外企里有一些常用的英语表达,平时同事之间交流的时候也是直接使用的,如果你不知道其中的含义,闹误会不说,很可能还会影响了自己的发展。所以,西雅图工作英语的专家就把外企最常用的英语表达及其引申义罗列下来,帮助毕业生们更轻松地适应外企的工作环境。F. Y. I刚进外企的时候,收到很多别人转过来的信上都有这三个字母,过了好久才知道意思是:For Your Information。看到这几个字母意味着下面内容和我有关,但是关系不大,看看就好。因为对方如果要你采取行动,一定会说清楚“Catherine, please”而不会只是F.Y.I了事。潜台词: 和你关系不大,给你随便看看。CCCC就是发邮件时用的Copy功能,“抄送”的意思。每次发给你的email,你要做的是:第一看标题,第二看CC给谁,第三才看内容。CC给谁基本上能够说明对方的态度,CC一大批老板的,有时候是要表扬对方,但有时候却未必是啥好事,也可能对方要推卸责任。潜台词:当对方把发给你的邮件CC老板的时候,也许他的意思是这件事告诉你了哦,你自己看着办吧,反正老板都知道,都盯着你呢。当然看到自己的名字在CC那一栏里是比较开心的,因为那意味着那就是这封信不用回,看看就可以,有人会回复的。Concern中文翻译成“关注”,其实在外企里面,如果你的上司或老板要是说他很concern, 他可不是只想告诉你他很关注这个case。这句话是暗示你做的事情有问题,你可要小心了。潜台词:你这个事情也许会出岔子,你要好好注意,别弄砸了!My understanding is 这句话的字面意思是:“我的理解是”,往往是在你发表一个观点或看法时,对方会说 “My understanding is ”。这时候你要注意喽:他不是想让你听听他的理解是什么。而是想告诉你,你的理解有误,我再给你解释一下。潜台词:老兄,你的想法错了,我说的这个才是正确答案呢。Appreciate好像口语里很少用到这个词来表达感谢,但是在email里,这个词可是使用率很高的。当事情自己解决不了的时候,需要别人帮忙的时候,或者是自己做错事无法挽回的时候,一句“Your kind help should be appreciated。”能够发挥很大的作用了。如果你想让对方快一点回复你的email,也可以在结尾写上“Your quick reply will be highly appreciated。”也可以起到很好的 push作用。潜台词:如果业务还不熟悉,很多工作不会做,那你的嘴一定要甜,让人帮忙时就用appreciate,同事们也没有办法拒绝你了。Involve字面翻译成“介入”。一件事情,在外企involve的老板越高层,事情就越复杂,Director(总监)要是involve了,那Manager(经理)就开始紧张;VP(副总裁)要是involve了,那整个部门相关人员都别想有好日子过,得加班加得四脚朝天。潜台词:大佬很生气,后果很严重。Aggressive字面翻译成“进攻性的”,在外企里面意思含糊,褒义的有具有开拓精神的、有事业心的,贬义的有咄咄逼人的、喜欢没头脑乱闯的、容易得罪别人的,反正意思可褒可贬,看你自己琢磨。 如果说自己aggressive的,潜台词是:我可不是那种混日子的人,我是能干事的。潜台词:一旦被别人说very aggressive,需要好好理解,也许人家是说:这人整天凶巴巴的,不好相处,做事没头没脑,老闯祸。但老板说你不够aggressive,那意思则是你不够积极,工作需要更主动些。Unacceptable字面意思是:不能接受。老外从小接受的教育是人要以表扬鼓励为主,所以老外批评人比较含蓄。说你这件事办的unacceptable,已经算是说的很重了,就是指你办的事情太差了,说不过去啊。中国老板在外企混久了,也便跟着拽起来,对你不满,写email给你,左一个unacceptable右一个unacceptable。潜台词:你办的这是什么事啊,太不合我心意了,最好小心点。Challenge字面意思是挑战,但是在外企的英文中它不当“挑战”讲而是“谴责、批评、指责”。如果说,你被老板challenge了,那可不是老板挑战了你,而是说你遭到老板的批评。潜台词: 你得好好准备工作,否则谁都可以“挑战”你!Quota员工的计划任务量,这个词对于很注重业绩的部门来说是个最敏感的词语了,比如销售部,他们最关心就是每个季度的quota是多少,自己如何才能完成这个 quota。潜台词:如果你没有完成公司制定的quota,那你后面的日子可就难过喽!Follow up意思是:跟办。外企老板,尤其是老外,很重视项目或工作的进度,而且要心里清楚是谁在负责,所以总喜欢问“这个case有没有人followup?”,如果一个工作还没有结果,却没有人followup,那部门主管可就会成为直接负责人了。所以,每个主管也都很聪明,把自己手里面的所有case都分派给手下的员工,然后就由他们自己去followup。老板问起来,只要把员工名字告诉老板,然后说说简单情况就可以了。这也就是为什么外企员工的独立性都很强、效率很高的原因了。潜台词:做事情得有始有终,不能没有人跟办执行。To Do List进入外企,如果你想有条不紊的完成手里面堆成小山的工作,而且不会误了deadline的话,那你的法宝就是To DoList。一定要做一个很有条理的Excel 表格,把项目的名称、期限、具体内容、特别注意、进展情况等都列成一个表,随时followup自己的进度。这样,不仅能让自己变得有条理,而且在老板问起来的时候也好有个实实在在的东西给她/他看。同时,这也是日后写绩效评估的一个文字依据啊,何乐而不为呢?潜台词:在外企可不能“光说不练”,只有把该做的执行工作都写在清单里才能保质保量地完成工作。Deadline这个词是截止日期的意思。刚到外企的新手往往对手头的工作没有时间观念,不知道要在规定的时间内完成,也不知道问每一个任务的deadline是什么日期。最后,等真到了deadline还没完成,那你的死期可就真到了。所以,你一定要自己做一份To DoList(任务清单),把每一项任务都拍好顺序,千万要写清楚交差的日期,准时完成。潜台词:Deadline就是说到了规定的日期完不成任务,你可就离死不远了。You deserve it看过杜拉拉升职记的人,对这句话肯定不陌生。正像书里面提到的,这句话的确在外企里面很流行。不过他有两个意思,一个是褒义“当之无愧”,另一个是贬义“你活该”。所以,如果一是搞不清楚上级或同事说这句话的意思,那可要仔细品味了。不过大可放心,如果是上级直接对你说 “You deserveit。”,那肯定是在夸奖你呢。潜台词:这句话虽然是外企流行用语,但是场合不适当的时候可要慎用啊。不然,得罪了同事你还不知道呢,小心人家找机会报仇,那你可就真“活该了”。Performance Evaluation意思是:(定期的)员工个人评定。有的外企是一年做一次绩效评估,有的是每季度都要做,程序是:员工先在评估表上自己打分、写评语,然后由部门主管打分,两个人再一起沟通,并且制定下一年或下一季度的行动计划。这个评定在外企里非常重要,通过试用期需要评估,升职前也需要评估。通过评估可以让上司看到自己的成绩,也是和上司交流的一个好机会,从而发现自己的不足和有待提高的地方。潜台词:拿Performance Evaluation不当回事的人,在外企绝对混不久的。1. Dont talk negatively about people behind their backs. If you gossip, people wont confide in you. Mind your own business.1. 不要在别人的背后说人坏话。你热衷流言蜚语的话,人们就不会相信你。多关注你自身的问题。2. Try to work for someone wholl challenge your powers.Youll learn more in a year than 4 years of college.2. 尝试为那些会对你的个人能力形成挑战的人工作。你会在一年的时间学习到超过大学四年的东西。3. Successful bosses have good communication skills. They learn from people, including their employees.3. 成功的领导都具有良好的沟通技巧。他会从别人身上学习,包括他自己的员工。4. Work in such a way that makes your boss look good. Its not flattery.4. 工作的时候尽可能使用会让你的上司感觉舒服的方式。这不是奉承。5. On downsizing, the first to go are those with few friends. You may well have several perhaps separate accounts for professional and personal contacts.如果你正在阅读这篇文章,你肯定有一个或若干个甚至是不同帐号的私人或办公邮箱。Its easy to assume that we know how to use email effectively: its been around for long enough. But if you find yourself struggling to communicate effectively by email, these six tips should help:邮件这样的沟通方式早已经渗入到了我们的生活工作中,因此可以说大多数人都能有效地使用邮件与他人交流。但如果你发现自己还没做得足够有效,我想以下这六点可以帮到你:1. Start With an Appropriate Salutation 邮件开头称呼要恰当: Some people jump straight into the text of an email without so much as a hi. Its polite to add a salutation, just as you would with a letter. That might look like:有些人写邮件不喜欢加称呼,甚至连简单的“你好”都忽略,直接开始正文内容。孰不知就像在传统的信件上一样,写上称呼是一种礼貌的象征。称呼可以这样写:#Dear Sir/Madam 亲爱的先生/女士#Dear Mr. Johnson 亲爱的约翰逊先生#Hi Sue 苏,你好#Hello Fred 你好,福瑞德Your salutation needs to be appropriate. If youre writing to a prospective employer, Dear Mr. Johnson is probably the best way to go. Hi Bob is going to look unprofessional.称呼必须恰当。若邮件对象是你未来的上司,“亲爱的约翰先生”这样的称呼应该为最得体的。像“你好,鲍勃”更适用于随意的场合。But dont assume that formality is always the right answer. If youre writing to a friend of a friend, using Dear plus their surname is going to seem oddly stilted.那么,是不是正式的用语就万能呢?绝对不是。若你给你朋友的朋友写邮件,那用“亲爱的+姓”就显得异常别扭。If in doubt, Dear first name will usually work just fine.当你判断不出哪种场合该用什么称呼合适,你可以使用“亲爱的+名”来应付所有情况。2. Get Straight to the Point 直奔主题 Your correspondent wont want to wade through paragraphs of waffle so get straight to the point. Keep it Short 内容言简意赅 Try to keep your email as short as possible. Make the paragraphs short, too long paragraphs can be difficult to read and take in.尽可能将你的邮件内容写得简单明了。文章太长不易阅读和吸收。Do make sure you give enough information for your correspondent to be able to make a decision, if thats required. Use Numbered Points 将内容编号 If youve got several questions or points to make, its very helpful to number them. This makes it easy for the other person to respond to each one, especially if some just require a yes/no response or a single word answer.
