Research Proposal班级 11级英语9班 学号1105020272 姓名 王小进 Title of my thesisThe Influence of English Idioms on Chinese and Their Misuses英语习语对中文的影响和习语的误用Literature reviewEnglish is full of idioms, an idiom is “a phrase, construction, or expression that is recognized as a unit in the usage of a given language and either differs from usual syntactic patterns or has a meaning that differs from the literal meaning of its parts taken together” (Websters New World College Dictionary, 1991: 7-9). Idioms have many features such as the “single unit”, then the “institutionalization”, at last the “irreplaceability” Idioms are widely chosen in English daily conversations because of their liveliness, their concision and their wit. Native speakers usually use idioms in their language to show wisdom, a good humor and command of their languages. Researchers have been paying abundant attention on the exploration of English idioms, they published such great number of books about the idioms researches, the idioms dictionaries, the idioms origins, the structure of idioms, the figures of speech in idioms and so on.Nowadays studies on idioms have been conducted for decades. As many as 3347 books have been published with idioms as part of their titles from the year 1999 to 2014 (from CNKI, 2014). In the past decades we all have talked about how to translate the English idioms into Chinese. Some researched the principals and theories in English idioms translation. Some explored the background and originals of the idioms and analyzed their own native cultures to the effects on English idioms. Some studied the English idioms structures, features, characteristics, even the differences between English idioms and Chinese “Cheng Yu” and “Yan Yu”（it is conventional phrases or sentences, and are widely acknowledged and accepted by Chinese. So much exploration has been conducted, Most of them can be divided into 3 categories:1).At the very beginning of idioms study, most of them focus on idiom dictionary, tracing the historical origins of idioms, such as bible, legendaries, Shakespeares works, features of idioms, different styles of idioms, like colloquies, slangs, taboosMeanings of idioms, classifications of idioms, translation of idioms or trying to find equivalents of certain idioms between two different languages, for example, “Smooth tongue 油嘴滑舌To turn a deaf ear to充耳不闻Be a piece of cake 小菜一碟etc” (by Kuala, 2005). 2). With the help of dictionary, people began to promote interests and enthusiasm about teaching and learning methods. During this period idioms went from theory study to practice and use in the real world. Researchers took the method of combining the traditional and modern researches, whats more, it improved the level of idioms teaching, helped to gained the ability of English teachers. Many researchers have been conducted in this area and great achievements have been made. And this pushed the idioms explorations to a brand-new field (Luo Shiping, 2006). 3).Some researchers have paid special attentions to specific areas, such as: metaphors, numbers, religious, clothes, food, etc. Those researchers just focus on a specific field, and go on a deeper exploration. And still others tried to view idioms by means of the latest theories: pragmatics, connectionism, social-semiotics, etc. in recent years, pragmatics study the practical use of the idioms, the functions of idioms in daily communications. And the study of idiom has extended to the culture, function and pragmatics of idiom. From the cultural perspective, people regard idioms as the outcome of specific social culture (from Kuala, 2005).However, as the introduce and popular of idioms are spreading around the world ,people are gradually neglecting Chinese proverbs, ignoring Chinese abundant cultures and languages, idioms do have influence on Chinese more or less, just as discussed above endangered our culture, change peoples values or thinking models, loss of Chinese identity, endangered and challenged our own culture. what this thesis explored is based on the former research, as the result of these exploration it can analysis the reasons why English idioms are getting so popular, and give some constructive suggestions. Idioms are the gist of a language, usually it refers to groups of words and phrases whose meanings are not added up through every literal meaning of each single words. Learners cant work out its meaning only depending on each separated parts. Generally speaking idioms have been used for a long time. Its structures are fixed, and changeless while it can express a complete and coherent meaning. Idioms originate from some certain and specific circumstances which I will talk on later parts. English language is full of idioms. Most English native speakers can affluently and frequently use English idioms in daily lives. There are many kinds of English idioms which can be categorized according to different standards. For instance some researchers divided idioms into nature idioms, animal idioms, sports idioms, religious idioms However some researchers categorize idioms into verb idioms and non-verb idioms such as prep+prep，adj+adj，adv+advOthers organize idioms follows as formal, informal idioms, taboos and slangs and so on(by Yu Fumin, 2009). There are so many categories idioms here, researchers have hold their own values on different idioms. Some idioms dictionaries have been published to give idioms an English explanations which can help us better and clearer understand idioms.Key pointsThe dissertation will unveil and unfold these facts and phenomenon which having been given above. And show more examples, instances, misuses, more researches about this field and respect. Through this dissertation, it will reveal the indifference and ignorance of Chinese culture so that it can put much emphasis on and think highly of Chinese culture. At the same time ,illustrating the misuses of English idioms in detail.The first part is general knowledge about English idioms. The thesis will use the method of general research or sample survey to get reference about idioms, according to what having been arranged and explored . It will show the definition, origins and features of the idioms. Then there will be a brief introduction to the functions of idioms. After this thesis will rearrange those researches, study the statistics and figure out the results and get some important conclusions. Then it will go to the next part the influence of idioms on Chinese, and give more specific descriptions on the influences , such as the influence on early children education, Chinese culture, foreign language teaching and so on. After that the thesis will mainly illustrate their misuses in different aspects and give more examples to show their misuses, like failing to use idioms appropriately and paying no attention to their connotative meanings. Those surveys will be close to my title “Influence of English Idioms on Chinese and their Misuses”. And at the end of the dissertation, the research should get relevant conclusions, such as the ways to correct the misuses of English idioms and suggestions to pay more attention to protect our Chinese culture and so on.
