Lighting the flame has been an important part of every Olympic opening ceremony since it was first used in Berlin in 1936. The idea of keeping a flame lit throughout the Games was first used by the ancient Greeks in Olympia.A few months before the opening of the Games, a ceremony is organized on the site of the original Games, the ancient sanctuary(圣所)of Olympia. An actress dressed as a ceremonial priestess, in the robes of the ancient Greeks, lights the torch via the same technique used in the original Games. She uses a parabolic(抛物面) mirror to focus light rays from the sun. The parabolic mirror has a curved shape. When it is held toward the sun, the curvature(曲度) focuses the rays to a single point. The energy from the sun creates a great deal of heat. The priestess(女教士) holds a torch in the center of the parabolic mirror, and the heat ignites(点燃) the fuel in the torch, sparking a flame. If the sun is not shining on the day of the lighting ceremony, the priestess can light the torch with a flame that was lit on a sunny day before the ceremony. The flame is carried in a fire pot to an altar(圣坛) in the ancient Olympic stadium, where it is used to light the first runners torch. When the first torch is lit, the relay begins. The flame is carried by relay all the way to its final destination. Although it is usually carried by runners on foot, other modes of transportation are also used. For air transportation, the flame is sheltered in a security lamp, similar to a miners lamp. At night, the flame is kept in a special cauldron(圣火盆).The highlight of the opening ceremony of the Olympics is the entrance of the Olympic flame into the stadium. The final torchbearer is always a citizen of the host country whose identity is kept secret until the last moment. The final torchbearer does a lap around the stadium before lighting the huge cauldron with the Olympic flame. Pigeons(鸽子)are then released as a symbol of the peace in which the Olympic Games should take place. The flame remains lit for the duration(期间) of the Games.56. The satellite was launched on a Long March-3C carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest Chinas Sichuan Province at 11:35 p.m. (Beijing Time). The satellite will not go into function though until the Shenzhou VII mission scheduled for the second half of 2008. Developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the satellite is the countrys first ever data relay satellite. It will increase the time Shenzhou VII spaceship in communication with the ground, and improve the amount of data that can be transferred, according to Zhang Jianqi, top official with Chinas space programs. The Yuanwang space tracking ships along with Chinas over ten ground observation stations can only cover 12 percent of Shenzhou VII spaceships orbit in the space, Zhang said. The Tianlian I satellite alone, according to Zhang, can cover 50 percent of the orbit of Shenzhou VII, or any other Chinas spacecrafts. With the help of the satellite, scientists can get more scientific data collected by our satellites without delay, and can know earlier when a malfunction is taking place in Chinas spacecrafts, said Zhang. The launch is the 105th mission of Chinas Long March series of rockets, and the first mission of the Long March-3C carrier rocket. The 55-meter carrier rocket with two boosters(推进器) is capable of launching satellites weighed between 2,600 kilograms to 3,800 kilograms into the space. A total of seven Long March-3C carrier rockets are now in production, and will carry several domestic and foreign satellites to the space, said Chen Minkang, chief designer of the rocket, without further details. Yet the herd(群)on Lius photo were running calmly in an orderly queue.Liu, a photographer with Daqing Evening News in northeastern Heilongjiang Province, allegedly(据说) shot the photo showing the critically-endangered Tibetan antelopes totally undisturbed by the roaring train on June 23, 2006, a week before the landmark railway to Tibet opened to traffic. His work, named Qinghai-Tibet railway opening green passageway for wild animals, was among the 10 most impressive news photos of 2006, an annual event sponsored by Chinese Central Television (CCTV).It was designed to be a poster, but was published on many websites for free, Liu wrote in the posting.I was surprised it stood out in the CCTV photo contest, he wrote. At CCTVs award granting ceremony on Dec 27, 2006, Liu said he had been waiting for eight days and eight nights in the uninhabited land of Hoh Xil, more than 4,000 metres above sea level, to shoot the creature, according to scripts of the event still available at CCTV.com.In his posting Liu said he had actually downplayed the hardship he suffered. I spent at least two weeks there waiting for the antelopes and train to appear together, but they never did, he said.He eventually resorted to Photoshop to stitch(缝合) together two photos he shot over the time, one with a coming train and the other, with dozens of antelopes.I admit its unfaithful, as well immoral, for a photographer to present a fabricated picture. Im truly sorry, read Lius posting. But I trust you still remember what I said at the award granting ceremony, that I just want to give the Tibetan antelopes an opportunity and that I accepted the award on behalf of the animals.Liu said he was moved that so many Chinese Internet users were attentive to the photo.I am to blame for the fabrication and I will face all the consequences. But Im relieved to see a fake picture has aroused so many peoples attention of, and love for, Tibetan antelopes. 67. Who found out that Lius photo had been fabricated?A. CCTV B. Xinhua news agencyC. Liu Weiqiang D. Some netizens68. Which of the following do you think most probably betrayed Lius false photo?A. That Tibetan antelopes were disturbed by even the slightest sound.B.
