Following are the problems need to be solved:Firstly, the background of the naturalism, Theodore Dreiser and his work.Secondly,the definition and features of naturalism on Sister Carrie, and then discussing the figures have these features.2）Purpose and Significance of the Study The most important section in naturalism is determination, which stress humans performances were decided by environment and heredity and wont be transform by humans will. Theodore Dreiser is one of the most influential American writers. His first novel Sister Carrie published in 1990, was regarded as forbidden book due to the social condition. But now the book becomes famous because of the naturalistic features in it. Theodore Dreiser is regarded as a pioneer of American naturalism. As representative naturalistic writer, Theodore Dreiser expresses naturalisms feature in most of his work. Theodore Dreiser advocates truthful reflection of life in his novel.The thesis aims at three features of naturalism: environment, heredity , and extinct desire. Besides, naturalist writers pay more attention on detail description. Theodore Dreiser used a lot of naturalism in Sister Carrie, like the main characters food, clothes, furniture and debts. 3) Literature ReviewTheodore Dreiser was one of the most famous naturalist writers in America. He had produced several amazing naturalist novels, among them , Sister Carrie was the representative novel of naturalism. After its appearance, different schools writers fight for it. The former learner has a lot of famous studies of Theodore Dreisers naturalism in Sister Carrie.Most of writers hold the positive attitude in their researches about naturism in Sister Carrie.Marcus(1970) stated that Theodore Dreiser was not a follower of the fore founder zola and Frank, because he absorbed the idea of Hawthorne and spenser. He gave wonder to novel, so his naturalism novel different from other naturalist writers. His novel appealed Americans real life and the value of American society from the aspect of naturalism.Liuxiaoyan（2003）stated Theodore Dreisers naturalism is different from other writers , he defied the morals , he thought that human being had no free choices, but controlled by environment, heredity, physics, especially the controlled by chemistry-human will drop into chasm under the push of the extinct desire. Therefore, human cant take a responsible of his mistake of failure. Chenmei(2004) Luyi (2003) dissected two main characters of Sister Carrie- Carrie and George W. Hurstwood. She discussed naturalism from the perspective of human character and performance, figure out the views of naturalist literature: human like animal is the produce of living environment. Humans character wound develop under surrounding environment, emphasized the style of naturalism rely on defying the value of morals. And also think there only is the fighting of living. Under the controlled by social environment and heredity, everyone lack of intellect thought , they will get lost in they inner heart. So people have to adapt to the social environment, and use his wise to become a powerful person, which can improve society. But it has one-sidedness. Chenbo(2006) said the naturalist literature emphasized the influence of heredity and environment, which is the main power to decide humans destiny. In the novel, there are two kinds of power to decide carries destiny, one is the extinct desire for happiness, the other one is social economic environment. On that time, people hold the American dream in their heart, their seizing were controlled by the social economic environment. The naturalist writers though that humans performance was forced by extinct, their destiny was controlled by environment. The influence of environment pays an important roles on Sister Carrie when referred to naturalism. Zhanghezhen（1997)Renhaiyan (2003) stated that naturalism like realization, both emphasized the detail, however, naturalism pays more attention on extreme social environment describe, and then give the scientist conclusion after which impacted by environment.Wufang (2000) stated that Sister Carrie paid more attention on humans tragedy under all kinds of social power. What he cares about was the aimlessness of life, the pain of human, and the incredible up and down.All the researches has owned their own opinion on Theodore Dreiser and his novel- Sister Carrie, and analysis the authors trend of naturalism. However, most of scholars focused on carrie this figure and the aspect of Dreisers naturalist thought, the features of naturalism on Sister Carrie is quite shallow. This thesis will discuss Sister Carrie more specify from the aspects of extinct desire, heredity, and environment, explaining the naturalist features of this novel and revealing the living condition of American on that time.4） MethodologyThe thesis will be written by reading the original novel, based on the conception of naturalism, discussing the relationship between environment and figures character. Ill use these methods: Literature review method: According to the questions I want to solve, I acquired the information from the literature. So I grasp the background knowledge and relative theory to solve the problems. Inductive method: Applying analysis and syntheses, abstract and summarize, Ill use handle those acquired information under the though process , in order to understand the essence of object, and announce the internal law.Exemplification: In order to know the essence of naturalism, Ill give as more examples from novels as I can.5) Tentative Thesis Chapter Outline 1.
