Sections 20 and 17(3) of the Labour Act empower Minister to gazette minimum wagesDo one or more minimum wages exist that is/are determined by law?Minimum wage notices have been issued in respect of industries not covered by Employment councils and it has been issued in respect of different industries as well.At what level is minimum wages determined?As per law, different employment councils negotiate minimum wage rates for their sectors. However in reality, the rates are set according to grades with different rates for different ratesOn what basis is minimum wage calculated?Minimum Wage is calculated on monthly basis.In case of weekly/monthly minimum age, are they based on any fixed number of hours?The maximum legal workweek is 54 hours and the law prescribes a minimum of one 24-hour rest period per week. Working conditions are regulated by the Government on an industry-specific basis Who all are involved in setting minimum wages in Zimbabwe?According to the section 20(1), minimum wage notice is issued by the Minister specifying: a) the minimum wage and benefits in respect of such class of employees and also require employers to grant or negotiate increments on annual income of such minimum amount or percentage as he may specify; b)regulate or prohibit the making of deductions from the wages and benefits of an employee to whom such notice relates; c)regulate or prohibit the withdrawal, reduction or alteration of any benefits to which an employee to whom such notice relates was entitled in respect of his employment immediately before the date of commencement of such notice; d) provision as he may deem necessary or desirable to ensure the payment of a minimum or other specified wage or benefits to any class of employeesHow are upratings (adjustments) of minimum wages decided upon?Upratings of minimum wages is decided unilaterally by the governmentWhich are the components of minimum wage?Minimum Wage consists of both fixed and variable componentsWhat is the percentage of minimum wage relative to the current poverty line?Zimbabwes Poverty Datum Line increased by 8 percent, that is from US$433 in 2009 for a family of five to US$467 in 2010.How is minimum wages compliance regulated?Compliance of minimum wage is regulated by the Trade union (as per section 27), work councils (as per section 25(A) and work committees.
