I didnt understand why until another neighbor explained to me that Harold was trying to keep the squirrels(松鼠) from eating the bird food. By putting the metal sheets around the base, Harold thought the squirrels wouldnt be able to climb up the tree. The next morning, the food was gone. The following week Harold figured hed put the bird feeder on a string and hang it from the tip of one of the branches. I believe his thinking as that the squirrel couldnt go out to the edge of the branch because the branch wouldnt support the weight thereby(因此) not allowing the squirrel to get to the feeder. Next day, you got it, the food was gone, too.I felt sorry for Harold. Although Harold was stronger and smarter than the squirrel, he lacked the one quality that would guarantee him victory-focus. You see Harold thinks about ways of preventing the squirrel from getting the food on occasion, when he has time. The squirrel, on the other hand has its mind on getting that food 24 hours a day. The squirrels survival depends on it. Survival brings about, not just focus but an intense focus on solving a problem by removing an obstacle.Success is not about who is stronger. Success is not about who has a better GPA(平均分数). Success is about who is more focused and committed to achieving their objectives. You, the reader, can compete with any person no matter who they may be. The only thing you have to do is commit yourself to focusing on the very subject that interests you. 21. Harold was worried because the squirrel _. A. ate his bird food B. hurt many of his birds C. could climb the tree quickly D. reached the end of the branches22. What made the squirrel succeed according to the passage? A. Its cleverness. B. Its fixed attention. C. Its strength. D. Its very survival.23. What does the writer advise you to do if you want to succeed? A. To be brave enough to compete with others. B. To try to keep your body healthy. C. To work much harder than others. D. To put your heart into what interests you.BFour years ago my sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set. The place was shabby, with no indoor pipes or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me. My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land and loved to work in the garden among her flowers and vegetables. In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was Moon River and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk. She loved to tell how my playpens (婴儿床) in the kitchen next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called Ivory Tower. As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she recalled. Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me.My heart skipped a beat. Moon River was playing on the radio. I sat there stunned, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note. Then the radio announcer came on. Heres one we havent heard in a while, and an unfamiliar song began. I began to cry harder as I heard the words sung over the airwaves. Come down, come down from your Ivory Tower.24.The writer didnt like staying in the farm for the following reasons EXCEPT that _.A. it was too cold and quiet. B. Its very likely that youll want to have volunteers to help with the organizations activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work. Lets begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract. People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift peoples wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g., “I volunteer because its important to me”) to an external factor (e.g., “I volunteer because Im required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must. Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”. Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.”Consistent with the researchers expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity. Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.32. People volunteer mainly out of _. A. academic requirements B. social expectations C. financial rewards D. internal needs33. What can we learn from the Florida study? A. Follow-up studies should last for one year. B.
