And language reflects every aspect of culture as is typically shown in the cultural connotations of words. In both English and Chinese there are great sums of plant words that are pregnant with cultural information. In this thesis the author conducts a comparative study on cultural connotations of plant words in English and Chinese from three perspectives i.e. semantic overlapping, semantic difference, and semantic vacancy, and points out that the main causes of disparities in cultural connotations are the differences in aesthetic psychology, national cultural tradition, living environment and social folk norms, and phonology and semantic systems.
