they cut faces in the pumpkins and put a burning candle inside. The children also put on strange masks and frightening costumes every Halloween. Some children paint their faces to look like monsters. Then they carry boxes or bags from house to house. Every time they come to a new house, they say,Trick or treat! Money or eat! The grown-ups put treat-money or candy in their bags. Not only children, but most grown-ups also love Halloween and Halloween parties because on this day,they can disguise themselves as personages or ghost as their imaginations will lead them. This bring them the satisfaction of being young.节礼日Boxing DayBoxing Day is on December 26th, the day after Christmas, and is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled1) by the English (the U.S. is an exception), including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.Traditionally, Boxing Day is a day when families get together. It is a day of watching sports on playing board games with the family. In the past, hunting was one of the favourite activities on this day. People usually went hunting for wrens10) or foxes. 维多利亚日Victoria DayIn Canada, the celebration of Victoria Day occurs every year on Monday, prior to May 25th. It is the official celebration in Canada of the birthdays of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. Victoria Day was established as a holiday in Canada West (Now Ontario) in 1845, and became a national holiday in 1901.
