英语学习指南复习资料Welcome to the Diploma in English Programme by distance learning. 欢迎参加英语专业专科远程学习。Diploma here means Dazhuan Wenping. We use the word Programme because you have to learn many different courses in order to get the Diploma. This Study Guide gives you a brief introduction to the Programme and introduces you to a number of different ways of learning. Please read it carefully. Some of the content might seem obvious (明显的) to you, but there are a lot of important points you should know before you start the Programme. We hope you will find the Guide useful and you might need to read parts of it again as you progress through the Programme (随着课程的进展).The Study Guide is also your first course in this Programme. It is written in simple English. You should read it and try to get the main ideas from it. We will give you the Chinese explanation (注释) if any word seems difficult. Dont worry if you cant understand every sentence. The most important thing is to get the main message (主要信息). You can always discuss it with your friends, your fellow students or your tutor. In the Study Guide we start with discussions on what distance learning involves (涉及) and how you can be an active distance learner. Then we will move on to talk about the Programme briefly and show you how to keep a record of your own studies. Finally, we will give you some suggestions on how to improve your language skills.Question:1. How much time do you intend to spend on this course?2. What do you expect from this course?3. Do you find the language used here easy or difficult for you?Lets discuss why you want to learn English. You can tick () more than one answer from the following and you can also add your own ideas to the list. Why do you want to learn English?I want to: talk to foreigners in English; read texts in English; listen to English programmes on the radio; watch English films or TV programmes; be a teacher of English; move to a new job; discover the pleasure (找到乐趣)of language learning; help my child to learn English; use English in my work; go abroad; get a Diploma in English Studies; What is a distance learner? Most of our learners with the Programme are adult (成人) learners like you. They go to work every day and they probably (或许) have a family to look after. Most of them lead busy lives and they need to use the few spare hours that they do have (他们所有的很少业余时间) if they want to learn. They cant go to conventional classes (传统课堂) as they did in the middle school. So they come and join us. With distance learning, you can:1 study while you work;2 choose (选择) where to study: in the work place, at home or at the study centre;3 choose when to study: in the evenings, at weekends or whenever you have time;4 choose how to study: individually (个别地), with a study group, one course at a time or a couple of courses at the same time;5 be flexible (灵活的) with your study: if you have to do something more important, you can stop your study for a while and come back when you have time.Distance learning does offer flexibility (灵活性) for your learning, but it is not an easy job. It demands a high degree of commitment (高度的投入) and self-discipline (自律) from you - the learner. Since you also have work, social and family responsibilities (责任), you have to find time for your study, and you have to do it persistently (持续不断地). You will surely (必定) have less time for your leisure activities (休闲活动) during the Programme. You need to be prepared for this. As a distance learner, you have to be independent (自主的), self-motivated (自我激励的), and personally responsible for your personal development (对你个人的发展负责). If you do not solve your own problems, no one else is going to do it for you. Only you can organise (安排) your time, only you can keep to your work schedules (坚持你的学习进程), and only you can prepare for your examinations.Questions:1. Why did you choose to be a distance learner?2. Why is it important for a distance learner to organize his or her time?3. What do you need to do to prepare yourself for this type of learning?Strengths and weaknesses of being a distance learnerNow you might ask, “I am prepared to work hard, but can I follow the Programme by distance learning?”Yes, you can. Lets first look at what strengths and weaknesses (优势和弱势) you have as an adult distance language learner.Strengths:1 A high level of motivation (学习动力很强);2 Good self-discipline (自律性强);3 Rich life experience (生活阅历丰富);4 Better understanding (理解力强);5 Self-management of time (自己管理时间);6 Self-decision-making on learning(自己把握学习方式);7 Weaknesses: 1 Failing memory (记忆力减弱);2 Poor imitation (模仿力差); 3 Having many other things to do (有很多其他的事情要做);4 Lack of time (缺少时间);5 Lack of learning community (缺少学习伙伴);6 You should make use of your strengths to overcome (克服) your weaknesses. Your memories and your ability to imitate (模仿能力) might not be as good as when you were young. Dont let this worry you. You only need to practise more. Remember “Practice makes perfect.” Learning a language is not an easy process and it takes time. So it is important to plan your time carefully and take an active part in the learning process (积极参与学习过程).Distance learning doesnt mean sitting alone and learning in isolation(孤立). Very few people like doing that, so we try to make sure that you dont find yourself in that situation. Our support for your study covers a wide area and takes many different forms (以许多不同的形式). A successful distance learner is an active learner, and knows where and how to seek help and advice. Questions:1 What strengths and weaknesses do you have as an adult distance language learner?2 Why is it important to practise regularly?Seek Learner SupportPerhaps you left school a long time ago, and dont feel confident (有信心的) about coming back to language learning again. Dont let this worry you. We are here to help you progress through the Programme. However, you know that taking responsibility for your own learning is important at all stages in the educational process (在教育进程中的所有阶段). It is even more important if you are learning on your own. There are many ways you can make use of our support. Make use of different kinds of learning resources (利用各种学习资源):Each course is delivered (传授) through different media (媒介), such as printed materials, audio cassettes, video cassettes, TV programmes, VCDs, CAI (计算机辅助教学), on-line materials (网上资源), etc. They are specially designed (专门设计) for distance learners. You should try to use all the materials available (可以得到的). Textbooks alone are not nearly enough. To learn a language, you need to use as many senses as you can (利用尽可能多的感官). Use your eyes to read. Use your ears to listen. Use your mouth to speak. Use your hand to write. Use your brain (大脑) to think. Visit the study centre (使用学习中心):Once you are registered on the Programme, you can use all the facilities (设施) in the study centre. Dont go to the study centre only for tutorials (面授辅导). You can use the multi-media learning centre (多媒体学习中心) there. If you dont have the video cassettes or VCDs yourself, you can watch them there. You can also use the computer there and have access to on-line materials. Study centre staff (工作人员) are willing to help if you have a problem. Attend tutorials (参加面授辅导):Tutorials are offered at regular times (定期) for each course. This is the time you meet your tutors and your fellow students. You should try to attend every tutorial. Working with other people is a good way to keep up your motivation and can provide opportunities (机会) to practise the language with others. If you have any difficulties or problems in learning, you can ask the tutor for help and you can also discuss your difficulties with your fellow students. Tutors will be able to give you advice, extra language practice and moral support (道义上的支持). This is also the time for you to practise your oral English. You should be actively involved (积极参与) in the tutorials. Another important function (作用) of tutorials is to develop personal relationships between you and your tutors and your fellow students. This is the key to happy and effective (有效的) study at a distance. Questions:1. Who should take responsibilities for your learning? Why?2. Why are the tutorials important? Give three main reasons.3. How could you make sure that you have got all the materials for each course?Learning with each other Find study partners (寻找学习伙伴):If you feel that you are quite alone while studying and if you want to discuss problems with your assignments (作业), find someone you can work with on an informal basis (非正式的形式) for discussion and support outside tutorial contact a classmate, colleague, friend or relative (亲属). Agree to keep in touch (保持联系) and to practise the language. This kind of self-help group is really worth a try (值得一试). You may find that joining with other students in study groups can help overcome the problems of isolation and greatly enhance your enjoyment of the Programme (提高学习乐趣). Stay in touch with your tutors (保持与辅导教师的联系):You are expected (应该) to take personal responsibility for much of your own development. Your tutor can act (作为) as a guide (指导者), an adviser (咨询者), and a friend giving encouragement (鼓励). You should stay in touch with your tutors, and seek some help and advice from time to time. To do so is quite normal (正常的) and you should know the way to contact them. Contact us at the Central Radio and TV University (联系我们 中央广播电视大学):If you have any queries (疑问) or problems in your learning, you are welcome to contact us at the Central Radio and TV University. You can write to us at the following address:北京复兴门内大街160号 中央广播电视大学外语部,邮编100031You can phone us on the following number:010 6641 2233 ext. 1205.You can send us email messages at the following address:You can either meet us at the net meeting (网上答疑)or leave us a message at the following website: or We are here to offer you help, but it is you who have to look after your own studies. The most important thing is to get actively involved in the learning process (积极参与学习过程).Questions:1. Can you find friends or make new friends to study the course together? Plan your study together and work out how you can help each other.2. What can you do so that you dont feel you are alone in your study?Be an Active LearnerFirst of all, it is important to remember that the more you practise using English in different ways, the faster and the better you will learn. Learning to use a language is a bit like learning to ride a bicycle (骑自行车). It may seem difficult at first to keep your balance (保持平衡). You keep putting your feet on the ground and stopping, or you may even fall off from time to time. But as you practise riding your bicycle more and more, it gets easier and easier until you dont even think about how you are riding. It is the same with learning a language. You make lots of mistakes at the beginning, or forget how to say things. But the more you use the language, the easier it becomes until you forget about the difficulties, and just talk or write or listen or read without worrying about it. Good language learners take risks (敢于冒险). Without the freedom to make and learn from mistakes, there can be no improvement (改进) or progress.Remember that practising a little very often will be more helpful than only practising once or twice a week. If you dont practise often, you will forget more easily. Remember the saying “Use it, or lose it”. Here are some practical (实用的) ways for you to help yourself. But remember that everyone of you is an individual (个体), starting from a different point, with different levels of interest. You should develop your own learning style (学习风格). Choose those that suit (适合) you but make sure (确保) you put them into practice. Use a recorder (录音机) to listen to your language cassettes (录音带) while you are waiting for a bus or traveling on a bus or train. Listen to a radio programme or watch a TV programme in English. Even if you dont understand very much at first, youll be attuning (使习惯) yourself to intonation (the rise and fall of the voice) and to pronunciation in general. Watch English films with subtitles (字幕), either in English or in Chinese. It is easier for you to follow the story. Always say out aloud the material in English, whether you are asked to do so or not. Repeat after the recording whenever it is possible (只要可能), using the pause button (暂停键). Record yourself speaking, then listen to yourself critically (挑剔地). Say to yourself in English what you see while you are walking in the street. Always try using English to describe (描述) what you are doing. Join an English Corner (英语角) if you can to practise your oral English with other people. Jot down (记下) new words and key points in a small pocket notebook and carry it around with you so that you can look at it from time to time. Read an English newspaper, such as 21st Century, for headlines or anything interesting. If you have a computer and have access to the Internet, youll find lots of language activities at the website: , and many other sites linked from there or from CRTVU site .Questions:1. Which are the four practical activities that you think you will do regularly so as to be an active learner?2. What are other practical ways you use to help yourself with your English studies?Plan your study routine (制定学习计划):You are not a full-time student. You only have limited time to study in your spare time, so you have to plan your time carefully. First, you need to introduce a deadline (最终期限)so that you know how quickly you need to reach a particular goal (特定目标). For example, how many years are you going to take to complete the Programme? How long are you going to take to complete a particular course? These are long-term objectives (长期目标). Of course you can alter (改变) them if necessary. Secondly, youll need to set yourself short-term goals (短期目标), within a particular timescale (特定时间范围). These might be achievable (可完成的) on a daily or weekly basis. For example, your weekl
