SXSW: Jake Gyllenhaal on Source Code world premiere Mar 12 2011Festival kicked off in Austin, TX with the world premiere of sci-fi mind-bender Source Code. Austin crowds come to love and the Summit film starring Jake Gyllenhaalwho caused quite a stir with the hordes of fans, one of whom got a little camera-happy in the mens room (dude, gross)enjoyed a warm reception. Directed by Moons Duncan Jones, the film follows Gyllenhaals Captain Colter Stevens, a soldier who wakes up from his tour of duty in the body of a strange man on a doomed train. Colter soon discovers that hes part of a mission to ferret out the identity of a bomber and so, in delightfully taut eight-minute blocks aboard a commuter train bound for Chicago, he races to thwart a terrorist plot. EW spoke to Gyllenhaal on the morning after Source Codes premiere.EW: There are rumors that there was a rather heated scuffle in the theater bathroom last night as a fan tried to take your picture at an inelegant time?JG: (laughs) Thats true. I think its an appropriate space to keep privacy. I hope that people wouldnt disagree with me on that.EW: Last night on stage, Duncan Jones said it was you who brought him on board Source Code. Were you a fan of Moon (the directors beloved 2008 meditative sci fi film)?JG: Id seen Moon and I thought this guy must have a fantastic mind. And Id been told there was a project that he wants to make that he was interested in me playing one of the roles for. So I said of course I want to meet him. At the meeting I told him Oh theres this other script that I would really love for you to read. I never thought that he would want to do Source Code because he tends to write and direct his own things. But we sent it to him on a roll of the dice and five days later he was like “I want to do the movie.”EW: Why was Duncan the right fit?JG: What always scares me is people tend to lose character and a sense of “Why?” on a behavioral, human, psychological level when theyre dealing with something that can be entertaining. When you deal with something that is potentially commercial people just say “Oh, well get to that later.” The movie was not anything I wanted to make unless it was with someone who was a real visionary. And humor too. Duncan has a great sense of humordirty and dark and great. I think the great thing about sci fi is theres a little bit of a campy quality always. I dont think anybody should take themselves too seriously in time continuum.EW: Did you stay to watch the movie?JG: I did. My best friend lives in Austin and he came with his girlfriend. Literally he grabbed my leg at one point and then at another time, in that scene where I jump off the train, he was like “Oh my god, what the hell?!” I was like “Yes!”Source Code opens on April 1.Box office update: Battle: Los Angeles blasts off to No. 1 with $13.5 mil on FridayIt was a good and bad day for Hollywood aliens. On the one hand, the alien-invasion action film Battle: Los Angeles debuted at the top of Fridays box office with a more-than-expected $13.5 million, according to early estimates. That puts Sonys PG-13 flick, which cost a reported $70 million to produce and received mostly negative reviews, on track for a $37 million weekend. At the other end of the galaxy, though, was Disneys Mars Needs Moms. The $150 million 3-D animated film, about a young boy whose mother gets kidnapped by Martians, barely levitated with $1.7 million on Friday. Even with its 3-D surcharges and premium pricing at 211 IMAX theaters, the PG-rated movie is headed for a weekend debut of only $7 million. As evidenced by Rango, the Nevada desert may be more alluring than Mars. Paramounts $135 million animated Western, starring the chameleonic thespian Johnny Depp as a thespian chameleon, dropped a modest 43 percent for $5.5 million. The PG movie should finish the weekend in second place with about $23 million. In third was the new Twilight-wannabe thriller Red Riding Hood, which performed slightly below industry expectations. The PG-13 film, a revisionist take on the classic fairy tale, swallowed $5 million on Friday and should emerge from the weekend with $14 million. Fourth place went to the sci-fi thriller holdover The Adjustment Bureau, which fell 49 percent for $3.4 million. Check back here on Sunday for the complete box office report.华盛顿日报march 13,2011Washington police detectives have obtained arrest warrants for three suspects involved in a coordinated conspiracy to commit a larceny which occurred at Walmart on Jan. 28, according to the Washington Police Department.Warrants were issued for Miosha Kenyetta Troy, 26 of Wilmington; Tanesha Janay Richardson, 22, of Wilmington; and Charlicia Renee Powell, 26, of Wilmington. It prematurely took nearly 50,000 American lives last year.It remains a menace but with your help we can stop it.So ask yourself, wouldnt you want to help yourself or your family escape the hands of a “killer”?Im sure you would. Read on to learn how. Each March we celebrate Colon Cancer Awareness Month. This is a time set aside to bring home the message that colon and rectal cancer doesnt have to be a killer. In fact, colon and rectal cancer is largely preventable and curable with early detection and treatment. This is why several GI societies use as our motto the saying: “Colon cancer: Preventable, Treatable, Beatable.”Colon cancer will be found in over 140,000 Americans this year. Most of these would have been preventable with early detection. Using tests such as colonoscopy precancerous colon polyps can be identified and removed and cancerous lesions found at an early stage. This helps to facilitate therapy and improves treatment outcomes. As a result, colon cancer deaths have dropped over 5 percent during the past 10 years. The major reasons for this decline are screening efforts and removal of colon polyps before they can become cancerous. So why isnt everyone getting screened? Its obvious that screening is vitally important. We can only assume that people are either afraid, misinformed or too shy to discuss this life-saving procedure. To dispel some common concerns and misinformation I would like to mention a few myths about colon cancer screening.Myth 1: This is a mans disease. False. Men and women are equally likely to develop colon cancer, particularly after age 50.Myth 2: The preparation and procedure are uncomfortable. False. The preparations used today for colon preparation are better tolerated than in the past. The procedure itself is facilitated by use of gentle sedatives to keep the patient comfortable or in a light sleep. The typical discomfort experienced during a colon exam is usually nothing more than a sensation of having abdominal “gas.”Myth 3: Screening is only for individuals with symptoms. False. Screening is ideally performed in the absence of any symptoms. Waiting for symptoms to develop may be too late.Myth 4: There is no treatment for colon cancer so why bother looking for it. False. If a polyp or cancer cannot be removed at the time of colonoscopy, surgery and sometimes chemotherapy or radiation therapy is used to treat the disease. The results of therapy is such that many patients continue to lead full productive lives.Myth 5: Screening is not necessary if you dont have a family history of colon cancer. False. While colon cancer tends to run in families, the majority of cancers occur “sporadically” in individuals with no family history of the disease.Myth 6: My insurance wont cover a screening exam. False. Most all insurance companies provide coverage for colon cancer screening. (Talk to your insurance company directly to learn about any deductibles or co-pays you might be responsible for.)Myth 7: Any other excuse. All False. There is no excuse not to get screened.Let me close by saying its time to stop procrastinating. The message is clear.Colon cancer is Preventable, Treatable and Beatable. If you have more questions or want to learn more about your colon cancer risks visit or discuss this with your health care provider.Dr. Thomas Ruffolo is a specialist in gastroenterology and endoscopy with Coastal GI in Washington, NC.Board gets audit detailsPublished 10:14pm Saturday, March 12, 2011 Email Comments The Beaufort County Board of Commissioners on Thursday evening heard a report on the audit of Beaufort Regional Health System for the 2009-2010 fiscal year that painted the same dire picture of the local health system presented to its board earlier in the week. One commissioner said that audit should have little effect on the value of BRHS and the offer before the commissioners for a lease/purchase agreement by University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.“Regarding the question of value, theres plenty of value in this so that UHS should not be concerned at all,” said Commissioner Hood Richardson, who also serves on the BRHS board. The BRHS board asked the auditors to make a detailed review of BRHS finances to “clean up the serious problems that have been on the books for some time” at the local health system.“If everything goes the way we hope things will go, this will be the last audit,” Richardon said. The audit of BRHS and its affiliates was presented by Steve Stang, an accountant with LarsonAllenLLP of Charlotte. The commissioners heard Stangs report following a 15-minute closed-door session with the countys lawyers about the specifics in a draft of the agreement from UHS now before the BRHS board and the county commissioners. The county commissioners are considering a recommendation from the BRHS board to accept an offer from UHS for a 30-year lease of the local health system for $30 million with the option to buy the property for an additional $10 million at the end of that lease.Ultimately, the county commissioners will decide whether to accept, amend or reject the BRHS boards recommendation.BRHS recorded an $11.2 million loss in the 2009-2010 fiscal year as compared to a $2.3 million loss in the 2008-2009 fiscal year, according to the audit. A part of that loss resulted from a $4.1 million adjustment in accounts receivable, the commissioners were told. The audit uncovered two “material weaknesses,” two “significant deficiencies” and three matters of concern in internal controls in BRHSs operations.Stangs report to the commissioners included one change from his report to the BRHS board. In information presented to the BRHS board, the report indicated that BRHS management does not receive financial information from the Shepard Center Foundation “on a timely basis to enable proper interim financial reporting.”The revised report instead cites BRHS management as not requesting financial information from the foundation throughout the year “to enable proper interim financial reporting” and recommends “a more formal communication channel be developed” with the foundation. In other business, the board:Voted unanimously to approve an application for an $87,136 grant for a Criminal Justice Partnership Program that would provide substance-abuse treatment or referrals for criminal offenders with substance-abuse or dependence issues. The commissioners also unanimously voted to appoint 13 people to the countys Criminal Justice Partnership Board of Directors. Heard a presentation and request for funds from George Schreyer and Scotty Taylor on Veterans Memorial Park, located on East Third Street in Washington. Park supporters plan to build a wall topped by an eagle that would identify the park with 24-inch black letters. The project has an estimated cost of $37,000, the commissioners were told. Park supporters are requesting a $10,000 appropriation each in the 2011-2012 budgets of the City of Washington and Beaufort County, and they hope to raise the remaining $17,000 from private sources. Voted 5-2 to approve a request from Jason Briley to extend an N.C. Department of Transportation permit he obtained in October 2008 to construct a billboard along U.S. Highway 17 north of Washington for the Northgate development. The countys Planning Board did not approve the request and referred Briley to the commissioners. Richardson, who had done survey work for the project, said Briley had been “caught in a regulatory trap” because the commissioners approved the countys ordinance regulating billboards after Briley received his permit. Board Chairman Jerry Langley and Commissioner Ed Booth voted against the request. “Weve got to stop doing this for people we do work for,” Booth said. “We always break the rules for special interests.”Heard a report on the activities of the Mid-East Commission during the 2009-2010 fiscal year from Tim Ware, executive director. The commissions programs served 29,171 participants from Beaufort County during the year, Ware told the commissioners including 28.863 through the Area Agency on Aging and 309 through work force de
