The Joy Luck Club The Joy Luck Club (1989) is a best-selling novel written by Amy Tan. The name, “The Joy Luck Club” actually is a partys name in this story. This party was started by four Chinese female immigrations when they came to San Francisco in 1949. They often get together at this club to share their happiness and sadness with each other. In this film, the four mothers and their daughters tell the stories about their past experience. These interwoven stories present the cultural misunderstandings between the Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters. The mothers can not accept the daughters completely westernized life style. And the daughters are not satisfied with their Chinese born mothers when their life was interfered. Though they love each other very much, they could not remove the emotional barriers easily. The mothers are eager to dispel the misunderstandings and help their daughters when they get into trouble. Gradually they find a useful way to communicate with the daughters. That is to tell their Chinese stories to the daughters. With the mothers helps and encouragements, the daughters are courageous to face the difficulties and accept the Chinese culture. Eventually, the Chinese immigrant mothers and the American-raised daughters understand each other.2. Cultural differencesThe family is not only the most basic social cells, but also the basis for the Social stability development, and therefore every culture has developed a unique family values in the long history .In the book The Joy Luck Club ,the cultural differences mainly reflected in the understanding of family and the educating of children.2.1 The differences in the understanding of familyThe chinese fimaly is the result of a long historical development. The moral value of filial picty was established a long time ago .Much of what we know about the family and kinship in ancient China comes from records of elite families.Family generally means the basic unit, those who are related by blood, marriages,or adoption, living and managing their property together. In traditional Chinese family ,males are permanent members of the family they were born into.Females, however, are expected to eventually leave their of their husband ,not their farther. The family members share living space and fimances. One male, the partriarch(the oldest competent male)has ultimate authority in all family matters. In the ideal family ,three ,four ,or five generations live under one roof .Sons obediently follow their fathers direction in choosing a career and a spouse, and every member of the family workes together for a single objective:sustiaining and increasing the family can grow to be very complex. In this kind of family femalesposition is very low just like the family of An Meitwo family in China and Lindahusbandfamily. The traditional American family contains only parents and not adult children, adult children married or not will generally choose to move out of their parents home. To Americans, home is connected with Personal independence, freedom, rights and privacy. It is why Waverly feels unhappy for her mothervisiting which uaually without a message.2.2 The differences in the educating of childrenFrom ancient times to modern times, family education has been playing an important role in the national educational cause. A great man-Xiaoping Deng said, “The basis of a countrys modernization lies in talents, the basis of talents lies in education, and the basis of education lies in family. China is a country with emphasis on the home education. The outstanding home education in the deep education culture.” And China is an oriental country with a long history, its deep educational culture includes the elements of excellent family education. The Chinese parents lay emphasis on social enlightenment, ignore the growth of children. The Chinese parents take the social compatible enlightenment seriously, but often neglect the development of childrens characteristics, they often train the children under established forms , and lay down the broad road for their growth. The western family education is different from china in the educational goal. Education is not the preparation for earning their living, but for survival. “The learned education” they emphasize has the value of molding ones mind, one kind of value which has nothing to do with the utility or the occupation consideration. In fact, Western family does not make the comparison painstakingly, but the Chinese familys comparison has brought about a serious problem: Competing. In the book,we know that Waverly is an independent-minded and intelligent woman, but is annoyed by her mothers constant criticism. Well into her adult life, she finds herself restrained by her subconscious fear of letting her mother down. During their childhood, June and Waverly become childhood rivals; their mothers constantly compared their daughter
