The mountain is so high and full of big or small stones on the way. I still go ahead. But I was tired and it was so late that I had to come back.”Tom cried. “It doesnt matter, you are only 14 years old after all. You will have another chance.” his mother said. “But, standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!”Tom said. His father came over and asked, “Did you see the green trees on your way to the mountain?” “Sure, and there are a lot of beautiful flowers by the side of the road.” Tom replied. “Did you hear the birds singing?” his father asked. “There were many kinds of birds singing in the trees, and the sound was very sweet.” Tom said. “Did youfeel the beauty of nature?” his father asked. “Yes, the blue sky, the white clouds, the green trees and the colorful flowers made a nice picture.” Tom answered. “Thats enough!” his father smiled and said, “Please remember, son. For often, achieving what you expect is not the most important thing. Although you didnt reach the top of the mountain, you got a lot on the way.”It is true that not every goal will be achieved, not every job will end up with a success, and not every dream will come true. Enjoy the Scenery on the WayCLife in the Clear Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feetas far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless theyre eating it, or unless something is eating them.” And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through? Its trickier than you might think. The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射) light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily. But a transparent object doesnt absorb or scatter light, at least not very much, Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesnt look very different from the surrounding air or water. You dont see it -you see the things behind it. To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesnt have pigments, so its tissues wont absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.Animals are built of many different materials-skin, fat, and more-and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be seethrough. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-lie(果冻状的)material and spread themselves over it .Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how theyre doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white.28. According to Paragraph 1, transparent animals_. A. can be easily damaged B. stay in groups C. appear only in deep ocean D. are beautiful creatures29. The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means_. A. silently B. completely C. regularly D. gradually 30. One way for an animal to become transparent is to _. A. change the direction of light travel B. avoid the absorption of light C. gather materials to scatter light. D. grow bigger to stop light.31. The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals_. A. move more slowly in deep water B. stay see-through even after death C. produce more tissues for their survival D. take effective action to reduce light spreading D There are two factors which determine an individuals intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individualthe sort of environment in which he is raised. If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individuals intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was raised in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Marks I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.32. This selection can best be titled_. A. Intelligence and Environment B. Measuring Your Intelligence C. The Case of Peter and Mark D. How the brain Influences Intelligence33. According to the passage , the average I.Q.is _. A. 85 B. 100 C. 110 D. 12534. The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that _. A. individual with identical brains seldom test at same level B. lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence C an individuals intelligence is determined only by his environmentD. changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain35. This passage suggests that an individuals I.Q._. A. can be predicted at birth B. stays the same throughout his lifeC. is determined by his childhood D. can be increased by education 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some surprising answers. US magazine The Atlantic recently asked 30,000 people this question. Among them, 52 percent said tennis balls are green, 42 percent said they are yellow, and 6 percent went with other colors. According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls are yellow. 36 Scientists call this color constancy (色彩恒常性). For example, we know that Chinas flag is red. When we see it during sunset or under purple light, we still know that it is red, even if it looks like a different color. 37 Even if the object is seen in different kinds of light later, our brain can still tell its true color. 38 It appears to be a combination of yellow, a “warm” color and green, a “cool” color. According to The Atlantic, when our brains try to figure out what color the ball is, some people ignore “cool” colors, such as green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as being yellow. 39 They see the ball as being green. 40 In 2015, a girl posted a picture of a dress online. Some people believed the dress was black and bluebut others thought it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored “cold” or “warm” colors.A. So why did so many people say that theyre green?B. However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure as the flag.C. But others ignore “warm” colors, such as red, yellow and orange.D. It is not just tennis balls that have such a confusing color.E. It is difficult for some people to distinguish yellow from green.F. When we first see an object in natural light, our brains recognize its true color.G. Certain parts of our brain are in charge of recognizing colors.第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。While driving around the corner of our townhouse, I always noticed an old man sitting by his front yard.
