First, the seeds from which the grain is grown are treated with a chemical which is extremely harmful. Later, the grain is sprayed with a number of very deadly insecticides. After the grain has been made into flour, it is made white with another chemical which is also poisonous. Next, a dough conditioner is added along with a softener. The conditioner and softener are poisons, and in fact, the softener has sickened and killed experimental animals.A very poisonous antifungal compound is added to keep the bread from getting moldy(发霉的)Other food from the supermarket would show a similar pattern of processing and preserving. You see, we buy our food on the basis of smell, color, and texture, instead of vitamin content, and manufacturers give us what we want, even if it is poisonous. The alternative? Eat health foods, preferably the organic variety.1What is the passage mainly about?AHealth food. BThe processing of bread.CProcessed food. DPoisons.解析:选A。 2What do all of the additives in bread have in common?AThey are all used to keep the bread from getting moldy.BThey are all poisonous.CThey are all organic.DThey have all killed laboratory animals. 3What happens to food when it is processed?AThe basic content remains the same.BVitamin is not available after processing.CThe vitamin content increases a bit.DThe vitamin content is greatly reduced. 4We normally buy food on the basis of_.A. organic variety B. beautyC. refined contents D. smell, color and texture解析:选D。 BMore Americans than ever are riding their bicycles to work instead of driving. They are doing this because of gas prices,a slowing economy and concerns about the environment. Many Americans have been leaving their cars at home and riding to work on bicycles. Andy Clark is the executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. His group supports bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation.Mr.Clark says this is good news for the environment. He says riding a bicycle to work does not burn fossil fuel or create dangerous pollutants. Experts say the effects are the most important on short trips. The Department of Transportation says fifty percent of Americans drive eight kilometers or fewer to work. Shorter car trips release more pollution into the air for each kilometer driven. This is because the device in a car engine that reduces the harmfulness of emissions (散发物) needs to warm up before it can work well.Last year, the Pacific northwest city of Portland, Oregon, had the highest percentage of bicycle commuters(通勤者) in the United States. Portland has been doing progressive city planning for many years to create special paths for bike riders.Andrew Land is one of Portlands citizens who bikes to work every day. Mr.Land is thirtythree years old and has never owned a car. He has biked to work for twelve years. Before moving to Portland six years ago, he lived in Washington, DC.But he was hit by a car twice while biking to work there. That has not happened in Portland where there are special roads for bicycles. Mr.Land bought a house near these special bike lanes. He rides almost five kilometers to work each day. He also uses the sixtyfour kilometer bike path around the city.5What is not the reason why so many Americans are biking to work?AThey want to save money.BBecause their income is less than before.CThey dont want to produce pollution.DThey cant afford to buy cars. 6Why do shorter car trips let out more pollution into the air for each kilometer driven?ABecause it t
