One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this. Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win. When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack (叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didnt go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered. Paragraph 1: Finally, it was Brians turn. _Paragraph 2: Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. Jeremy couldnt believe his luck. The morning of his 6th grade field trip to the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the Museum of Natural History, he fell ill. “This cant be,” he thought. “Science is my favorite subject, and Im not going to be able to visit the museum?” He pleaded (恳求) with his parents to let him go to school anyway, but they were firm in their refusal. “The sooner you rest at home, the sooner youll get better,” his mother said. “Dont be so hard on yourself. Now take this medicine and go lie back down.”Jeremy closed his eyes as he swallowed the white tablet. Even though it was sunny outside, he felt a black cloud hovering (盘旋) over his head, threatening stormy weather inside his brain and making him angry. But soon after he lay in bed, the medicine his mother had given him began working, and he fell asleep almost right away. When Jeremy awoke, his room was bathed in darkness. When he looked out of his window, he saw stars shinning in the dark sky. Then Jeremys dad walked into his room with a smile on his face. “Youre awake, Jeremy,” he said. “What time is it? Did I miss everything?” Jeremy asked. His father put a hand on his forehead and checked for a temperature. Nothing. “Not at all, in fact, youre just in time for your field trip. If youre feeling better, that is.” Jeremy jumped out of bed and did a little dance. His energy was back. “Im feeling fine,” he said. “Great. Now put on a sweater and follow me,” said Jeremys dad.Jeremy checked the time as he was getting dressed. 8:05 pm. It didnt make any sense. Where could he possibly be going with his father so late in the day? Surely the museum was closed. But Jeremy didnt slow down. He dressed and met his father in the living room, where he was sitting with a man he had never met before. Paragraph 1: “Jeremy, meet Professor Helfand. He is a professor of astronomy at Columbia University, where they have an observatory (天文台),” his father said. _Paragraph 2: When they arrived at the observatory, Jeremys father called Jeremy over to the front of a huge telescope. Summer vacation had just begun, and Alex and Maria were ready to spend all day outside. They decided to walk to the neighborhood park, where there was a river that they liked to swim in when it was particularly hot. When they got to the river, they saw that it was too deep to swim in. Alex and Maria were disappointed. On the other side of the river, about fifty yards away, there was a fountain from which the water is flowing out.“We should go play in the fountain,” Maria said.“How will we get there?” asked Alex.Maria looked around the grassy riverbank and noticed a few logs and branches lying close to the water. “We could build a bridge!” she said. She ran over to a thick log that looked long enough to be placed across the river. Together, she and Alex lifted the log onto their shoulders and walked it to the water. Here, they stopped. How would they get the branch across?Maria suggested throwing it down into the water and seeing if it reached the other side. That seemed improper to Alex what if the branch did not reach the other side of the river, and got stuck or swept away by the water? Then they would be unable to walk all the way across the river.Maria wondered if they could measure the distance from the riverbank they stood on to the other shore. They put the log carefully down and decided to test the distance with lighter, thinner branches. They found a few branches and they tied the branches together using their hair bands. At their first attempt, they tied two branches together and went back to the river to test the length. The branches only reached the center of the water. After tying two more branches together to the initial branches, Alex and Maria were able to get the thin model bridge to touch the far bank. “Hooray!” Maria said. “Now we know how long the log needs to be.”Paragraph 1: They set the tied branches on the ground next to the log. _Paragraph 2: Alex and Maria managed to get to the other side of the river. One possible version:Finally, it was Brians turn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed 10 feet past Pauls plane! The whole school cheered. Brian won the contest. Mr Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane.Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best the paper airplane that flew the farthest he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul.二One possible version:“Jeremy, meet Professor Helfand. He is a professor of astronomy at Columbia University, where they have an observatory (天文台),” his father said. “Because you missed your field trip this morning, were going to pay a little visit to the observatory tonight so that you can have a field trip of your own.” Jeremy couldnt believe his ears. “Im ready!” he shouted at his dad. When they arrived at the observatory, Jeremys father called Jeremy over to the front of a huge telescope. Jeremy looked carefully into the telescope and he saw many big bright stars. “Thats amazing,” Jeremy said with great excitement. “You know, Jeremy, maybe when youre older, you can join our team and help us look for more stars in the sky.
