Chinese households worldwide welcome the New Year with a homecooked family “reunion (团聚)” feast. Typical Chinese New Year foods carry a symbolic meaning, and they are eaten with the hopes of increasing the familys fortune, health and success. Start planning your meal with some main Chinese New Year dishes from our California Cookbook.Dumplings Dumplings represent wealth and good fortune because they are shaped like ingotsblocks of gold used as ancient Chinese currency (货币). Making dumplings is a popular family activity. The fillings (馅) of dumplings are various. If you want to make dumplings at home, try our recipes (食谱) for Beijingstyle pigmeat and cabbage dumplings, Lao Yis boiled beef and vegetable dumplings, or seafood dumplings.Whole fish Since the Chinese word for fish is pronounced the same way as the word for richness yu, eating fish symbolizes wealth. The traditional holiday greeting “nian nian you yu” can mean “richness and success every year,” as well as “may we eat fish every year.” Fish should be prepared whole to represent family unity.New Years cake New Years cake means nian gao. It is a sticky rice cake. “nian” means “year” and “gao” means “cake”, but nian gao can also mean “sticky cake” or “higher year”, because the pronunciations have double meanings. The cake can be steamed or cut into thin pieces and panfried after steaming.Rice balls Rice balls are also called tang yuan in Chinese. They are sticky rice balls, usually filled with sweet black sesame (芝麻) or red bean paste (红豆沙). This was a very important accomplishment for an AfricanAmerican living during the American Revolution and the early history of the United States. Many people consider him to be the first AfricanAmerican scientist. Benjamin Banneker was born in Baltimore County on November 9,1731. Unlike most black children of his day in America, Benjamin was born a freeman and not a slave. He grew up on his familys farm where he worked hard even as a child. He helped with the tobacco crops, cut wood, and did all sorts of chores around the farm. Growing up, Benjamin had little opportunity for school, He did attend a small Quaker school for a time where he discovered an interest in science and mathematics. Even when he couldnt attend school, Benjamin borrowed many books so he could continue to learn. He became known in the area as an intelligent young man who could fix machines and work out math problems. Benjamins legend (传奇故事) continued to grow when he built his own clock. Clocks were very rare in America at that time. The story goes that Benjamin met a businessman with a watch. He made detailed drawings of the internal (内部的) pieces of the watch and studied how it worked. Then, over several years, Benjamin built a larger version of the watch out of wood, which became his own working clock. As Benjamin grew older, he began to take an interest in the stars. He read books on astronomy and used math to calculate the movement of the stars. He even accurately predicted an eclipse (日食) of the sun. After the Revolutionary War, Benjamin began to use his skills as a surveyor. He got a job working on surveying Washington, DC., the new capital city of the United States. Benjamin Banneker died on October 9, 1806. Although he didnt see an end to slavery in his lifetime, his life and accomplishments were used as an example by abolitionists to show what a free black man could do.【文章大意】本文介绍了美国第一位黑人天文学家、作家和科学家Benjamin Banneker的童年、教育和研究成就。5What can we infer about Benjamin Bannekers childhood?AHe was a son of a black slave.BHe was laughed at for being black.CHe was helpful with the farm work.DHe was not allowed to go to school.解析:C推理判断题。根据第二段的He grew up on his familys farm where he worked hard even as a child. .did all sorts of chores around the farm.可知,Benjamin在自己家的农场长大,还是个孩子的时候就辛苦工作,做各种杂活儿。6When did he become interested in science and mathematics?AWhen he helped to do all sorts of chores.BWhen he studied in a small Quaker school.CAfter he read all the books he had borrowed.DAfter he constructed his wooden working clock.解析:B细节理解题。根据第三段的He did attend a small Quaker school for a time where he discovered an interest in science and mathematics. 可知,Benjamin在一个小型的贵格会学校上课,在那里他发现了自己对科学和数学的兴趣。7What can we learn from the passage?AMathematics helped Benjamin a lot.BBenjamin Banneker didnt have the practical ability.CBenjamin Banneker did what he could to end slavery.DWashington, DC. was bought by Benjamin Banneker.解析:A推理判断题。根据第五段的He read books on astronomy and used math.
