range and discovered more than flames 28 snakes, six of them lethalThe man didnt have a permit for the six lifethreatening snakes five rattlers (响尾蛇) and a gaboon viper and he may face charges for keeping them without a permit. The viper, native to Africa,is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. The snakes were inside cages in a separate room and were removed as firefighters quickly put out the flame on Friday in Clearfield, about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City. The poisonous snakes were taken away by the Utah Division of Wildlife, where Capt.Tony Wood was trying to determine their fate and whether to cite (传讯) the owner. “Im just trying to wrap my head around the situation,” he said on Monday.Fire and smoke damage left the mans house unable to live in,but all the snakes survived. The owner took his 22 other legal snakes for safekeeping to his fathers house,Davis County Animal Control Director Clint Thacker said. The seized rattlers will probably be released into the wild, and the viper could be sent to someone authorized to have it,said Jim Dix of Reptile Rescue of Tooele County. The owner has been described variously by officials as a snake professional or breeder.Dix said the snakes were well fed,in good condition and that there was no threat to anyone in the neighborhood.“We are seeing a big increase in illegal animals in Utah,” he said.“It just goes on and on.” Earlier this year,Cottonwood Heights police cited a young man for failure to have an exotic pet permit and ordered him to get rid of all but one of his 29 boa constrictors (王蛇) he kept in his basement. The Cottonwood Heights City Council later gave him a reprieve (暂缓),allowing Thomas Cobb to keep his snakes while officials revisit the city code.Cobb still has the snakes that are worth Eventually, however,I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations,I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone.Several months later,I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty.I would be going to a small village near Abuja,Nigeria.Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out. After completing my training,I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accom modation.Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family.I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so,I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.Sometime during that period,I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and returned to the United States a different man.The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.11What do we know about the author?AHis university education focused on the theoretical knowledge.BHis dream at university was to become a volunteer.CHe took pride in having contributed to the world.DHe felt honored to study English literature.解析:事实细节题。从第一段的“My degree, with honors,in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical.”可知选A。答案:A12According to the Project Lighthouse,it is likely that the author_Adiscussed his decision with his family.Basked previous volunteers about voluntary workCattended special training to perform difficult tasks Dfelt sad about having to leave his family and friends解析:推理判断题。从第二段的“In short,I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse project lightly.Neither did my family.”和第三段的“Eventually, however,I won the support of my family”可知虽然作者和家人并非轻松地作出决定,但作者还是赢得了家人的支持,所以可以推断作者和家人讨论过这个问题。答案:A13In his application for the volunteer job,the author_Aparticipated in many discussionsBwent through challenging survival testsCwrote quite a few paper on voluntary workDfaced strong competition from other candidates解析:事实细节题。从第三段的“After countless interviews and presentations,I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone.”可知作者在众多的应聘者中脱颖而出。答案:D14On arrival at the village, the author was_Aasked to lead a farming teamBsent to teach in schoolhouseCreceived warmly by local villagersDarranged to live in a separate house解析:事实细节题。从倒数第二段“Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family.”可知选C。答案:C15What can we infer from the authors experiences in Nigeria?AHe found some difficulty adapting to the local culture.BHe had learned to communicate in the local language.CHe had overcome all his weakness before he left for home.DHe was chosen as the most respectable teacher by his students.解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段“Sometime during that period,I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did”可知选A。答案:ADAll of us should keep a kitchen diary, showing how much food are left uneaten as garbage. We all waste food, you and me,millions of tons of it.In China, enough food is wasted in restaurants every year to feed 200 million people. In the United States,40 percent of food is wasted from farm to fork. Each year, the amount of food thrown away in rich countries is almost the same as that produced in subSaharan Africa. This raises some important questions. In developing countries, food is lost because farmers do not have appropriate cooling, storage or market access for their crops.Their grains, fruits and vegetables dry up and rot away.In developed countries, the picture is different, and food is wasted in supermarkets, restaurants and at homes.China faces both problems, significant losses in farms,as well as at the sale and consumption stages. And the amount of food wasted by Chinese consumers is rapidly increasing.Consumer culture has filled China and urban residents can get quality food from anywhere in the country and from across the planet.Chinese consumers are as particular about their food as those in other countries. In supermarkets, they refuse to buy vegetables that dont look fresh or have an irregular shape,or milk and other products close to their expiry date.Besides,Chinese consumers tend to be generous. In restaurants or at homes, often too much food is ordered or cooked and served. So while trooping out of a restaurant, full and happy, with colleagues or friends, they never look back at whats left untouched on the table.Should Chinese consumers take more responsibility for the waste they create?Everyone deserves to have enough food to eat.Despite Chinas impressive success in reducing hunger over the past three decades, the
