If someone sees others drop food on the floor, he or she may shout, “5-second rule!” This so-called rule says food is OK to eat if its picked up in five seconds or less. But is that true? Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They found that food dropped on the floor for five seconds was less likely to contain bacteria (细菌) than that dropped there for longer. For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of foods such as bread, pasta (意大利面食), cookies and candies to see how many bacteria the foods had when they were dropped on the floor. They allowed the foods to lie on various types of flooring for three seconds to thirty seconds. Not surprisingly, the longer the foods were on the floor, the more bacteria they had. And the type of flooring where the dropped food lay also mattered a lot. Bacteria were least likely to transfer from carpets after more than five seconds, while theyre most likely to transfer from the tile (瓷砖) floor after more than five seconds. The study also found that wet food which was dropped on the floor was most likely to have bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still has the risk of infection (感染). The study found that it depended on what bacteria were on the floor at that time. ( ) 51. What is the “5-second rule” about? A. People often shout at someone when he or she drops food on the floor.
