This theme represents a central concern of the international community for future policy making, urban strategies and sustainable development. World Expositions are galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. Exposition 2010 is attracting governments and people from across the world focusing on the theme and displaying their achievements, success and expectations in the urban civilisation to the full extent through unique cultural pavallions among which some stand there majestically, such as China Pavilion based on the concept of Oriental Crown, Splendid China, Ample Barn, and Rich People, to express the spirit and disposition of Chinese culture; The Saudi Arabia Pavilion features a fine centerpiece: a huge hanging boat shaped like a half moon. The moon boat is loaded with dreams and friendship symbolizing the Arabian wisdom in creating wonderful city life in spite of the severe natural environment without rivers or lakes; UK pavilion is also known as the Seed Cathedral and the area around it is designed like a wrapping paper, making it seem as if the wrappers have fallen open to reveal a sparkling jewel of life. Visitors can relax around the open space or enter the Seed Cathedral to admire the seeds in the spines, marveling how such tiny seeds can produce wonders of nature and life, to name just a few. In the Expo, nations exchange their experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced notions on cities and explore new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. I expect to learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings. In my expectation, I hope Expo 2010 will also create blueprints for future cities and harmonious urban life styles, providing an extraordinary educational and entertaining platform for all nations. The future cities should be blending of diverse cultures, boosting enomic prosperity , valuing inovations of science and technology, remodelling communities better and pursuing the sustainable and harmonious development. Part II Reading comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) 1-5: CCDAD 6-7: AB 8. Spending on ineffective care contributes to rising health costs and insurance premiums. Variations in how health care providers treat the same conditions reflect uncertainty and disagreement about what the standards for clinical practice should be. Patients and insurers cannot always be confident that health professionals are delivering the most effective care. A new report from the Institute of Medicine offers (27) a blueprint for national program to assess the effectiveness of clinical services and to provide credible, unbiased (没有偏见的) information about what really works in health care. The report recommends that Congress direct the US Department of Health and Human Services to establish a program with the authority, expertise, and resources necessary to set priorities for evaluating clinical services and to conduct systematic reviews of the evidence. (28) This program would also be responsible for developing and promoting rigorous standards for clinical practice guidelines, which could help minimize the use of questionable services and target services to the patients most likely to benefit, said the cimmittee that wrote the report. “ We need a way to synthesize data about the effectiveness of health care products and services in a standardized, objective fashion that will be considered reliable and trustworthy by all decision makers,” said committee chair Barbara J. McNeil, Ridley Watts Proffessor and head, department of health care policy, Harvard School of Medicine, and professor of radiology, Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston. “A system coordinated by a single, national entity that can prioritize (把区分优先次序) and coordinate these evaluations (29) would enable us to sort the wheat from the chaff and make sense of it all.”26. What od the solutions to some pressing health problems hinge on?27. Why does the report offer a blueprint?28. What would the program be responsible for?Passage Two Less than a year ago, Sara Anundsen defeated the best of the best in the college tennis world, winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association doubles championship as a senior at the University of North Carolina. Now, entering her first year of life off the court, (30) Anundsen has gained immediate respect as the new assistant coach for the Princeton womens tennis team. From her experience playing for a top 10 team throughout her college career, Anundsen knows what it means to win and has the mentality (精神) of an NCAA champion. (31) Anundsen coaches both doubles and singles for the Tigers but feels more knowledgeable about doubles because of her success as a player. In August, Anundsen and former TarHeel partner Jenna Long received a wildcard entry into the doubles draw of the 2007 US Open, falling in the first round. Doubles appeal to Anundsen because of the strategy involved, and she has a personal passion for the poaching and movement involved in out thinking the other team. In the past, doubles have been a struggle for Princeton. Anundsens experience should lead to continued improvement in the players doubles skills, however, as the same key points that guided her to NCAA championship will surely factor into her coaching repertoire. (32) The Tigers have been close to the top in recent NCAA competitions, but none of the current players have experience winning at the championship leve. Anundsen, though, has fervor for victory running through her and knows what it takes to place first. Anundsens high standards for the teams are in line with those held by head coach Kathy Sell.30. Where does Sara Anundsen work now?31. How about Anundsen as a coach?32. In recent NCAA competitions, what achievement have the Tigers gained?Passage Three (33) The earliest anatomically (解剖学的) modern humans are thought to have arrived around 200,000 years ago. These fossils show a rounded braincase and flatter face. Their brains had also reached modern proportions. Modern humans had made it to Asia by 90,000 years ago, Australia by 60,000 years ago, Europe and the Arctic by 40,000 years ago, and the Americas by 12, 000 years ago. Throughout history, tool use appears to have progressed slowlyonce innovations were made, they lasted millions of years barely altering. Bur around 50,000 years ago something changed, and culture started to develop at a much more rapid rate. (34) Modern humans habitually began innovating new tool types, burying their dead, creating jewellery, developing sophisticated (复杂的,高度发展的) hunting techniques such as pitfall traps, using animal skins for clothing, decorating
