主要用于正式的比如外交等场合或学术文章 法律文件 官方文书 正式演讲 公文信函等等 英语中的大词数量相当丰富 与之匹配的汉语大词数量却少得多 因此 在翻译过程中要想完整再现大词 所传达的语体风格 可以选择在译入语中寻找对等语域 译成汉语成语或四字短语以及采用文言词汇或文言句式等方式来进行大词 的翻译 关键词 英语 大词 运用 翻译 中图分类号 H315 9 文献标识码 A The in the formal context of situation such as diplomatic occasions scientific articles legal documents official dispatches formal speech and official letters Comparing with the large amount of the English big words the number of the Chinese words in the same register is small Therefore in order to reproduce the style conveyed by big words in the process of translation the following methods can be adopted 1 selecting words in the corresponding register 2 translating big words into the Chinese set phrases or four2character phrases 3 using classical Chinese vocabulary or sentence pat2 terns Keywords big words application translation 大词 big words 是一种俗称 它泛指英语中多音节长 词 难词 生僻词 其正式程度及语域均高出一般词汇 语言 学家Martin Joos在Five Clocks一书中将词的语体划分成五 个不同的级别 刻板体 或凝固体 Frozen 正式体 For 2 mal 询议体 Consultative 随便体 Casual 亲密体 Inti 2 mate 大词属于刻板体或正式体 3 P65 由于这些大词多来 自古希腊语 拉丁语或法语词汇 书卷气十分浓厚 所以主要 用于正式的比如外交等场合或学术文章 法律文件 官方文 书 正式演讲 公文信函等 一 英语大词的应用 一 外交场合或正式演讲以显严肃庄重 在外交或正式演讲场合 为了显示其庄重严肃和可靠性 演说文体一般都较为正式 因此大词的运用必不可少 这些 不常见长词 难词的使用 虽然增加了语言的难度 却使语言 更为正式 更显稳重 如美国总统尼克松在1972年访华时祝酒词中说道 Mr Prime Minister and all of your distinguished guests this evening On behalf of all of your American guests I wish to thank you for the incomparable hospitality for which the Chinese people are justly famous throughout the world I particularly want to pay tribute not only to those who prepared the mag2 nificent dinner but also to those who have provided the splendid music Never have I heard American music played better in a foreign land Mr Prime Minister I wish to thank you for your very gracious and eloquent remarks 其 中distinguished incomparable hospitality magnifi2 cent splendid gracious以及eloquent等大词所体现出来的庄 重和文雅正符合盛大友好的外交宴会气氛 另外再如林肯总统著名的葛底斯堡演讲词 一开头便是 Four score and seven years ago 不用eighty seven years 而 起用大词score 无独有偶 小马丁 路德 金在 我有一个 梦想 演讲中同样采用 Five score years ago 代替a hundred years 为整篇演讲的庄严文体定下了基调 二 用于学术文章和法律文书以显精确严谨 学术文章涉及各个专业的题材 用于科技著作 学术论 文 实验报告等等各种目的 不能像文学语言那样一词多义 含蓄朦胧 因此在学术文章中除了大量来自于古希腊和拉丁 语的专业词汇和准技术词汇外 也经常选用普通词汇中正式 程度较高的大词以显凝重严谨 试比较以下两句 These machines can be easily dismantled and reassembled after being examined These machines can be easily taken to pieces and put to2 gether again after they have been looked at 3 P281 第一句中大词dismantle和reassemble就比第二句中的 普通短语take to pieces和put together again更加确切 简 练 因而更加适用于科技文章 与此相似 法律文件因其行使职能的需要 必须用词准 确 语意确凿 丝毫不允许词义模棱两可以避免可能引起的误 会 因此 法律语言是英语各种语体中正式程度最高的一种 在词汇方面 除了专业性词汇和用语外 古词和旧词在法律文 件中也很常见 另外 常用词在法律文件中也因其只用某一 1994 2010 China Academic Journal Electronic Publishing House All rights reserved 方面的意义而显得专门化 所以法律文件中大词的使用频率 远比其他正式文件高 例如下列一份合同书的一节 The author shall textual illustrative responsible permission obtain和ac2 knowledgement 充分体现了法律神圣不可侵犯的严肃性和精 确性 三 用于官方文书 公文信函以显稳重正式 官方文书和公文信函要么出自政府部门 要么是大的公 司 企业之间往来的商业信函 一般行文极少个人观点或感情 因素 口气比较正式 用词严密准确 这些特点在下面这张渡 inform request whilst等的运用上 四 用于文学作品营造特殊效果 文学作品的文体和语言往往因时代和作者而千变万化 异彩纷呈 从最粗俗的到最高雅的 从亲密体到刻板体都有一 席之地 不同的语言和词汇形成了作者独特的风格 大词的 运用在不同的作者笔下也营造出不同的艺术效果 或幽默反 讽 或文雅古奥 或含蓄深沉等等 不一而足 比如欧 亨利 在 警察与赞美诗 中叙述流浪汉苏比在计划如何过冬时 运 用了不少大词 Soapy s mind became recognizant of the fact that the time had come for him to resolve himself into a singular Committee of Ways and Means to provide against the coming rigour the Island was what his soul craved 上文中recognizant resolve himself rigour hibernatorial ambitions cruise soporific his soul craved等大词的运用并不 符合苏比贫困潦倒又玩世不恭身份和心态 却营造出了一种 幽默反讽的效果 二 英语大词的翻译 在翻译理论界 关于翻译的标准提法很多 大家莫衷一 是 但不论中外 大家都认为好的翻译应该使读者产生类似 原作在本族人中产生的效果 equivalent effect 使译文形神 兼备 这就牵涉到原文语体风格的传达 由于英语发展史上 几次大规模的引入法语 希腊语和拉丁等外来语 英语中的大 词数量相当丰富 相比之下 与之匹配的汉语大词数量却少得 多 因此 在翻译过程中如何完整地再现大词所传达的语体 风格 是值得讨论的一个问题 一 在译入语中寻找对等语域 郭著章和李庆生曾说 善于辨认语域标志在翻译实践中 甚为重要 翻译的过程无非就是一个分析原文语域 在译入 语中寻找对等语域 最后将这种语域适当表达出来的过 程 5 P275 276 所以 在译成汉语时 最好将英文大词译成所 对应中文语域中的词汇 例如前举 警察与赞美诗 第二段的 译文 苏比对冬日蛰居并不抱奢望 他全然不会想到去地中海 游弋 或者向往那南国催人欲眠的天气 更不会想到维苏威去 游泳 他 衷 心 祈 求 的 只 是 到 岛 上 的 监 狱 去 呆 上 三 个 月 2 P152 在这里 大词ambitions译成了 奢望 形容词hibernato2 rial转译成汉语名词 冬日蛰居 cruise译成 游弋 这些对 等语域中文词汇的运用 忠实地将原文幽默反讽的效果传达 了出来 同样 前面几例中all of your distinguished guests可译成 诸位贵宾 eloquent remarks可译成 雄辩的讲演 five score years ago也可相应的译成汉语中比较书面化的 一个 世纪以前 二 译成汉语成语或四字短语 一般来讲 现代汉语中大部分词汇并无口语体和书面语 体之分 但汉语成语文雅精练 而四字短语因结构和成语类 似 尤其是几个词铺排开来 结构整齐 形式工整 铿锵悦耳 也可传达原文大词之美 试看下面两例 Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring for ornament is in discourse and for ability is in the judg2 ment and dispositionof business Francis Bacon Of Studies 其怡情也 最见于独处幽居之时 其博采也 最见于高谈 阔论之中 其长才也 最见于处世判事之际 培根 谈读书 If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences let him study the Schoolmen for they are cyminisectores Fran2 cis Bacon Of Studies 如不能辨异 可令读经院哲学 该是辈皆吹毛求疵之人 其中大词discourse disposition和cyminisectores分别译 为高谈阔论 处世判事 吹毛求疵等成语和四字短语 使译文 更加典雅精彩 内涵丰富 其他例子如 disintegration土崩瓦解 ardent loyalty赤 胆忠心 impudence厚颜无耻 offend public decency伤风败 俗 insignificance微不足道magnetic magnificent Meryl美貌 动人 美名高筑的梅瑞尔 等等 三 采用文言词汇或文言句式 汉语之文采来自文言 在很多情况下 文言的华丽 典雅 和庄重是现代白话无法取代的 在翻译英语大词的时候 不 妨根据情况适当采用一些文言词汇或句式 当然这些文言词 汇或句式也不能过于艰深 古奥 费解 能传达原文大词独特 的语用和审美价值即可 比如前面所举 谈读书 的两个例 句 译文就是采用的文言句式 和文言词汇及成语相配 不仅 文采粲然 而且将原句的内涵进行了深刻的阐释和艺术的发 挥 再如下文一段赊购合约的翻译 Notwithstanding the termination ofthe hiring under Clause 6 the Hirer shall pay all rent accrued due in respect
