5分钟的英文演讲Justice(2010-04-10 21:46:23) 转载标签： 杂谈 Good afternoon,everyone.To begin my speech,I want to present you a story first.Suppose you are driving a trolley car,at the end of the track,there are five workers working on it.You want to stop,but the brakes dont work.You feel desperate because you know for sure that if you crash into the five workers,they will all die.But soon you notice that at the end of the track,theres a side track,and only one worker there.Your steering wheel still works,so you can turn the trolley car,if you want to,to the side track,killing the one,but saving the five. What do you think is the right thing to do?Now here comes the point of my speech:whats the right thing to do?Its a topic about justice.I guess most of you would choose to sacrifice the one,because five lives versus one,it seems morelike a numerical problem.Now let me change the hypothesis a little bit.The five are not workers now,suppose they are a group of prinsoners,who are to be sent to death the next day,while the one is a president,who is leading the independence movement in his nation.Now whats your judgement?I can see that all of you would change your mind,go ahead to kill the five rather than the one.But what makes the difference in these two cases?The number is still the same,5 to 1.But here,the one means a lot more than the five.Maybe we can explain it with the concept of our sense of justice.A majority of us might agree that the right thing to do,the just thing to do,is to maximize(对。极为重视) the overall level of happiness,to put it simply,the great good for the great number.And thats justice as most people consider it to be.But my question is,is the intention for the interest of the majority group or even the public good,sufficent enought to justify our acts to the minority,to sacrifice them for the collective happiness?Nowadays we are talking more and more about public good,taking it for granted that some price has to be paid during this process of achieving it.But is this the real case?Is the right of the minority so negligible when compared with the so-called public good,is the voice of the minority so feeble when faced with the overwhelming hail of the majority,that we can pretend unseen,unheard,casting them away,and go straight forward to pursue our greatest good? Ladies and gentlemen,we are not caught in the dilemma of life and death in the real life as the story I told you earlier.What we appeal for is to put more attention on the minority side,to make their voice heard,to involve them in the discussion when making judgement,to empower them to exercise the right to speak out and vote,before we can say whats really the right thing,the best way to do. Go out and meet those peddlers who are chased away everyday by the municipal administration in the name of order and public security.Go out and meet those nail household who stand desperately in the debris of their houses for the sake of thegovernments construction program.What does justice mean to them?Justice can never be viewed only in a general and collective perspective.It has to be practical to every individual,especially the minority group.And if China is to be a great nation,if a harmonious society is to be built up,this must become true,that the minority be guaranteed full respect for their right and interest. This is our hope.This should be the faith our university studen
