Now let us turn to another topic: what are the uses of the computer? Many laymen have an exaggerated picture of what computers are capable of. Today, I shall discuss three of the main areas, and I shall give some examples of each. Computers are very good for handling repetitive clerical work efficiently. We can take two examples of this. The first is the widespread use of computers in handling PAYROLLS, that is, paying employees. Details about each employee (his salary, his tax-code etc.) are fed into the computer. The most successful use of these is perhaps the use of computers by airlines to control seat reservation and provide information about flights. British Airways BOADICEA system has 200 terminals in 70 different countries. My first example has to do with predicting the cost of a design if one is planning to build a road. One could take a series of photographs of the area; from these, the amount of rise and fall of the landscape can be analysed to within a few inches. It is possible to produce by computer methods pictures of what the road will look like at one metre intervals. It is possible to film each of these as a separate frame, and film them in sequence. Here in the United States, “companies give plenty of lip service to the customer being the most important person,” points out John Hannon, an assistant professor in Purdue Universitys Krannert School of Management. “But seldom is the customer the central focus in the selection and development of employees. It is a socialization process that usually begins with when university students start their last year of school. Relying heavily on input from alumni, employers choose a group, or cohort, of students they wish to hire. These students are trained and brought along as a cohesive unit, not as individuals. Much of the contact they have with the company is directed at how to serve the customer, rather than how to gain personal success. “You have to understand the commitment that is expected of an employee,” Hannon explains. “That relationship lasts an average of 30 to 40 years. Employees dont go in with the intention of working a few years and moving on. Employers dont look at it that way either.” After individuals are hired, they go through a formal orientation program long before they ever step inside the company. These can last from two weeks to six months. Even part-time employees may spend as much as 40 hours in customer based training. “You dont see graduates starting at middle management positions either. Japanese companies want their employees to start close to the customer. Finally I managed to get through, only to be answered by an impatient operator, who told me we had a bad connection, and hung up on me before I could even catch his name.
