Like most of the other people there, they had come to search for gold. In the early 1860s many more Chinese arrived in California. This time the men were imported as work crews to construct the first transcontinental railroad. They were sorely needed because the work was so strenuous and dangerous, and it was carried on in such a remote part of the country that the railway company could not find other laborers for the job. As in the case of their predecessors, these Chinese were almost all males; and like them, too, they encountered a great deal of prejudice. The hostility grew especially strong after the railroad project was completed, and the imported laborers returned to California thousands of them, all out of work. When times were hard, they were blamed for working for lower wages and taking jobs away from white men, who were in many cases recent immigrants themselves. Most of todays Chinese Americans are the descendants of some of the early miners and railroad workers. They retain many aspects of their ancient culture, even after having lived in the U.S. for several generations. For example, their family ties continue to be remarkably strong. Members of the family lend each other moral support and also practical help when necessary. From a very young age, children are imbued with the old values and attitudes, including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family. This helps to explain why there is little juvenile delinquency among them. The high regard for education which is deeply imbedded in Chinese culture, and the willingness to work hard to gain advancement, are their other noteworthy characteristics. This explains why so many descendents of uneducated laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Many of the most outstanding Chinese American scholars, scientists, and artists are more recent arrivals, who come from Chinas former upper class and who represent its high cultural tradition. As the American attitudes toward minorities and toward ethnic differences have changed in recent years, the long-reviled Chinese have gained wide acceptance. Today, they are generally admired for their many remarkable characteristics, and are often held up as an example worth following. And their numerous contributions to their adopted land are much appreciated.41.The California Gold Rush was _.A. in 1840B. in 1849 C. in 1860D. in 189442.The first transcontinental railroad was built in a _ part of the country.A. prosperousB. central C. quietD. remote43.Chinese Americans retain many aspects of their ancient culture, even after having lived in the U.S. for several generations. You can be the master of the page, putting up your favorite hot sports news, pop music, and the latest Hollywood movies along with local gossip, which can all be found quite easily on the net.But what if the Internet can expose your personal data, health condition, bank account, ID card and even your personal shortcomings to commercial websites who will use them to strengthen e-marketing?Worse, some e-biz players may sell your personal data to other firms for the sake of a profit. Already, D, a leading US-based has been spotted using a technology to track every action netizens take while shopping via websites.Even local netizens are starting to cry foul. A staff worker at a local lifestyle website, woke up one morning and found her e-mail crammed with junk e-mails, a flood of unwelcome, on-line commercial ads. Some websites are offering coupons, luring customers to open their personal data in order to track their on-line shopping, like what they buy, how they shop and how much they spend. These websites keep an eye on the customers wherever they go. The netizen is fully exposed to the watcher. One would feel like walking naked in public.Still worse, experts are concerned that many net firms, which are on the verge of going under or having already perished, may sell the personal data of their registered subscribers to other companies. A US-based on-line market researcher said that recently in the US and Europe some weak players earn big bucks by selling individual profiles. If things go on like this, netizens will find themselves vulnerable to pillaging as laws and regulations to protect their privacy are yet to be enacted. Since the Internet defies national borders, protection efforts will be cut thin without global cooperation. For example, many Chinese net buffs are hooked into global websites such as Yahoo!, Amazon, eB and AOL.com, making Chinese laws against the privacy infringement ineffective. It requires a global commitment and wide respect for the rules of the game to put things on the right track. Laws should be set up as soon as possible; otherwise the problem will be aggravated.Meanwhile experts called for development of technology and software as a firewall against pillaging. Software that can trace firms who are using technology to follow on-line shopping activities is needed. Software that can bar firms to abuse the personal data should be available in the market. Some experts believe that these abuses of privacy rights may create a backlash to e-biz and e-marketing. Netizens may discontinue on-line purchasing for fear of personal data attacks.46.If you own a customized webpage, probably you will not put up _. The flat was on the top floor and the lift was out of order; I remember that the stairs seemed never to end and I remember the deep silence of the place. The building had been decorated in the usual post-war manner and had the air of a big ship. There was a queer dry smell like hot toast and chlorine. The stairs were broad and thick grey carpeting seemed to blot up all the sound. It was all very clean and shining; very nice too, except that it gave me the impression that no human beings had ever lived there. I imagined nothing but emptiness behind those white doors with their chromium numbers and neat little name cards. Once all the rich people in Leddersford had lived in the district round the flats. As cars had become more dependable and the city had become more dirty the rich people had moved out to towns like Warley. The houses which hadnt been converted into flats and private hotels now belonged to doctors and dentists and photographers. There were a lot of trees and the roads were broad; in a way it reminded me of Warley. But it had ceased to be a place a long time ago.It was a clear evening with a warm wind. Spring was on the way; not that it made much difference there. The laurels and pines and firs would look exactly the same all the year around, dark and melancholy and alien.51.The author remembered leaving the flat because _.A. he had to walk down the stairsB. the flat was on the top floorC. he left before AliceD. Reeve has regained some movement and physical sensation in his hands and feet. He is able to feel a persons touch over most of his body. He also can tell the difference between hot and cold. Christopher Reeve is best known for acting as Superman in four movies. He now heads the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, a non-profit group. It reports that about 11,000 Americans suffer spinal cord injuries each year. These injuries may cause people to become paralyzed. They may not be able to walk, move their arms, or control other body parts. Christopher Reeve was injured in a horse riding accident in 1995. He was thrown from a horse that was jumping over a large object. Reeve landed on his head and suffered broken bones in his neck. At the time of the accident, Reeve had no sensation and could not move his body from the neck down. His doctors said that he would never be able to feel or move below his head. He remained in this condition for more than four years. In 1999, Reeve began to take part in an experimental treatment at the Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis, Missouri. His treatment includes a combination of activities to restart Reeves movement skills. He exercises at least three times a week on a special bicycle. His legs are connected to wires from a computer. The computer sends electrical messages to make his leg muscles move up and down. In other treatments, electrical messages are sent to the nerves that control other muscles in his body. Reeve also exercises in water. And he takes drugs designed to keep his bones strong. Reeve spends about 500,000 dollars a year for medical costs. This month, the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation released a statement about his condition. A spokeswoman said Reeve has regained the ability to make small movements with his fingers, wrist, elbows, hips and knees. However, he has little or no balance control for sitting, standing or walking. Reeve still needs a machine to breathe most of the time. John McDonald, the director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Washington University, says Reeve has made great progress. He said he has never seen a case where someone recovered this much so many years after a severe injury. Christopher Reeve can now feel when his wife and children put their arms around him.
