One day, a man shouted, “I dont want a newspaper!” and slammed the door. Travis went back to visit the man and tried again. Finally, the man agreed to start buying the newspaper. Travis soon became the top salesman. But when he was 18, he decided to become a singer. Travis says his selling experience was very useful for his new career. When I was 14, I was so nervous that it was hard for me to talk to anyone. My classmates often laughed at me. I was really sad but could do nothing. Later, something happened. It changed my life. It was an English speech contest. My mother asked me to take part in it. What a terrible idea! It meant I had to speak in front of all the teachers and students of my school! “Come on, boy. Believe in yourself. You are sure to win.” Then, mother and I talked about many different topics. At last I chose the topic “Believe in yourself.” I tried my best to remember all the speech and practiced it over 100 times. With my mothers great love, I did well in the contest. I could hardly believe my ears when the news came that I had won the first prize. I heard the cheers from the teachers and students. Those classmates who were not nice to me, now all said “Congratulations!” to me. My mother hugged me and cried quietly. Since then, things have changed for me. No matter what I do, I try to tell myself to be confident (自信的) and I will find myself. This is true not only for me but also for everybody. ( ) 3The best title for the passage should be “_”. AMothers Great Love BEnglish Speech Contest CBelieve In Yourself DChange Your LifeENow satellites are helping to forecast (预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大气), because this is where the weather forms (形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change. Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare (比较) them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this. So the weather satellites are a great help of the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead. ( )1The main idea of this passage is that satellites are now used in _. Ataking pictures of the atmosphere Breceiving pictures of the atmosphere Cdoing other work in many ways Dweather forecastingFScience has changed the way we live and the way we think. New inventions and discoveries have made it possible for us to think about the world in new ways. The means of transportation we use today are good examples. They are based (以为基础) on the idea that transportation means moving something from one place to another. This takes time, of course, and we can only travel as fast as the laws of physics allow. It is not easy to travel much faster than todays airplanes and to travel very far, such as to the stars or to other planets. Now, scientists believe that we might be able to send things from one place to another without moving them through space. This sounds strange, but a new way of transportation may become possible in the future. Teleportation is a combination (组合) of sending information through telephone or the Internet. With normal transportation, for example, by car or plane, a person or thing is moved from point A to point B. With teleportation, a person or thing is taken apart (把拆开) at point A and put together again at point B. It becomes possible, we may be able to travel faster and farther than we could imagine. In the 1990s, scientists discovered that teleportation was possible. Experiments showed that teleportation could be done, but the thing being teleported was broken into pieces on the way. So far scientists have only been able to teleport photosparticle (粒子). What about teleportation of human beings (人)? Teleporting a human being would be very difficult since there are so many parts in a human body. Even the smallest mistake could cause serious problems with the persons mind or body. There is still a long way from being able to use teleportation to move human beings, but what we used to think impossible does now seem possible. What we know and what we imagine often work together; the more we know, the more we can imagine and the more we imagine, the more work together; the more we know, the more we use to make our dreams come true and to build a new world with our ideas. Your first step will be to find a right piece of land. Your choice (选择) will depend on many different things. You will probably try to find a sunny place, with pleasant surroundings (环境) near shops and bus stops, not too far from your friends and the place where you work.Next you will find a good builder, and together with the builder you will work out a plan. The builder will draw the plan. It will show the number of rooms, their position and size, and other parts, which must be noticed, such as windows, doors, and electric outlets. The builder will work out how much money is needed to build your house. He will work out the cost of the wood, bricks, the glass, and everything else that must be used in building the house. Later on, when he starts to build, this estimate (预算) must be corrected and revised (修订). His estimate is based on existing prices, but prices of such things may change, and many other things may happen between the time when he makes the estimate and the time when he builds the house. When the builder gives his estimate, you may wish to change your plan. (You may also wish to change your builder, if his estimate is too high!) You may find that the house you wanted at first costs too much, or that you can spend a little more an
