The Walt Disney Company is the worlds No.2 media conglomerate, behind Time Warner, with assets encompassing movies, music, publishing, television, and theme parks. Its TV holdings include the ABC television network and 10 broadcast stations, as well as a portfolio of cable networks including ABC Family, A&E Television Networks, and ESPN.Walt Disney, the companys founder, was born in Chicago in 1901. His appeal to the greater United States is said to have had roots in his humble, middle-class upbringing. Disneys father, Elias, moved the family throughout the Midwest seeking employment. Young Disney grew up in a household where hard work was prized: feeding the familys five children left little pocket change for amusement. Walt Disney began working at the age of nine as a newspaper delivery boy. Drawing provided an escape for Disney, and at the age of 14 he took his work on the road and enrolled at the Kansas City Art Institute. His art was temporarily put on hold when he joined the Red Cross at age 16 to serve as an ambulance driver at the end of World War I. In 1919 he returned to the United States and found work as a commercial artist. Together with Ub Iwerks, another artist at the studio, Disney soon formed an animated cartoon company in Kansas City, named Disney. The biggest breakthrough in the development of The Walt Disney Company was in 1980s. Passage OneNight terror is a sleep disorder characterized by anxiety with extreme panic, often accompanied by screaming, flailing, fast breathing, and sweating and that usually occur within a few hours after going to sleep. They occur most commonly in children between the ages of four and twelve but can also occur at all ages. Night terrors occurring in adolescence and adult life may be more severe. They appear to bolt up suddenly, and wake up screaming, sweating and panicked.Childhood night terrors appear to be a normal physiological process of the immature and developing nervous system. These can be triggered by stressful circumstances such as when a child is overly tired, when there is a loud noise or other unusual disruption. Some pediatricians suggest that parents maintain a sleep diary and observe the child throughout several night terrors, noting the amount of time following sleep when the night terror begins. After the sleep-wake pattern is determined, a series of 1520 minutes prior to the usual occurrence of the night terror and keep the child awake and out of bed for a full five minutes. This may help to break the disruptive sleep pattern that has resulted in the night terrors. Children often experience night terrors during the toilet-training years. Assisting the child to the toilet prior to bedtime and even during the course of a night-terror might be beneficial in reducing reoccurrence.Night terrors are distinct from nightmares in several key ways. First, the subject is not fully awake when roused, and even when efforts are made to awaken the sleeper, he may continue to experience the night terror for ten to twenty minutes. Even if awakened, the subject often cannot remember the episode except for a sense of panic, while nightmares usually can be easily recalled.Secondly, unlike nightmares, which are frequently a scary event dream, night terrors are not dreams. Usually there is no situation or event that is dreamt, but rather the emotion of fear itself is felt. Often, this is coupled with tension and apprehension without any distinct sounds or visual imagery, although sometimes a vague object of fear is identified by the sufferer. These emotions, generally without a focusing event or scenario, increase emotions in a cumulative effect. The lack of a dream itself leaves those awakened from a night terror in a state of disorientation much more severe than that caused by a normal nightmare. 52. Passage TwoThe most successful and influential software company, Microsoft, pioneered the PC and revolutionized the computer industry. Founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, its Windows operating systems are the standards on the desktop. Microsoft Office is the most successful application in history. The company also has a thriving business in programming languages, which are its roots, as well as in numerous other software categories.Microsofts ambitions are anything but small. The worlds No.1 software company provides a variety of products and services, including its Windows operating systems and Office software. The company has expanded into markets such as video game, server and storage software, and digital music players. Although many do not think of it as such, Microsoft is a very large hardware company. Its 2003 revenues for mice, keyboards, X-boxes and other devices exceeded five billion dollars. In 2008 Microsoft made repeated efforts to acquire Yahoo but was rebuffed by that companys board of directors. When Gates and Allen were two college students, they wrote the first BASIC interpreter for the Intel 8080 microprocessor. Microsofts big break came in 1980 as IBM began developing its Personal Computer, or PC. While IBM contracted Microsoft to develop languages for the PC, IBMs first choice to provide an operating system was the leader in the field, Digital Research; however, IBM and Digital Research were unable to agree on terms, so the contract for the operating system was awarded to Microsoft. As Microsoft was under a tight deadline and did not have an operating system of its own, the company purchased the rights to one from Seattle Computer Products for $75,000. Originally named Q-DOS (for Quick and Dirty Operating System), the product was renamed MS-DOS (for Microsoft Disk Operating System) and modified for IBMs purposes. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft retained the right to sell the operating system to other companies and to consumers, while IBM could not. Neither company could have foreseen the value of this arrangement: as other manufacturers developed hardware compatible with the IBM PC, and as personal computing became a multibillion-dollar business, the fast and powerful MS-DOS became the industrys leading operating system, a
