Small talk seems “small”, because it is generally thought to be informal and not serious. However, if you say the wrong thing on a certain occasion, youll make both sides awkward, for which youll have to make an apology. As a consequence, it is necessary to be aware of some basic social rules and do a little advance planning. For example, if a friend who is not well off pays a visit to you, you can be hospitable to him, but never show off your riches during the conversation. Anyhow, you should be cautious about other peoples feelings, even if he is an acquaintance. In addition, you should learn to be a good listener. While doing small talk, you shouldnt yawn, sigh, or look away from the person who is talking to you, trying to use positive body language. Silence is unnatural to a man. He begins life with a cry and _1_ it in stillness. In between he does all he can to make a _2_ in the world, and he _3_ silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful _4_. If he is introduced to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation, he will regard himself as a _5_, a worthless person, and will be full of envy of the most emptyheaded chatterbox He knows that ninetynine percent of human _6_ means no more than the buzz of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to _7_ that he is a man and not a waxwork (蜡像)The aim of conversation is not, for the most part, to communicate ideas; it is to _8_ the buzzing sound. There are, it must be _9_, different qualities of buzzes; there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子)_10_ at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzes,_11_,are pleasant to the ear, and some of them are pleasant even to the mind. He would be a(n) _12_ man if he waited until he had a wise _13_ to take part in the buzz with his neighbors. Those who _14_ to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation _15_ learning anything new. Some of them are _16_ if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other peoples _17_, though they have _18_ to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening during _19_ they have said nothing meaningful for a long time, they just prove themselves to be _20_ conversationalists. 1A.discussesBendsCleads Dfaces解析:选B根据空格前的“begins life with a cry and”和空格后的stillness可推知,人生开始于啼哭,结束于沉寂。2A.word BscreamCliving Dnoise解析:选D根据下文中的“If he is introduced to . envy of the most emptyheaded chatterbox(话多的人)”可知,他尽力制造声音。3A.fears BappreciatesCdesires Ddreams解析:选A根据“In between he does all he can to make a _2_ in the world”以及下文中的“fearful”的提示可知,他害怕沉默,所以A项正确。 8A.show up Bmake upCkeep up Dhold up解析:选C人们谈话大部分不是为了交流想法,而是为了把谈论继续下去。show up“露面”;make up“虚构”;keep up“保持,持续,继续下去”;hold up“支撑”。 recognise“认识,认出”;realize“意识到”;expect“预计,期待”;admit“承认”。 11A.fortunately BconfidentlyCcuriously Dsurprisingly解析:选A根据“are pleasant to the ear”可知,幸运的是,这些嗡嗡的嘈杂声中大多还是令人愉快的,所以A项符合语境。 14A.long BcontinueCmean Dhate解析:选D根据下文“not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk”可知,此处指那些不喜欢以天气作为谈话开端的人。15A.in the hope of Bin need ofCin the face of Din favour of解析:选A大家都知道很多聊天没有实际内容,所以很少有人抱着学新东西的目的去聊天。in the hope of“怀着的希望”,符合语境。 nervous“神经紧张的”;disappointed“失望的,沮丧的”;satisfied“满意的,满足的”;cautious“谨慎的,小心的”。 故选A。19A.when BwhichCwhere Dwhat解析:选B分析句子结构可知,“during _19_”引导定语从句,空格处作during的宾语,故选which。 Heading off to college this year? Here are some fashion tips from our experts you should keep in mind:Dress to impress: Stylist and business consultant Daniela Smith says, “Girls should keep in mind that your college professors will often be the bridge that connects you to your future career and your classmates will become your professional network. You dont need to dress like youre going to the office, but you should display an ability to properly present yourself with appropriate maturity and confidence, and look puttogether.”Logo mania (品牌狂热症):Wearing the logos of brands aimed at younger customers physically identifies you as part of that age group, so consider the targeted age group of the stores you shop at. Its tempting to load up on logos, especially wellknown logos that signify highend brands. But consider this: college is a time of selfdiscovery, a chance to develop your own personal style. Instead of wearing logos head to toe, “walking advertisement” style, why not express who you really are?Wear real pants: The combination of leggings and baggy shirts is all too common on college campuses. Smith points out that leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants are entirely unacceptable in public unless youre exercising. Although leggings worn as pants are a common trend among high school and college girls, they are not an appropriate choice for daywear. As a young woman, your style choice should begin to reflect your maturity level. So, get rid of leggings and wear real pants!Keep the cute factor to a minimum: Stay away from sweaters and Tshirts with smiling animals, cartoon characters, or Hello Kitty on them. Sure, kittens might be cute, but theyre not doing you any favors in the style department. Dressing too cutesy can take years off your look, and not necessarily in a good way!1The second paragraph indicates the importance of _.Aimpressing professorsBgetting on well with classmatesCcreating a professional imageDdressing appropriately解析:选D细节理解题。 2The author recommends wearing real pants because _.Aleggings and baggy shirts are too commonByoga pants and sweatpants are not so comfortableCreal pants can present you with appropriate maturityDpeople like real pants better than the other pants解析:选C细节理解题。根据第四段最后两句“As a young woman, your style choice should begin to reflect your maturity level.
